Alarm Function Ensures Rapid Response

Process AlarmsWhenever a process alarm is triggered, theICS informs the operator in a number ofways: an alarm mark in the system-messagesection of the display appears; an electronicbuzzer sounds; a voice message is given; andthe key lamp blinks. The operator thenopens the alarm summary panel, overviewpanel or alarm window to easily obtaindetails on the cause of the alarm.

Hierarchical AlarmsAlarms are classified into five levels accordingto seriousness: high-priority, medium priority, low priority, logging, or reference. Lower-level alarms are suppressed when higher-level alarms are in effect, to allow promptattention to urgent alarms.

Auto-repeating AlarmsIf a high-priority alarm has not beenprocessed properly and status has notreturned to normal, the alarm is repeatedautomatically, following a default timecycle.

Operation GroupsMultiple ICSs can be assigned to a specificplant as an operation group. This arrange-ment shuts out alarms and messages fromoutside the group, avoiding unnecessary con-fusion.

Engineering-oriented FCS Hierarchy Dual Operation and Redundancyfor Superior Reliability

Control-functionConfigurations DescribedArchitecturally andHierarchicallyThe control function needs to be configuredmore rationally for extremely large and com-plex applications. To meet this requirement,FCS control functions are architecturallydescribed. With its partitioned control draw-ings and areas (each containing functionblocks as the smallest unit), the FCS can beefficiently engineered for even huge andcomplex applications.

Control AreasA control area is a large unit describing controlof one plant area which contains, for example, reactors, distillation columns, or furnaces. It isa logically partitioned, virtual control station.Up to eight independent control areas can beestablished in one FCS.■ The control function of each control areacan be loaded, builder-configured, and test-operated. Each control area can be engi-neered without affecting other control areas, aslong as these other areas are not involved insignal exchanges.■ A maximum of eight control areas can beengineered simultaneously, greatly improv-ing engineering productivity.■ The data resources of a specific controlarea can be shared with other areas. Forexample, data in one control area, whereequipment A is located, may be copied orpartially modified as desired, and then usedfor equipment B and C which are located inother control areas.

Control DrawingsA control drawing is a control group com-prised of two or more function blocks.Grouping partial-control functions of equip-ment in one group, for example, can makeengineering and maintenance operations easi-er. Plant monitoring, process monitoring, and other cross-sectional functions can alsobe grouped as a control drawing.■ Function blocks of different types, such asregulatory and sequence blocks, can residewithin the same control drawing.■ Function block signals can be freely exchangedbetween control drawings. The I/O connec-tions between function blocks in differentcontrol drawings are the same as those withinone control drawing.■ The loop configuration as well as thegrouping of function blocks in a controldrawing can be registered as a model orcomponent. They can then be copied ormodified, making engineering more productive.

Yokogawa's Next-generationFCSA controller-freezing glitch while your plant isin operation could seriously disrupt the entireproduction schedule. The CENTUM CSsystem employs dual redundancy for muchof its equipment, from the V net communica-tions function and node buses to the RISCchip-incorporated process controller (CPU).In the event of a glitch, control of the processorcards is instantly transferred to the standbycard without a moment's failure, ensuringunimpaired high-speed processing and relia-bility.

"Pair-and-spare" DesignThe "pair-and-spare" design, with dual-redundant processor card and CPU, offersfunctions not possible in conventional standbyredundancy design.■ Transient computation errors, which can betriggered by electric noise or caused at aninitial failure stage, are detected when thetwo CPUs make computational comparisons. This function is backed up instantly usingthe standby processor card.■ The standby processor card executes controlcomputations at all times, in synchronizationwith the current processor card. Thus con-trol continuity is maintained regardless ofcard transfers.■ The "pair-and-spare" design has also con-tributed to an impressive improvement incomputation-error detection for the CPU.■ The design also relieves system-designersfrom the extremely complicated engineering

task of making allowances for cases of dis-continuity, when preparing an FCS-compatibleuser control program.

Engineering Support atEvery StageSystem engineering begins the moment asystem is conceptualized, and continuesthrough design, manufacture, testing, startup, functional modifications and additions, upgrading, and so on. The CENTUM CSengineering function provides optimumcapability and support for a friendly workenvironment at each of these stages, withcomplete system support.

Open EngineeringEnvironment and ShortLead TimeTo rationalize system generation and de-bugging operations, which make up the bulk ofengineering work, the CENTUM CS engi-neering environment is available at the ICSand PICS as well as engineering worksta-tions. This lets a number of engineers worktogether, and effectively shortens the leadtime required for engineering.

Full-fledged TestingFunctions To Meet YourNeedsWith the CENTUM CS test function, the statusof the test subject action is displayed on theengineering workstation in the same way it isdisplayed on the ICS operation panel. Thus, the engineer can view the actual operationimage while running a test, and can effec-tively test FCS processes.

FCS Simulation FunctionFCS functions and operations can be testedusing a simulator. Just one engineeringworkstation is needed to use this FCS simula-tor, allowing modifications to be made to thecurrently running system without using anactual FCS.

Wireless-debug FunctionThis function performs tests using an actualFCS. In the test, software-provided I/O signalsare used instead of actual field wiring. Thewireless de-bug function permits more elabo-rate testing operations than would otherwise bepossible.
