DDA definition of disability • A person is disabled if they have a mental

or physical impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

e.g. Mobility, Continence, Physical co-ordination, Manual Dexterity, Lifting or carrying, speech, hearing, sight, perception of danger, memory or concentration.

Definition

Some progressive conditions covered from the point where the person knows that they have the condition:

•cancer

•HIV

•multiple sclerosis

Mental impairment:

•‘clinically well-recognised’ criterion is removed

The Social Model of Disability

• The social model believes…Disability is shown as being caused by

barriers or elements of social organisations which take no or little account of people who have impairments. (see distinction between disability and impairments)

The Trafford Disability Equality Scheme follows the social model.

General duty to promote disability equality All public bodies, including schools and local authorities, to have due regard to the need to:

eliminate discrimination;

eliminate harassment related to a disability;

promote equality of opportunity between disabled people and other people;

promote positive attitudes towards disabled people;

encourage participation by disabled people in public life;

take steps to take account of disabled people’s disabilities even where that involves treating disabled people more favourably than other people.

Disability equality scheme
