DDoS Protection powered by VARITI
Variti protects sites from all types of bot attacks, including sophisticated ones. One of the most
popular attacks is DDoS, this is because it is an easy and cheap way for attackers or competitors
to affect your websites. As a result, your customers and visitors are denied access to your
information and commercial services. Our Active Bot Protection (ABP) technology stops you
losing money or loss of reputation due to bot attacks. ABP protects against both the network and
application layer attacks, filters bots in real time and does not block IP addresses, so well-
meaning users can continue to enjoy the website's functionality and services.
How Variti DDoS Protection works:
All incoming website traffic passes through a distributed network of VARITI filtering
nodes.
Traffic is analysed in real time and all requests are classified as either legitimate or
illegitimate.
We classify traffic on real users vs bots even from the same IP address (mobile or
wireless Internet, provider with NAT, public Wi-Fi).
Our Plesk extension is ideal for small organisations that have an online presence and need
protection, such as nonprofit, political movements, manufactures and so on. If your company is
dependent on online traffic for business (online retail, media, banking, hosting, advertising)
Variti's full protection is better suited and provides protection against account takeover, web
scraping, click fraud etc. extending this protection across APIs as well.
By installing Variti’s DDoS Protection Extension you agree to the Terms and Conditions of use. STEP I. Installation 1. Search for ‘Variti’ in Extensions menu
2. Click ‘Get it for free’ button
And wait until extension is installed
3. Once installed you can reach extension from the list to the left or clicking ‘Open’ in ‘My
Extensions’ menu
4. Then you see main menu of extension
And a profile tab
STEP II. Activation and DNS changing You can activate DDoS protection via two scenarios:
1. You have not set DNS
2. Plesk works as DNS server (you have installed BIND DNS on control panel)
1a. The first case is the simplest (you do not possess both DNS and SSL). For service activation,
please, click on ‘Action’ switch opposite needed domain
1b. After DDoS protection is enabled, you will receive approved message. Simultaneously IP
address for domain will be determined
1c. Traffic has to be routed through IP address given by Variti. Please, update DNS record to the
address shown on the right column. If your current IP address does not match the one specified
on Protected IP column, you will see next screen
1d. If addresses are the same and you have successfully changed DNS record, you will then see
this screen
2a. To make your life easier we can change DNS record ourselves, but only if you installed
BIND DNS on Plesk server. Usually BIND DNS is set up by the hosting administrator. If you
have BIND DNS you will see the below message
You have three options:
• Use DNS records (recommended) • Use Plesk address (address of server where Plesk panel is installed). Addresses from
DNS record and Plesk panel can be different but usually they are the same • Use custom address.
If you change address automatically, you will see a different window
2b. After IP address is determined, you will see a message claiming we know about changes and
you do not need to switch address manually. Due to technical issues of protocol, DNS records
are spread across Internet not instantly but after a while (this period is called Time To Live,
TTL). TTL can also be set up on DNS server
2c. After we see you changed IP address to Variti’s, we will issue an SSL certificate. Then you
will see a green shield in SSL column. If you declined automatic DNS changing, you will have
to perform steps ‘manually address’ change - resolve - certificate issue’
STEP III. SSL issue
1. Please, note that our protection works only with SSL, meaning certificate is necessary.
Automatic issue can take time. During this time client’s domain is unavailable. So if you have
enabled SSL or saved certificates we suggest you upload the files to speed up the process
2. After files are downloaded, SSL shield changes to green and service is available right after
you change DNS. You can skip this step to activate DDoS protection via the mentioned above
script (activation - resolve - automatic issue).
STEP IV. Usage
1. New version contains traffic graphics. If you do not have data for a certain period, you will see
this message
2. If data is available, you will see the below graphic
3. You can apply time filters on the right
STEP V. Payment
To continue protection after a 5 days trial you can choose between four plans:
• Starter (1 domain, <1Mbps). €12 (excl. VAT) • Small (10 domains, <1Mbps). €30 (excl. VAT) • Medium (30 domains, <3Mbps). €80 (excl. VAT) • Large (50 domains, <3Mbps). €120 (excl. VAT)
STEP VI. Deactivation
1. To deactivate protection you need to click on a switcher and wait for approved message
2. To deactivate DDoS protection while DNS server is active you have to approve address
change
Address will default back to initial. If saved address is not valid, you can skip this step and
correct DNS later manually. If you installed both DNS and SSL, you will see window that
combines these options.
