All Polyamp DC/DC Converters for railwayapplications are designed to be safe, technicallycompliant, reliable and cost effective.Applications include systems for surface andunderground trains powered by both electric and diesellocomotives, trams and special vehicles used by theoperators and maintainers. Systems can be categorisedas:Train systemsSystems used by the driver are specifically safetyconscious and a fault will either stop the train orautomatically revert it to an alternative fail safe mode.

Technical StandardsModern trains achieve savings of weight and space byusing battery voltage up to 110Vd.c. but most systemequipments require input power at 12V and 24Vdc.The DC/DC Converter transforms the basic 110Vdcto 12 and 24Vdc, but can also perform the inverse ifnecessary. i.e. convert 12 and 24Vdc to 110Vdc.

Train standardsPolyamp DC/DC Converters are designed to meet therailway specific standards for electronic equipmentonboard trains including those specified in EN50155and IEC60571. They are mechanically rugged forreliable operation in a very harsh environmentthroughout their whole lifeWhere these standards specify different levels forparticular conditions, applicable ratings will beconfirmed and agreed for individual customerapplications.An additional benefit of the Polyamp DC/DCConverters is that when they are used as a power sourcefor equipments, that in themselves are not compliantwith the EN50155 and IEC60571 standards, theyeffectively function as a filter and galvanic separationto shield those equipments. This allows the railwayoperator to use Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS)equipments for such applications.

Environmental specification

Ambient temperatureThe standard level is -25 to +55C but mostapplications specify -25 to +70C (T3).Polyamp DC/DC Converters can be supplied to operatein temperatures from -40C to +85C.EMCCompliant with the EN50121-3-2 and IEC62236-3-2EMC performance specified for electronic equipments.Shock and vibrationCompliant with the IEC/EN61373 requirements forbody mounted class B.Polyamp DC/DC converters are regularly used inmilitary vehicles and fork lifts, which have more severevibration requirements

Range of DC/DC ConvertersEN50155 and IEC60571 specify a nominal inputvariation of 30% including ripple but some otherspecifications define 40%. For modern trains withbetter d.c. supply systems they can be relaxed and formarkets still using RIA12 specifications, Polyamp canalso supply models that meet its surge requirement of3.5x nominal input voltage.
