I am honored to be re-elected
president of the Duluth Curling
Club (DCC) by the Board of
Directors. I would like to thank
all our managers and employees
that helped make last season a
success: Sue Jordon, Dick Wick-
lund, Barb Payette, Jack Kur-shoff, Jim Parmeter, John Parme-
ter, Joe Adamczak, Jeff Heik-
kila , Stacey Spaeth, Evan
Economos, and all the food &
beverage staff. I would like to
thank Jon Fiskness and Renee
Meyers for providing leadership
with our junior program, Nancy
Odden & Doug Britton for over-
seeing Hockey nights, Ken &
Joanne Doctuer for doing Friday
Fun nights, Kerry & Regis
Hadiaris for running the website, the members who chaired
bonspiels last season, and the
members that serve on the DCC
Board of Directors, the Ladies
Board and as league commission-
ers.
Several current and former mem-
bers of our club will be compet-
ing in Fargo, North Dakota at the
Olympic Trials to be Team USA
in Sochi, Russia. They are
Courtney George, AmandaMcLean, Aileen Sormunen, Jes-
sica Schultz, Tyler George, Jeff
Isaacson, John Landsteiner, Chris
Plys, Joe Polo, John Shuster and
Jared Zezel.. Good luck to all of
you!
The Chris Plys team and the Cory
Christensen team, with Anna and
Sonja Bauman, won the US Win-
ter World University Games
(WWUGs) trials in May and will
represent the USA in the
WWUGs event in Trentino, Italy
in December. John Landsteinerwas named the 5th for the Plys
team.
We had a very successful season
last year. We were able to apply
$20,000 toward the repayment of
the trustee account for the re-
model of the kitchen/bar area
from the general operation ac-
count. This is independent of the
individual donations and fund-
raising effort to the Legacy Ac-
count. We have continued towork with the Federal Prison in
Duluth this summer to repair the
wooden chairs in the lounge area.
Broken parts have been replaced
and the chairs have been refin-
ished. We have also added a
second fryer to the kitchen.
The DCC received $9400 froman anonymous donor to upgradethe webcasting capabilities at theclub. The funds will be used toinstall cameras that will cover all
of the sheets and monitors for thelounge area to see both ends ofthe ice. We need volunteers tohelp with both the technical andthe commenting aspects of the
broadcast for as many leagues aswe can cover. If you are inter-ested please contact Jim Luttinen

Director of Curling
P a g e 3
Its time to get ready for another
curling season. Starting dates and
clinics are yet to be determined as
we wait to find out when the
DECC will turn on the ice plant.
Team registration will open on
October 1 and close on October
13. Registration and league offer-
ings are part of the newsletter and
are also online.
The leagues offerings are the same
as past years with two changes.
The Tuesday 8pm league is an
open league (not a competitive
league as hoped for in the past)
and there is room for more teams.
The Thursday 8pm league will be
a mens-only league. We will
offer the Sunday 4pm Special
league again this season, limited to
10 teams. To join this league,
each team will need one clubmember (corporate, senior, or jun-
ior instructional) and fill the re-
maining spots on the team for
$100. This is a great opportunity to
bring new curlers into the club or
have junior curlers play with their
parents or other family members.
The Sunday 6 pm league will ex-
pand to 24 teams and some games
will be played at 4 pm. All other
leagues will be limited to 18 teams
and as in the past, if teams are re-
turning to the same league they
participated in last season, with 3
or more rostered players, they will
retain first rights in that league.
The number of teams in last sea-
sons other leagues were as fol-
lows:
Mon 5pm -18 teams, Mon 7pm
mixed -18 teams, Tue 6pm mens -
18 teams, Tue 8pm open -10
teams,
Wed 5pm open -18 teams, Wed
7pm womens -10 teams (11 is
max), Wed 7pm beginners -6
teams
Thu 4pm open -17 teams, Thu
6pm open18 teams, Thu 8pm
mens 15 teams.
So if you are a new team, please
select a league which has openings
or you may be disappointed. If you
are attempting to change leagues,
please make sure you also choose
your current league or you may
find you have no league to play in.
Every season, the same curlers do
most of the volunteering in the
club. We need the membership to
step up and volunteer to help or-
ganize and run the many bonspiels
and other events we host. We also
need volunteers as league commis-
sioners and instructors to teach the
many groups coming to the club to
learn to curl. Please contact me ifyou are interested.
We are very fortunate to have the
ice available for almost unlimited
practice; however there are some
common sense rules we need to
follow. IF YOU ARE THE
LAST PERSON LEAVING
THE ICE, PLEASE TURN OFF
THE LIGHTS. LAST SEASON
WAS BETTER BUT THERE
WERE MANY TIMES I
LOOKED DOWN ON THE ICE
AND THE LIGHTS WERE ON
BUT NOBODY WAS CURL-
ING. We must get better at this or
practice time could become re-
stricted. If you bring in guests,
they must complete the liabilitywaiver form and sign in the guest
book on the table near the ice entry
door. We are a private club and
our insurance carrier requires this.
If you are practicing, please throw
a rock or 2 before you use the nip-
per or rock boat. Many times I
have seen curlers assume the ice
needs their special attention.
You may be following other prac-ticing curlers and the ice is fine.
IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN
TRAINED HOW TO PEBBLE
OR USE THE OTHER ICE
EQUIPMENT, PLEASE DO
NOT PEBBLE OR USE THE
NIPPER AND ROCK BOAT.
THIS WILL ONLY INCREASE
THE WORKLOAD FOR THE
ICE CREW AND ALSO RE-
SULT IN LOUSY ICE FOR
THE REST OF THE DAY.
We are all looking forward to a
great season at the Duluth Curling
Club.

The Duluth Curling Clubs afternoon recreational curling for seniors including men and women interestedin learning the sportwill begin with a warm-up and instructional clinic at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 31 st.Once the season starts, senior curlers gather at 1 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday for club competition withseveral one-day mini-bonspiels planned, including a home-and-home rivalry with senior curlers from Eve-leths Curl Mesabi Club.
The Afternoons on Ice senior curling consists of eight-end matches that follow a recreational rather thanhighly competitive format with curlers changing positions every two ends so each team member can playeach position from lead to skip. Teams are formed at each session depending who comes to play on that dayand no league standings or won-loss records are kept.
The mini-bonspiels are held from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m. on dates to be determined and teams are made upby random drawing, but curlers then stay in the same positions for each game. The day-long spiels includetwo four-end games in the morning rounds, a lunch, and six-end championship and consolation matches inthe afternoon. The tentative exchange with Curl Mesabi seniors include two eight-end games with lunch in-between.
This year we will hold a two day bonspiel on December 12 & 17. We will play two games each day with allgames being 6 ends. We will start in the morning around 10 am, have lunch and play another six ends in theafternoon.
All DCC members 55 and overmen and womenare invited to participate in the afternoon curling, eventhose who also curl in evening leagues. The club offers a reduced annual membership fee for retirees whocurl only in the afternoon program. For more information on senior curling, contact Ellis Johns at 724-3146.
Senior Curling Opens with a
Warm-Up & Instructional Afternoon
ONE-ON-ONE
LEAGUEWell have One-on-One Curling again this year. Each league is limited to 10 players and we can haveup to four leagues. Curlers arrange their matches -we encourage the use of e-mail to avoid playingphone tag. The league is set up for one match perweek, however, make-up games can be played asarranged with opponent. There is a $10 fee to jointhe league that covers prizes at the end of the year.
The $10 is not paid as part of your regular leaguedues but is paid directly to me. Sign up in the officewith Dick and leave your $10 with him, or with me( Nancy Odden). If you have any questions or com-
ments, please contact me prior to the start of curling.

Junior CurlingJunior Curlers and Parents:
I will be involved this year in helping with the JuniorCurling on ice activities along with the Junior Curl-
ing Advisory Committee. Thanks to Renee Meyers,
the Host family and Jane Busche for getting together
this summer to help put together some ideas for the
2013-14 curling season. Thank you to Jon Fiskness
and John Shuster for running the on ice program in
the past. I helped with Junior Curling for several
years when Cindy Johnson began the program at our
club. Since I am retiring, I was asked to help out
again.
As you well know we have had some fine competi-
tive Junior Curlers through the years who also have
gone on to become State, National and World Cham-
pions. Today, some are competing for a run at an-
other Olympic year. Good luck to all of you. Not
every Junior Curler who registers and signs up to
learn the game and play have the incentive to play
competitively. Many play in bonspiels through out
the year or just enjoy the game itself. My goal is to
have all of you learn the sportsmanship, the ethics ofthe game, and the skills needed to actually play bet-
ter each year. This year our plan is to have several
weeks of ice time devoted to specific drills, some
class room time, use of the video camera to see your
own delivery style and more challenging skills incor-
porated in the program. I have purchased materials
from the Canadian Curling Association and even
videos for our new young Junior Curlers. We will
continue the DCC Lakeside Curling Jr. Club tourna-
ment the second half of the year and our own DCC
Jr. bonspiel January 17, 2014 where all Jr. curlers
who wish may play against other clubs. This event
will now be called the Elizabeth Busche Memorial
Bonspiel in honor of our Elizabeth. I also plan to
have a few Fridays open from 4pm to 6pm with
minimal instructors for more ice time. This will be
posted during the season but limited as our club will
have many events going on. During Christmas
break, the State Junior Curling play downs will be at
our club again this year.
Some dates to remember:
October 22, 2013 registration at our club from 4pm
until 5pm. A parent needs to be able to sign the stu-
dent up and pay for the current year.
October 29, 2013 we will have a banquet with ashort meeting and a dinner provided for Jr. curlers
(others can purchase dinner tickets for $5.00).
Junior Curling will start November 5, 2013 from
4pm to 5:30pm.
As always, we are looking for more volunteers to
help with instruction. Every week, I will have a
schedule for each level to work on. It's important the
instructor knows how to curl. You do not have to be
a specific level curling instructor. Parents are wel-comed to help the instructors. Older Junior curlers
who have played are also welcomed to instruct. We
do have a little money for instructors for each week
that you do help.
Connie Host will be helping with the Web page and
posting events and other information. Go to JuniorCurling.
See you soon,

USWCA ReportGreetings from the USWCA.
The mission of the USWCA is to
develop, nurture and promote the
sport of curling among women
and all youth. Membership is open
to any regularly organized curling
club in the US with women curl-
ers.
Membership allows women to
participate in several USWCA
sponsored events including the
Womens National Bonspiel and
Senior Womens National
Bonspiel. They sponsor the Five
Year and Under Challenge as well
as sponsoring two international
tours: the Friendship Tour with
Canada and the Scot Tour with
Scotland.
USWCA is a strong supporter of
junior curling and offers travel
assistance to teams as well as jun-
iors looking to advance the sport
of curling.
This years Senior Womens
Bonspiel will be held in Grand
Rapids, MN at Itasca Curling
Club November 20-24, 2013.
Good luck to our Duluth curlers
who will be attending.

Nov. 1 deadline.
There are many Five and Under
