1. What is plagiarism?2. How to avoid
plagiarism?
WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?“Using information from someone or somewhere else
& passing it off as your own work.
• Sometimes it is committed on purpose• Sometimes it is accidental
Either ways, it is a serious academic offense, which all students must learn to avoid!”
(Join the dots: DBS online tutorial series, 2013)
PLAGIARISM IS Not referencing a source you used Not referencing an unusual source –something you heard from a TV or a radio
show Not referencing a source because it has no author “Not using “quotation marks” & in-text citations for quotes Using content from another source & just changing it around a little Collaborating with another student on an individual assignment Re-submitting one of your older essays as a new assignment –even just part of
it! Copying a friend’s work” (Join the dots: DBS online tutorial series, 2013).
HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM Take the habit of taking down the full detail of
a source, with page numbers Always take concise notes Reference Follow your referencing style! Know your options; quoting, paraphrasing,
summarising(Join the dots: DBS online tutorial series, 2013).
WHAT IS REFERENCING?“A mention or citation of a source of information in a book or
article” (“Reference”, n.d.).
To ensure that sources are well referenced, there are standards for your to follow
Your school’s referencing standard is the APA style
YOU CAN REFERENCE TO… Support your arguments “Establish you credibility Verify your research Provide your reader with the possibility
to source documents used in your research ”
