Topic: Motion in 1Dimension Study the definitions of distance, displacement, speed , velocity, acceleration,

equations of motion of a body under uniform motion and uniform acceleration and do the following problems.

1. Two cars start off to race with velocities 4m/s and 2m/s and travel in straight line with uniform accelerations 1m/s2 and 2m/s2 respectively. If they reach the final point at the same time, what is the of length of the path? Ans: 24m. 2. What is the average velocity of a particle moving in a straight line with constant acceleration a and initial velocity u in first t seconds. Ans : u + at/2. 3. A bus is moving with a velocity of 10m/s on a straight road .A scooterist wishes to over take the bus in 100s.If the bus is at a distance of 1km from the scooterist, with what velocity should the scooterist chase the bus? Ans:20m/s 4. A balloon is moving upwards with velocity 10m/s. It releases a stone which comes down to the ground in 11s.The height of the balloon from the ground at the moment when the stone was dropped is? g = 10m/s2 Ans:495m 5. A body starts from rest and is uniformly accelerated for 30s.The distance travelled in the first 10s is x1 ,next 10s is x2 and the last 10s is x3.Then x1:x2:x3 is? Ans :1: 3: 5 6. A train starts from rest and moves with a constant acceleration of 2.0 m/s2 for half a minute. The brakes are then applied and the train comes to rest in one minute. Find (a) the total distance moved by the train, (b) the maximum speed attained by the train . 7. Can a body have Constant speed but a varying Velocity? Give one example 8. Draw the position-time graphs for two objects initially occupying different positions but having zero relative velocity.

9. A body moves through distance x from a point A to a point B and returns back to A by same path. What will be the distance and the displacement covered by the body. Ans: 2x, 0

10. A ball hits a wall with a velocity of 30m/s & re-bounces with the same speed. What is the change in its velocity? Ans : -60 m/s

11. A ball is thrown straight up. What is its velocity & acceleration at the top?

12. Two balls of different masses are thrown vertically upwards with same

initial speed. Which one will rise to greater height?

13. Two trains 120m & 80m in length are running in opposite directions with

velocities 42km/h & 30km/h. In what time they will completely cross each

other? Ans 10s

14. A body covers the first half of the distance between two places at a speed of 40km/h and the second half of the journey at 60km/h. What is the average speed of the car? Ans 48km/h

Question no. 1:

Mole concept: In Chemistry, the unit mole is an important tool

when working with quantities. The amount of substance can be

measured in three units, namely, amu, gram and mole depending

upon the size of the substance. In order to make the drug from its

ingredients, someone has to figure out how much of each ingredient

is needed to react together to make the final drug.

Let us say that you went to the supermarket and bought the fruits

by dozen. One dozen is 12. Think that you bought one dozen apple, one

dozen banana and one dozen watermelon. Do you think one dozen of

these fruits weigh the same? No even though, they contain the same

number, their weights are different because they are different fruits.

Now you think this in terms of chemical substances. Well, if you take

6.022 x 1023 H atoms, 6.022 x 1023 Na atoms, 6.022 x 1023 Al atoms, do

you think all these have the same weight? No. Infact they weigh

differently because they are different substances. The weights of these

you can directly read from the modern Periodic table. Now answer the

following:

1. How many atoms and molecules are present in 100 gram S8?

2. Find the number of atoms of each type present in 90 gram of

glucose.

3. Calculate the number of electrons, protons and neutrons present in

3.2 gram of Oxygen gas.

4. Calculate the mass of one molecule of water molecule.

5. Calculate the percentage composition of each element in cane sugar

(C12H22O11).

Question no: 2

1. Write symbols, atomic numbers and atomic masses of 1-20 elements in

the periodic table.

2. Express the following reaction in the form of chemical equation and

then balance these equations.

A) Magnesium ribbon is burnt in a jar containing nitrogen gas when a

white powder of magnesium nitride is obtained.

B) Sodium hydroxide reacts with sulphuric acid to form sodium

sulphate and water.

3. Give an example of a metal which

a) Is a liquid at room temperature.

b) Can be easily cut with a knife

c) Is the best conductor of heat

d) Is the poorest conductor of heat.

4. A copper coin is kept immersed in a solution of silver nitrate for some

time. What will happen to the coin and the colour of the solution? Give

the reaction involved, if any.

5. Draw the structures of the following compounds: Ethanoic acid,

bromopentane, butanone, hexanal.

6. Match the reactions given in column (A) with the names given in

column (B).

Column (A) Column (B)

a) CH3OH + CH3COOH H+ CH3COOH + H2O

b) CH2=CH2 + H2 Ni

CH3-CH3 c) CH4 + Cl2

sunlight CH3Cl + HCl

d) CH3COOH + NaOH CH3COONa + H2O

i) Addition reaction ii) Substitution reaction iii) Neutralisation reaction iv) Esterification reaction

7. A compound X (molecular formula, C2H4O2) reacts with Na-metal to

form a compound Y and evolves a gas which burns with a pop sound.

Compound X on treatment with an alcohol A in presence of an acid

forms a sweet smelling compound Z (molecular formula, C3H6O2). On

addition of NaOH to X, it also gives Y and water. Z on treatment with

NaOH solution gives back Y and A. Identify X,Y,Zand A. write down the

reactions involved.

8. Give one example each of the compounds having the following

functional groups. Also give their names. Aldehyde group, Alcoholic

group, Carboxylic acid, Ester group, Keto group.

9. The number of electrons, protons, and neutrons in the three elements

X,Y and Z are given below:

Element Electrons Protons Neutrons

X 8 8 8

Y 10 10 10

Z 12 12 12

Choose the element which represents an atom of inert gas, which

represents an atom of a non metal, which has 2 electrons in M shell.

10. Four elements A,B,C and D along with their electronic configurations are

given below:

Elements : A B C D
