Founder’s Day On Friday 26th May, we, as a school celebrated Founder’s Day in honour of Our Patron Saint St John Baptist De La Salle. The five key Lasillian principles of: Faith in the presence of God, Respect for all persons, Quality Education for all, Inclusive community and concern for the poor and social justice were explored in great depth through spiritual experiences, dance, drama and music. A message of respect, community and inclusivity on Founder’s Day Many students were involved in peforming a drama production expressing the principles in a variety of ways using music to enhance their performance. This was an excellent showcase of the gifts and talents that our students and staff have and was thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended. Many thanks to the

Liturgical Service of Spirituality and Reflection Our school Chaplain, Miss Warren led a beautiful reflective liturgy based on how we could live out the Lasallian principles in our school and wider community. Students were asked to complete a ‘Declaration of Lasillian belief’ where they indicated actions they were going to undertake to fulfil the principles. These are displayed on our Chapel doors to create a school community wall.

At Lunch time, all students and staff received a cake as a celebration of being part of our school community. Lots of students had ‘seconds’.

Founder’s Day Mass Period 5 was our Celebration Mass for Year 10. Many of our assembly ambassadors and chaplaincy reps led elements of the Mass as well as preparing prayer chains where the whole year group contributed. It was a beautiful spiritual experience where we, as a community were reminded of our faith and our duties to live by the principles indicated by Our Founder; St John Baptist De La Salle. World Music Day On Tuesday, 20th June, the school was visited by two professional musicians from Essex Music Hub. The visitors led an exciting and engaging workshop where they helped all of Year 7 to create their very own piece of music. This involved clapping, stamping, rapping, beat boxing, whistling and much more! We would like to thank Martin and Andy for providing such a high quality workshop for our students who all seemed to enjoy it. Mr Mouchel—Teacher of Music

Leaver’s Mass The Leavers’ Mass is a moment where Year 11 students can put to one side their anxieties about the exam period and enjoy a moment of reflection and celebration of their time at De La Salle. It was with this consideration that Father Dominic delivered a Mass which got our leavers to come together and pause for a moment, to think about their spiritual and emotional selves that have developed over time, as well as their academic attributes in De La Salle. The students were encouraged to join together for a moment of peace that may be one of the last times they share a room together as a whole. After a deeply thoughtful sermon, the students received gifts of a Medal of the Immaculate Conception and a leaflet which included every Year 11 student’s name. The students concluded the afternoon enjoying a slice of cake before setting off for a relaxing half term which I am sure was filled with lots of purposeful revision too. My thanks go to Father Dominic for delivering a deep and meaningful Mass that will long live in the memory of our students. A message to Year 11 Students arrive in secondary school, often even before the teenage years begin, and leave as young adults. The five years in between has been a time of great change in your lives – you have, hopefully, learned the skills needed to tackle the next phase of your young lives. Be assured that running through all the interactions, which you have with us, was an awareness of the need to enhance you in some way – whether it be in your learning, your esteem or your awareness. We won’t ask you to remember your school because you can’t forget your school days. We wish you the best of luck in the future. Don’t try to be too strong; as a human being you will feel very vulnerable and humble at times and that humility may be your real strength. Be assertive, not aggressive; be flexible, accommodating and open to learning. Keep in touch with your spiritual side and keep God in your life. Mr Jacobson - Year 11 Progress Leader

Sunday 8th May some members of De La Salle’s basketball team went to the the O2 Arena to watch the women's and men's BBL play off finals. Four teams battled it out in the BBL/WBBL Play Off Finals at a packed 02 Arena. The WBBL final was a closely contested match, with a dominant fourth quarter from the Sevenoaks Suns who took the victory. The Nottingham Wildcats had the stronger start of the two sides, but the Suns produced a fantastic finish to take the game 70-61. Catherine Carr secured the Molten MVP Award, with an impressive 20 points and 14 rebounds, playing a huge role in the Suns’ success. The BBL final proved to be more of a one sided affair with the Leicester Riders finishing a strong season in style, winning 84-63 over the Newcastle Eagles. The Riders came out of the gates quickly, gaining a lead early on and maintaining it throughout the match. The Molten MVP award went to Pierre Hampton, pictured below with Molten UK Marketing Manager Alex James. Hampton scored 14 points and 14 rebounds to help his team take the title. www.moltensports.co.uk The day was enjoyed by all, the atmosphere was amazing and the basketball on show was brilliant! Prayer

Lord God, At the beginning of this summer season, teach us to be your hands and feet where we are. Teach us to love as you

love us. Teach us to pray for those in need. So that all our actions honour and glorify you.

We especially pray for all those who have been affected by the recent attacks. We pray for peace and hope throughout the world.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

A Basic Twitter Guide - Safe Use and Security

Introduction Twitter is a great Social Networking service that allows you to send chunks of bitesize information in 140 characters or less. Known as a “microblogging” service it was conceived in much the same way as Facebook; to share information with a small group of people. Created by Jack Dorsey he defined the microblogging service as, “a short burst of inconsequential information.” His first tweet sent on March 21st 2006 was, “just setting up my twttr.” Twttr was the original name. Since then Twitter has grown massively. In 2012 the service is close to 150 million users tweeting over 340 million tweets daily and over 1.6 billion search queries. (source: Wikipedia) The ways in which Twitter is being used is immense; for example: As a teaching and learning tool for working together (collaborative). To communicate with your friends and family overseas. To follow your favourite bands, musicians and other celebrities. As an emergency communication system. To make things more engaging, for example TV shows and conferences. News networks and as a sales/marketing tool…. …. and much more, but you get the idea; it is only the imagination which limits it’s use. This brief guide has been written to give a good understanding of the security settings and how to use the service safely.

TWITTER – Security Settings and Safe Use You MUST be 13 years or over to use Twitter Twitter is a great microblogging service. By remembering some simple tips you will remain safe and secure and enjoy the service for a long time. Remember Twitter is a social networking service; all your tweets can be seen or searched by anybody. Protecting your account prevents people from following you automatically. It also stops people you haven’t approved reading or searching your tweets. If you wish to protect your account you can do so in the Settings. Use a strong password to stop your account from being hacked and change it regularly. A Guide to Safe Use for Young People Don’t post any personal information like your age, where you live, mobile phone number. If you have to, use a DM. It is very easy to tweet something in the heat of the moment and regret it later. Never post anything that could upset somebody else. If you find something upsetting don't reply; tell an adult you trust. If it carries on “block” the sender. Remember that not everybody is who they say they are. If somebody asks you to meet them in the real world, tell your parents or an adult.

IF YOU ARE BEING BULLIED OR HARASSED TELL AN ADULT STRAIGHT AWAY

Year 11 Art Exhibition

On 6th June we held an exhibition of Year 11 GCSE artwork celebrated in school. Exhibited was two years of artwork, created by each student, over the duration of the course. On display was a range of materials and processes including, paintings, printmaking, sculpture, dresses, feltings and silk paintings - all reflecting students' responses to different themes.

Miss Huggins—Teacher of Art

The gallery exhibition was a wonderful experience. I was able to see all of the hard work and effort my peers and I had put in over the two years. Ryan MDonald I am very proud of how my art work turned out. I am continuing with Art and Design in college and I feel it has been a great start to my career. Caitland Willis I thought the art exhibition was very well put together, it made me feel proud of my art pieces. I felt that all my hard work had paid off. Megan Adams

Barcelona - A photographers Paradise

Year 10 GCSE Photography students were overwhelmed by the stunning city of Barcelona. Each site that they visited provided then with perfect opportunities to capture the unique architecture of Antoni Gaudi who was the creator of the stunning architecture of Barcelona. Students spent time sketching aspects of the buildings which provided them with valuable primary recourses to add to their coursework. As the students approach their mock exam, they have focused on their Barcelona experience as their inspiration for their exam and are now focused on planning to create a unique and exciting piece of work inspired by their visit. All their photography skills were used to capture the essence of this fantastic city adding a new and valuable aspect to their experience of photography. Mrs Ansary –Teacher of Photography

On the 29th May 2017, over thirty students and I travelled to one of the largest cultural cities in the world, some for food and graphics enrichment my reason was photography and it was worth it.

Whilst on our trip we explored a lot of fun and fantastic places that we were very lucky to experience, I knew that our teachers would have chosen some exciting places to let our photographic minds run loose.

The first place we went to was the La Sagrada Familia (which was a cathedral constructed by Antoni Gaudi). The cathedral is still under construction but it is exactly like what Gaudi designed it like (baroque), what I mean by that, is the cathedral had a flow of colour throughout the cathedral. As soon as I walked through an explosion of colour grabbed my attention! The windows were full of bright colours and patterns, colour is a really important factor when it comes to photography. In an architectural way, the pillars stood out because they were such a great size we could take pictures from all types of angles from our

perspectives. The next day we went to the aquarium where there was such a variety of animals to photograph, but we could not use flash photography as the light could reflect onto the surface and disturb the animals. I wanted to take photos that would relate to my mock exam (colour) and the locations that were chosen were such good examples.

15

We also went to the market to see what fresh food they had in stock, wherever I turned there was bold, beautiful, bright colours and it was like I was in a whole new world. It made me feel happy. We also looked around the gothic quarter where there were many tall, dark, mighty buildings to represent how gothic it was, it has a piece of history and it is great to capture history.

The next day we visited the house of Antoni Gaudi, who was the architect behind the La Sagrada Familia. There were some of Gaudi’s real possessions like bed, diary, chairs etc. It is great to capture history.

Personally, I think that La Sagrada Familia because it was incredible to have witnessed the making of a cathedral that will be finished in 2026 in honour of Gaudi’s death. It made me feel happy and it sent off a positive vibe. When I was in the building I noticed that because of the size of the pillars, I could experiment with how I take pictures and take it from my own perspective. It gave me the chance to make my photos better and I could somehow develop my own pictures if I carry on doing what I did in Barcelona, it was such a great chance to take and I was very happy to travel to such wonderful location for my photography. Lydia Steele—Year 10

In Barcelona, we visited various attractions. There was the Sagrada Familia: a work-in-progress basilica that was started over 100 years ago and is still being built to this day. We also visited the house of the architect Gaudí, he designed most of the buildings in Barcelona including the Sagrada Familia. We also went to the theme park Port Adventura, and went on the rides all day. Overall, Barcelona was a fun trip for everybody to support our studies. Caitlin Warren - Year 10

We walked to the Sagrada Familia where we enjoyed an audio tour of this famous building. Later that evening we attended Lactuca Buffet where students tucked into some traditional Spanish foods.

Day 2: We got the Metro at 9:30am to L’Aquarium Barcelona. A series of 35 tanks, 11,000 animals- 450 different species, an underwater tunnel 80 metres long and six million litres

of water and an immense Oceanarium (the only one in Europe) made up the attraction. Unfortunately due to poor weather we decided to have lunch at the Maremagnum instead of the beach. When the rained stopped we walked up Las Ramblas one of Barcelona’s most famous tourist attractions. Here students enjoyed looking at the human statues and their trickeries. Students stopped off to have their caricature completed and visit the tourist shops. At the top of Las Ramblas we broke off into groups to experience Mercat De La Bouqueria, one of Barcelona’s famous food markets. Here we experienced some traditional flavours and ingredients.

After a busy few hours students were happy to rest in the Hard Rock Café for their evening meal. Back on Las Ramblas again we enjoyed a walking tour of the Gothic quarter which led us back to the hostel. That evening students took part in karaoke, with the shining star being Darwin Fletcher signing a perfect rendition of ‘The Fresh

prince of Belair’. Day 3: At 9:00am students were on the coach to Port Aventura theme park in Salou. Here we spent the day on rollercoasters, water rides and trains around Spain’s largest theme park. Students thoroughly enjoyed the day and would have loved to stay a few hours longer. On our return to Barcelona we went to a traditional Spanish Tapas evening where students experienced traditional Flamenco Dance and a wide selection of Tapas. We all enjoyed Paella, Patatas Bravas, Cured Meats, Cheeses, Chicken Croquettes, Salad, Calamari and Ice Cream. Day 4: Students were up early to walk to Casa Museu Gaudi at the top of

Parc Guell. After a steep trek in the Barcelona sun, students relished the chance to see where Gaudi spent most of his time. Here students spent some time taking images of this famous house. After a

walk around Parc Guell we got the metro and bus to the beach where students relaxed for an hour. On arrival at the hostel we collected our bags and boarded the coach for the airport. We arrived back at DLS just after midnight. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students for their outstanding behaviour and the staff Mrs Ansary, Miss Rickenberg, Mr Wade and Mr Boylan for their support on the trip. General Election 2017

Students take part in Citizenship / PSHE education every Wednesday morning. As part of their Citizenship education programme it is vitally important that the students understand a key British Value, and that is democracy. During the last week of the spring term students had an assembly introducing the concept and purpose of a democratically held election. Students were then informed they would have the opportunity to vote in a mock general election on the 8 th June 2017. Prior to the election, students supported by form tutors and through displays around the school prepared for the elec-tion getting to terms with party manifesto pledges and how to complete a ballot paper. These manifesto pledges were discussed during form registration time. On the 8th June itself the school library became the official Polling Station. Each student was invited to mark a cross next to the political party they wanted to win the general election. The final school result is shown below. Total votes counted = 540 Spoilt ballots = 3 (not counted)

1st = Labour Party with 322 votes. 60% of the votes.

2nd = Conservative Party with 181 votes. 34% of the votes.

3rd = Liberal Democrats with 34 votes. 6% of the votes.

Success for De la Salle at languages Competition

On Wednesday May 17th a record number of De la Salle students (20) competed in the Regional Final of the ‘Have Your Say’ Competition at Thomas Lord Audley School in Colchester. The students were a credit to the school executing their dialogues with great skill and determination. Every student performed to the best of their ability having spent many hours practising their performance not only for the final but also for the preliminary round. This year we had two pairs who were placed in the top three pairs, no mean feat as there were over fifty pairs entering the competition in every age group. I would like to congratulate and thank all students who represented the school and a special mention to Amelia Cenamor and Angelina Strutton in Year 7 Spanish ( 2nd place) and Bruna Cordosa and Roberto D’Aguiar in Year 10 Spanish (3rd place). This was Bruna’s and Roberto’s third consecutive top three finish, having won the competition in Year 8. Let’s hope that next year we can do even better.
