    Rouzer Attended Fundraiser Held by Lobbyists

    In September 2011, candidate for N.C. 7th congressional attended fundraisers held by lobbyists for hiscampaign.

    The Star News reported, A group of N.C. lobbyists is hosting the fundraiser for state Sen. David Rouzer,R-Johnston, who recently announced his bid for the GOP nomination for the seat held by U.S. Rep. MikeMcIntyre, a Lumberton Democrat.[] State statutes prohibit lobbyists from giving to candidates for theGeneral Assembly, but there is no prohibition against those same lobbyists giving to congressional campaigns.

    Several other state lobbyists are listed at the top of the invitation. At the bottom is this sentence: Pleasenote that federal law recognizes the First Amendment rights of NC lobbyists and allows personalcontributions to be made to Congressional candidates!The flier seeks contributions ranging from $2,500for a host to $100 for a patron.     Rouzer Raked in Contributions from Lobbyists and North Carolina PACs. Since he'srunning for Congress, Rouzer is allowed to raise money for his federal campaign in ways notallowed a sitting North Carolina legislator. State legislators are forbidden to take contributionswhen the General Assembly is in session and are barred from ever receiving contributions fromlobbyists. Rouzer's congressional campaign was able to do both and his first official federalcampaign report shows a huge take in the first six weeks of his campaign [] On the list areseveral lobbyists, mostly representing Ag industries like the NC Pork Council's Angela Meier andTommy Stevens [] Although the individual contributions outpaced Rouzer's take from PACs,there are still plenty of familiar names who jumped into with both feet, including theaforementioned NC Pork Council, NC Farm Bureau PAC, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NorthCarolina and trial attorney PAC Ward & Smith.     In September 2011, Rouzer sponsored legislation to limit the discretion given to local governments to setstandards and regulation for many areas of government involvement including environmental policies tomedical malpractice suits. The bills would keep local governments from making any regulations morestringent than the federal government mandates, except when the state legislature approves the measure.
