Durie Design ProfileTRANSCRIPT
D E S I G N P R O F I L E
Principal & Founder, Jamie Durie OAM, was born in Sydney and raised in the outback town of Tom Price in Western Australia. Jamie, like most Australians, loves the outdoors and his deep connection with nature has guided him to create the ultimate outdoor living spaces. His inspiration comes from the vast natural beauty of the Australian landscape, extensive international travel and a passion for Eastern culture and lifestyle through his Sri Lankan heritage. He successfully combines these elements to create his own unique style and approach to design and infuses his design team with the same ideas and philosophies. Through Jamie’s example, the team follows his lead, creating emotional, warm spaces for people inside & out where life long memories are enjoyed.
Largely responsible for completely changing the face of landscape design in Australia, Jamie is the master of the Outdoor Room concept, inspiring a whole new generation to rediscover their
gardens and integrate them as extensions of their living spaces. In his mission to bring us back to the earth and reconnect us with nature, not only has his work blurred the boundaries where architecture meets nature, but through his 15 years of work in landscape design, he has organically bridged the gap with a seamless transition between the design disciplines that govern the interior and exterior spaces by pioneering his ‘transterior’ philosophy. Coupling his love of natural spaces, with the warmth and comfort of interior spaces without compromising one or the other, he and his team have created residential and commercial spaces that share an equal dedication to transterior harmony. This philosophy bridges the inside and outside by means of a single, innovative, design language. This organic, evolution of philosophy has led the team to become a multidisciplinary design firm that covers landscape, interior, transterior, architecture and product design.

The interior design team offers a range of services within the realm of interior design, including textiles, spatial design, interior styling, selection of materials and finishes for floors, ceilings, walls for inside and outside. Inspired by the natural world we encourage the development of an interior that embraces comfort, luxury and warmth.
DURIE DESIGN has an interest in materials and finishes that follow our transterior philosophy, allowing a seamless passage and blurring of boundaries between the interior and exterior. We pride ourselves on delivering unique and innovative design solutions and being able to connect people with nature through the creation of functional and inspiring indoor (and outdoor) spaces.
“Aside from the clothes we wear, the most immediate extension of ourselves is the space we inhabit. Within that space there is a dialogue between form and content – the coming together of the mental and the ornamental. Interior design equals interior life and it should be a meaningful, rich and beautiful experience”
ARCHITECTURE
DURIE DESIGN’s wholistic approach to architecture results in a project designed in it’s entirity—inside, outside, transitionally and structurally. This benefits our clients by creating coherent designs that connect seamlessly as well as maintaining one point of contact for the whole process.
ARCHITECTURAL VISUALISATION
The DURIE DESIGN studio has inhouse architectural
visulaisation capabilities which bring our design concepts to life. We view this as a fundamental element in the design process, communicating our ideas to our clients and similarly our clients to their customers.

“I can design one chair and touch thousands of people with it. A lounge suite will sit in someone’s lounge room for maybe two decades, unlike landscapes which can change dramatically within five years.”

PRODUCT DESIGN
This collection for RIVA 1920 was largely inspired by mid-century modern furniture with a strong natural aesthetic. The
simplicity of these designs is complimented by the attention to detail enhancing the ergonomics and functionality of each
piece. The sofa features an American walnut frame with premium leather cushions and an innovative timber shelf
behind the backrest—providing space to display accessories or place your drink. The Bungalow, Ficus and Rope Stools are
statement pieces on their own while also sitting cohesively within the collection—each piece combining leather, rope and
timber, innovatively and seamlessly. The Tubular Bookshelf is a storage system with infinite configurations. The tubular
lacquered steel or brass frame and machined recesses in each of the solid walnut shelves allow the customer to be the
designer. The Tubular Table has been designed in a similar style with the positioning of the tubular frame base allowing for
plenty of legroom when sitting at each end.

This design was based on an outdoor living room. The client wanted to invert the living spaces of the home to the outdoors,
by creating not just one but several outdoor rooms. The plantings were Mediterranean-inspired, with topiary pines,

The philosophy of this 5 star resort was to create a harmonious balance between the resort and its highly arid surrounding
environment. The plant selection emphasised this with mature cacti, succulents and 600-year-old olive trees from an old
farm in Madrid. Water is an all-pervading presence within this landscape subtly linking the desert with endless views of sea.

DURIE DESIGN was engaged to devise a concept design for the Triptych building in the heart of Melbourne’s Arts Precinct.
Inspired by the architecture and location, by the building’s innovative, stunning landscaped terrace creates sculptured
spaces ideal for relaxation and entertaining. An innovative vertical garden watered by rainwater harvested from the roof not only makes an environmental statement, but also echoes the ‘vertical village’ architectural concept. This has helped to
escalate Triptych to city landmark status. This project won the High Density Development Award at the 2011 UDIA VIC Awards for Excellence, which was submitted by the Stable

The apartments were designed to make use of the balcony as an extension of the interiors to create a seamless indoor-

application and an indoor look and feel so they could be used across most furniture items.
