Alex Colenso and his wife, Gabrielle, and 2 year old son, Nathaniel, live in the Boarding House with the students.

Our educational philosophy places equal emphasis on our students’ intellectual and personal development. The curriculum is designed to help our students develop an appetite for knowledge and learning. But our students are also encouraged to participate in an extensive range of extra-curricular activities particularly in Drama, Sports, Music and Art.

Being on site, our boarders have access to all of our facilities including the aquatics centre, fitness studio, dance studio, theatre, library, sports fields, gym and music rooms. Without the pressures of a daily commute our boarders not only have time for extra guided study they can take full advantage of our wide range of after school and weekend activities.

For most parents, the biggest factor about sending their child to boarding school is that they will miss them. But with modern boarding, it’s easier than ever to keep in touch. Parents, and the Houseparents in charge of boarding houses, are in constant reassuring contact by phone, e-mail, Skype or WeChat and your son or daughter can join you for dinner or even come home during the week. With full boarding, weekly or even flexible boarding it’s what works best for you and your child that’s most important.

There are a myriad of cultural, sporting and social after-school activities for your child to get involved in. From drums to chess and from ballet to badminton.

Alleyn House can accommodate 180 international students from 11 to 18 years of age. The Housemaster and his family live in the House with the students and are further supported by visiting tutors and gap year students. Every evening boarders complete up to 3 hours of supervised study and, unlike their day student counterparts, they still have time to pursue their interests outside the classroom.

We offer our boarders the flexibility to stay for the full term, on a weekly basis or on a day-to-day basis. Being able to stay in the House during exam times, for example, can be a great advantage giving extra concentrated study time and tutor support.

Located only a 30 minute train ride from Shanghai, Suzhou is a dynamic metropolis where modernity and tradition sit happily side by side. In contrast to Shanghai, Suzhou has less traffic and is less crowded but still has a thriving expat community with many of the top Fortune 500 companies based here.

Suzhou is over 2,500 years old with canals, stone bridges, pagodas and ancient gardens dating back to the Song Dynasty. There are many cultural riches to explore but the city is also known as one of the most innovative cities in China with good rail links, an underground metro system, chic modern apartments, world-class golf courses, fashionable shopping malls and a vast array of local and international dining options.

6. 30am The alarm goes off. Mr. Colenso makes sure we are all awake at 7am..

7. 30am Time for breakfast! A choice of eggs, bacon, porridge, cereal,

croissant or fruit. Bacon and eggs are my favourite!

8. 15am Registration and then lessons begin.

12..40pm - 1.pm Lunchtime. It's the busiest time as the house is open to the rest of the school.

Each year group spends lunch here each day. Everyone loves playing pool even Year 7

who can only just reach over the edge of the table. Haha ! Table football and table tennis

are also popular but without a doubt the Xbox gets the 1st prize - Nothing beats running,

jumping, sliding and grabbing without actually having to do it : )

3. 30pm Back to the house for homework or prep time, unless you've signed up for

extra curricula activities.

5. 30pm Dinner in the dining hall. Yum !

6pm Back to Boarding house for more homework or exam preparation.

8pm - 8. 30pm For those who have finished their homework, we head over to the sports hall or dance

studio for exercise. The pool table also gets good use and so does the television with

lots of great DVDs available.

At 10pm the house goes quiet again... Take a shower and then Zzzzzzzzz

Weekends Saturday mornings we're off to ECAs or have a well deserved lie in !!!

In the afternoon we either do school work or watch a film . Sometimes Mrs. Colenso

will take boarders out to the shops if they need to buy something.

Sunday A morning lie in or finishing off any homework. In the afternoon we often go to

Old Town Suzhou, bowling in Li Gong Di or spend a day in Shanghai.
