NABEC Young Engineer of the Year Each year NABEC offers an award for Young Engineer of the Year. This award honors NABEC m
embers
for outstanding contributions to the advancement of the Agricultural/Biological Engineering Profession.
Awards are made on the basis of nom
inations submitted by colleagues. The award consists of an
engraved plaque.
The 2013 NABEC Young Engineer of the Year Award recognizes Dr. Mark Lefsrud, Assistant Professor at
McGill University and registered Professional Engineer.
After completing his undergraduate degree in Agricultural and Bioresource Engineering at the University
of Saskatchewan in 1997, Mark pursued a m
aster’s degree at Rutgers University. His thesis project focused on designing and evaluating nutrient delivery system
s and plant managem
ent for the salad machine. Following com
pletion of his master’s degree, M
ark worked towards his doctoral degree in Plant Biology, at the University of New Ham
pshire and finishing at the University of Tennessee. His thesis was on the environm
ental manipulation to increase the nutritional content in leafy vegetables
In the January of 2007, Mark joined the Bioresource Engineering Departm
ent at McGill University as a
Lecturer, becoming an Assistant Professor in June of 2007. He continues to work towards developing a
research program in biom
ass production and biofuels. At McGill University, he has received 16 grants as
primary investigator, 4 grants in collaboration, and published 21 peer reviewed publications. He has
supervised over 75 undergraduate students on projects in his laboratory. He teaches 3 classes in the Bioresource Engineering program
at McGill. He developed the class on Food, Fibre, and Fuel Elem
ents as a senior undergraduate and graduate class. M
ark was also involved in the development of the
Barbados Interdisciplinary Tropical Studies (BITS) program taught at Bellairs Cam
pus, Barbados. He was one of three professors involved in the developm
ent of the class on Tropical Energy and Food.
Mark is also very active on com
mittees at M
cGill, nationally, and internationally. He serves on the SEAC advisory com
mittee for the Canadian Space Agency, International Com
mittee of Controlled
Environmental Guidelines through NCR‐101, and has served as a past chair of ASABE ‘s SE‐303
subcommittee on Environm
ent of Plant Structures. His is also an active mem
ber in two networks on biofuels and organic agriculture.

Dr. Jitendra Paliw
al is an Associate Professor
with the D
epartment of B
iosystems Engineer-
ing at the University of M
anitoba. Jitendra’s areas of expertise include developm
ent of m
achine-vision, vibrational (infrared and R
aman) spectroscopy, and artificial neural
network techniques for the agri-food sector.
Jitendra has established a spectroscopy labo-ratory in the C
anadian Wheat B
oard Centre
for Stored-Grain R
esearch for quality determ
ination of cereal grains, processed food, feed, m
eats and water. O
ver the last nine years, he has accom
plished himself as a
world-renow
ned researcher in developing spectroscopic techniques for food quality determ
ination. His w
ork in developing hardw
are and software solutions is w
idely referred to by the designers of spec-troscopy hardw
are. His current projects include developm
ent of a multi-m
odal R
aman-N
IR spectroscopy system
, use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR
) and R
aman spectroscopy techniques for grain quality assessm
ent, NIR
hyperspec-tral im
aging to assess the quality of cereal grains and fruits, and development
of chemom
etric techniques to analyze multivariate data sets. H
e teaches gradu-ate and undergraduate courses in the area of instrum
entation, digital imaging,
vibrational spectroscopy, and engineering design. Jitendra has so far published his research in 41 scientific papers in international peer-review
ed journals. He has also authored or co-authored 55 conference pa-
pers, one peer-reviewed technical note, and three book chapters. Jitendra is
routinely invited at national and international events to deliver talks on the sci-entific advancem
ents in the agri-food area. Since the start of his tenure at the U
niversity of Manitoba in 2002, Jitendra has supervised (or co-supervised)
three post-doctoral fellows, 10 graduate (PhD
and MSc) students, 14 under-
graduate (thesis, co-op, and summ
er) students and 5 visiting scholars. Jitendra has been serving as the A
ssociate Editor of the journal Canadian B
