dBn stands for ‘drum’ ‘bass’ and ‘nokia’. Our hack was in-

spired by the ‘drum and bass - (DNB)’ genere which is a

type of rave music that originally emerged in the mid 1990s.

The genre is characterized by fast breakbeats (typically

between 160–190 bpm), with heavy bass and sub-bass lines.

Drum and bass began as an offshoot of the United Kingdom

rave scene of the very early 1990s. Over the first decade

of its existence, the incorporation of elements from vari-

ous musical genres led to many permutations in its overall

style1.

dBn encourages a funfilled physical user experience by al-

lowing users to generate customized drum and bass beats in

their very own style. They can dance, jump, walk, skip or

simply tap to create amazing beats through this fashionable

hack for the Nokia N8.

The hack is designed around a pair of shoes fitted with

sensors and a micro controller which are then hardwired

into the nokia handheld device. The thick, colorful cables

running from the shoes to the device bring out a sense of

physicality and reflect upon the retro fashion. A granular

audio synthesizer and sequencer software is loaded onto the

handheld device. Pre-loaded samples will be associated with

the input from the sensors which can then be mixed and audio

can be output through headphones or transmitted to loud-

speakers with an other colorful cable.

Once the shoes are hardwired to the device, the users can

tune their shoes for a short duration by moving their feet

in different directions. Each movement creates a unique

sound! Once the tuning session has completed the users can

move their feet in any way to generate customized drum and

bass beats.

Project Status & Future

We are currently developing a proof-of-concept prototype

of the dBn hack. In the future we would like to extend the

prototype with different genres and sensors.

Three design students from the Royal College of Art and Im-

perial College London doing a double masters in Innovation

Design Engineering (IDE). We are currently in the 2nd year

of our program and working on a group project that is aimed

at creating fresh interfaces between the human boady and

digital consumer electronics.
