City of Rockville Maintenance Worker I—Parks and Facilities (Horticulture)

Job Summary: This position is responsible for performing routine tasks involved in the care and maintenance of City of Rockville parks, playgrounds, facilities, landscape and rights-of-way. The work requires regular con-tacts with maintenance employees and with other City employees and periodic contacts with contractors and the general public. Incumbents work independently and work is subject to general supervisory review. Incum-bents are required to work various shifts and overtime as needed.

Essential Job Functions: Primary functions of Horticulture, Installation and maintenance of summer annuals, Installation and maintenance of spring bulbs, Installation and maintenance of perennials, Installation and maintenance of shrubs and small trees, Cleans and maintains parks, playgrounds, facilities, and rights-of-way and performs landscaping activities, Operates push mowers, walk-behind mowers, riding mowers, line trim-mers, edgers, blowers and other parks maintenance equipment, Operates hand and power spray equipment in the application of pesticides and herbicides, Inspects and repairs playground equipment, Mixes and applies chemicals and fertilizers, Waters, fertilizes, cultivates, trims, rakes and edges grasses, shrubs and trees, Picks up and disposes of trash around buildings and empties trash cans and recycling containers, Moves heavy sup-plies and equipment and climbs ladders in order to accomplish tasks, Removes trash, leaves, snow and ice from outside stairs, sidewalks, parking lots, bike and walking paths, etc., Ensures proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use, Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment and materials, Operates and main-tains equipment such as jackhammer, chipper, chain saw, and other powered hand tools, etc., Investigates and resolves various complaints filed throughout the City, Follows and enforces recommended safety practices and uses appropriate traffic safety devices such as cones, arrow boards and flagging signs, Reports damage to facilities and equipment, Performs emergency inspections and repairs such as snow/ice removal, storm clean-up, street repair, etc., Sweeps, shovels, rakes leaves, picks up litter and cuts, trims and loads brush, us-ing hand or chain saws, Assists and fills-in for other staff when necessary, Performs other duties as required.

Education and Experience: High school diploma; and three (3) years of progressively responsible work in the maintenance of parks, play-grounds, facilities, landscape and rights-of-way; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Qualifications: Must possess a valid state commercial driver's license (CDL) with required endorsements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the methods and equipment used in parks, playgrounds, fa-cilities, and rights-of-way grounds maintenance work and landscaping activities, Some knowledge of occupa-tional hazards and safety precautions for the proper execution and usage of a variety of mowers and power tools, Ability to follow oral and written instructions, Ability to perform tasks, which involve prolonged standing, pushing, pulling, climbing, and stooping, Ability to handle and operate light and heavy hand and power equip-ment, Ability to independently perform maintenance duties, Ability to read and interpret chemical labels, written instructions and operation manuals, Ability and willingness to perform other duties as assigned; including but not limited to snow removal, storm debris clean up, assistance with special events and other emergencies at times other than regularly scheduled work hours.

I-66 from Virginia empties onto Constitution Avenue. Continue east on Constitution Avenue and turn left on 6th Street, NW. Turn

right on E Street, NW. Turn left on North Capitol Street. Drive approximately 2 miles and turn right on Michigan Avenue, NE. You

will soon see the dome of the Basilica on your left marking a university entrance at 4th Street, NE.

Driving from the South, I-95

When I-95 intersects the Capital Beltway in Springfield, Virginia, follow I-395 North. After crossing the Potomac River, take the

"Route 1 North" exit. The road becomes 14th Street, NW. Turn right on Constitution Avenue. Turn left on 6th Street, NW. Turn right

on E Street, NW. Turn left on North Capitol Street. Drive approximately 2 miles and turn right on Michigan Avenue, NE. You will

soon see the dome of the Basilica on your left marking a university entrance at 4th Street, NE.

Driving from the East, Route 50

Take Route 50 West (becomes New York Avenue) and exit on South Dakota Avenue. After approximately 1.3 miles, turn left onto

Monroe Street. Follow Monroe Street until it merges with Michigan Avenue. You will see the dome of the Basilica on your right

marking a university entrance at 4th Street, NE.

Driving from the Northwest, I-70 to I-270

From Frederick, Maryland, take Exit 53, I-270 South to Washington. I-270 divides. Take the 495 East, Silver Spring/College Park

exit (two left lanes). You will eventually feed onto the beltway, I-495. Continue on I-495 and take Exit 22 B, the Baltimore/

Washington Parkway. Continue traveling south on the Parkway and exit at Route 50 West. Take the South Dakota Avenue exit. After

approximately 1.3 miles, turn left onto Monroe Street. At Michigan Avenue, Monroe Street ends. Bear left and you will see the dome

of the Basilica on your right marking a university entrance at 4th Street, NE.

Driving from the North, I-95 to I-495

Follow I-95/I-495 South to Exit 22B, the Baltimore/Washington Parkway. Continue traveling south on the Parkway and exit at Route

50 West. Take the South Dakota Avenue exit. After approximately 1.3 miles, turn left onto Monroe Street. Monroe Street ends at
