An Intermediate-low Reader for Advanced Beginning Spanish Students
Haley and Jason think they have rid themselves of
the cursed shrunken head, now that they are back
home from their family trip to Peru. Their relief
quickly gives way to shock, as they realize that
their ordeal has only just begun. Returning the
head and appeasing the Jívaro tribe become a
matter of life and death! Will Haley and Jason
beat the odds?

Capítulo 1La maldición
Eran las doce del mediodía cuando Haley sedespertó. Ella todavía estaba cansada porque lanoche anterior habían llegado1 de las vacacionesen Perú. Ella quería ponerse su camiseta favoritade AC/DC y se acordó que la camiseta todavíaestaba empacada en la maleta.

Haley y su familia ganaron un viaje a Perúcuando su padre estuvo en el programa ‘El Precioes Correcto.’ Fue toda una aventura, pero ahoraHaley estaba contenta de estar en casa otra vez.
Haley abrió la maleta y buscó la camisa.Después de buscar por unos minutos en la maleta,Haley gritó con horror. Vio la cabeza reducidaque dejaron en el altar de la torre en MachuPicchu. Era la misma cabeza que Haley habíarobado de un museo en Perú. Era la misma cabe-za que tenía una maldición que los afectó a ella ya su hermano en Perú. También vio una carta enla maleta. Abrió la carta y leyó:
Tú has ofendido a los dioses de la nación
Jívaro. Has robado la cabeza más importante de
todas. Tú tienes diez días a partir de hoy para
devolvernos la cabeza a nosotros. Si no lo haces,
nosotros vamos a encontrarte, matarte y reducir
tu cabeza.
Tú tienes que devolver la cabeza inmediatamen-
te. Devuelve la cabeza al Jefe de la nación Jívaro.
Se llama Jefe Pavo Grande. Es un hombre bajo y
gordito. Siempre lleva una falda de color marrón

y una corona hecha de plumas rojas. Vive en la
selva al sur del Ecuador. Tienes que navegar el
Río Napo. No debes venir con nadie más que con
tu hermano Jason. No debes venir con tus
padres. No debes venir con la policía. Si tú vie-
nes con otras personas, vamos a matarlos a
todos. Recuerda, solamente tienes diez días.
–Los Jívaro
Haley tenía mucho miedo. Corrió al dormito-rio de Jason. Jason estaba levantando pesas yescuchando música. Jason no oyó cuando Haleyentró. Haley tenía la cabeza reducida en la mano.Le mostró a Jason la cabeza reducida y le gritó:
– ¡Mira esto!Jason se asustó y se le cayeron las pesas. Se le
cayeron en el dedo gordo de su pie derecho.Jason gritó. Gritó porque le dolía el dedo y gritóporque tenía mucho miedo de la cabeza reducida.
Haley le mostró a Jason la carta de los Jívaro.Le explicó que tenían que ir al Ecuador inmedia-tamente.
Jason miró a Haley, y miró la carta. Leyó lacarta en silencio. Pensó por unos minutos. Haley

empezó a llorar. Jason la miró y vio el miedo ensus ojos. Él no sabía qué hacer, pero no quería vera su hermana llorando. Tampoco quería que ellase muriera2.
Haley preguntó a Jason llorando: – ¿Cómo vamos a ir al Ecuador? No pode-
mos decirle nada a Mamá ni a Papá.Ellos no saben que robamos la cabezadel museo en Perú. Van a estar muyenojados con nosotros.
– Tengo una idea. ¿Por qué no enviamosla cabeza al museo por FedEx?
– No, tenemos que devolver la cabeza enpersona. Tenemos que encontrar al jefede la nación Jívaro y darle a él la cabe-za. Es la cabeza más importante de lanación. ¿Qué hacemos Jason? Estoypreocupada. No quiero morir.
Jason miró a su hermana. Sabía que necesita-ban un plan.

Capítulo 2Consecuencias secretas
Al día siguiente, a las seis de la mañana,Martha tocó a la puerta del cuarto de Jason. Ellano oyó nada. Cuando Jason no respondió, Marthaentró. Ella despertó a Jason. Jason le gritó a sumadre:
– ¿Cuál es tu problema? ¿Qué hora es?¿Por qué me despiertas tan temprano?
– Son las seis y es hora de trabajar Jason.Y, no me hables así por favor.
– Yo no quiero ir. Me duele el dedo gordodel pie. Ayer levantaba pesas y me asus-

té. Las pesas se me cayeron en el dedogordo del pie derecho.
– ¡No me importa Jason! Tú vas a trabajarhoy. Tienes muchos días de estar devacaciones.
Jason se levantó y se puso su uniforme. No legustaba el uniforme, se sentía tonto al llevarlo.Fue a McDonald’s® y cuando llegó, vio que su jefeestaba de mal humor. Le dijo a Jason:
– Buenos días Jason. ¿Cómo pasaron lasvacaciones, ¿bien?
– Sí, señor. Tuvimos una aventura enPerú. Definitivamente... una aventura.
– Tu horario dice que ibas a trabajar ayer.– ¿Qué?– Tu horario. Pasaste una semana de
vacaciones y ayer ibas a trabajar. ¿Nomiraste el horario? Tuve que prepararlos Egg McMuffins solo, sin tu ayuda ytuve que venderlos solo también. Ahoraestoy agotado1 y tú estás despedido2.

– ¿Despedido? Nada más por un error delhorario?
– No solamente cometiste un error delhorario. Te vi en la cámara de seguridaduna noche llevándote un Big Mac® sinpagar. Entonces miré los videos devarios días y te vi robando un Big Mactodos los días! ¿Tienes la más mínimaidea de cuántos dólares me robaste conlos Big Macs? ¡Yo debo llamar a la poli-cía!
El jefe miró a Jason con una mirada de disgus-to.
– Sí, Jason, ¡estás despedido! Ya no traba-jas más en McDonald’s. Lo tenemostodo en la cámara de seguridad.
Jason salió del McDonald’s. No quería ir a lacasa porque no quería decirles a sus padres quehabía perdido3 el trabajo.
Fue al gimnasio y levantó pesas. Pasó todo eldía en el gimnasio. Le dolían todos los músculos.

A las cuatro de la tarde, cuando normalmente ter-minaba el trabajo, Jason salió del gimnasio y sefue para la casa. Como no quería llegar a la casasin un Big Mac para Nathaniel, Jason fue primeroa otro McDonald’s para comprar uno. Así, su papáno sabría4 que su jefe lo había despedido5 hoy.Jason pensó: "Yo sé que debo contarles a mispadres que mi jefe me despidió, pero no quiero.Mamá va a enojarse y Papá va a estar triste porqueno voy a poder llevarle más Big Macs".
Jason entró en la casa y encontró a su padresentado en el sofá. Estaba viendo el programa deOprah. Lloraba porque Oprah hablaba con BobBarker sobre su salud y el episodio con las donasde jalea6. Nathaniel todavía se sentía responsable.Él le dio a Bob Barker las donas que le causaron elataque cardíaco.
Jason le dio el Big Mac a su padre y le dijo:– ¿Estás llorando, Papá? ¿Qué te pasa?

Jason siguió hablando, pero realmenteNathaniel no le prestaba mucha atención.Solamente prestaba atención al Big Mac porquetenía mucha hambre. Lo comía y estaba muy con-tento. En un minuto se comió todo el Big Mac.Después, su padre observó que la caja tenía dospegatinas7 para el juego de Monopoly® y se pusoaún más contento.
