Secondary Creative Arts Week

This years Secondary Creative Arts week will focus on a wide rangeof activities aimed to enhance students creativity, collaboration,critical thinking and communication skills. Workshops andperformanceswill be takingplace insideandoutsideof school, duringlessons and at breaktimes.

We believe that all students shouldhave the opportunity to immersethemselves in the Creative Arts notjust as part of this week butthroughout their lives. During theweek the students will be providedwith opportunities which they maynot get to sample in a classroomenvironment. TheDBIS Creative Artsweek is a celebration of the creativearts within our school and community.

Jeremy Otto will be running aworkshop with our IGCSE Drama andArt students based on JapaneseBunrakuPuppetry. Theart studentswillhave the opportunity tomake Japaneseinspired puppets and the dramastudents will devise a piece of theaterinspired by Japanese music,storytelling and puppetry. This is anexcellent opportunity for our students

to be exposed to this unique art form and to work with a highlyregarded and talented ISTA artist.

Year 7 will be visiting the Compton Art Gallery to see the Graffitiartwork of Ceet. There will be a show and tell with the exhibitors and

this will be used as a stimuli for thestudents art lessons for the remainderof the term. Year 8 will focus onwatercolours and will be workingwith experienced fine arts teacherCarol Giblin.

Throughout the week students willhave the opportunity to be involved ina variety of Creative Arts workshopsduring breaks and lunchtimes; their

PE lessons will focus onDance andmovement; there will be a varietyof performance opportunities throughout theweek such asOrchestraDay, Drama Showcase and lunchtime jamming sessions.

Therewill be a Creative Arts Showcase featuring a display of Art workfrom every student, musical performances and the termly dramashowcase. The week will end with aCreative Arts Secondary HouseCompetition.

This Creative Arts week would nothave been possible without thewonderful teachers, staff, parents andstudents who have contributedadditional time and effort inprepration and delivering excitingactivities for our students.

Year 7 – Art is a Verb – Compton Gallery, DB North

Monday 15 June

World-renowned Graffiti artist Ceet, originated from the art scene inToulouse, a town in the south of France. Born in Algeria, he has beenseduced by transforming letters and colors from experiences in hisearly childhood years.

He has shared his vision of graffiti and design to shake up the way wethink and look at design and graffiti and Ceet ‘s work appears in

prestigious brands like Prada, EckoUnlt and Adidas.

Our Year 7 students will have theopportunity to visit the Compton ArtGallery at the DB North Plaza wherethey will see his exhibition and havethe opportunity tomeet and discuss theart work on display with the Artisthimself.

Using Ceet’s work as inspiration the students will then continue towork on creating their own Graffiti canvas’ with the assistance of MrFryer.

Whole School Orchestra Day

Tuesday 16 June

Students who have been learning anorchestral instrument for at least 3 termswillbe invited to participate in our annualorchestra day. The students will participatein sectional rehearsals with a specialistinstrumental teacher rehearsing with musicwhichwill be given to themon theday. Theywill then practice as part of a wholeorchestra, before putting the final touchestogether for a mini concert performed toparents at the end of the school day.

TheOrchestraDay is anopportunity for our current orchestra studentsto lead and support our younger students in their first experience ofperforming as part of an ensemble. They will be expected to assistwhere necessary and coach the beginner orchestra students. Makingmusic as part of a large group is not only inspiring but great fun andit really captivates the reasons for learning to play an instrument.

Year 9 and GCSE Drama Students

Wednesday 17 June

Born in Brisbane Australia but currently living in Hong Kong JeremyOtto trained as a Drama Teacher completing degrees in CreativeIndustries Drama and Secondary education. Jeremy says “ I guess Ihave been lucky finding what I love straight from finishing highschool, as teaching students Drama and Theatre is what I thoroughlyenjoy! I love seeing the change and dynamics of a drama classroomand what students can create. I am also a huge advocate for artseducation believing in the power of creativity and the skills learnthaving such a positive affect later in life.

Asanartist, I am inspiredby thepeoplearoundme, the students I teachand the many experiences that I am lucky to have. In terms ofperformance, I enjoy working with physical theatre and creatingthought provoking performances that aim to challenge the audiencesperceptions and ideas. As a practitioner, I find working with youngartists thoroughly enjoyable as they are more willing to experienceand take artistic risks.”

Jeremy will be running a workshop with our GCSE Drama and Artstudents based on Japanese Bunraku Puppetry. The art students willhave the opportunity to make Japanese inspired puppets and thedrama students will devise a piece of theater inspired by Japanesemusic, storytelling and puppetry. This is an excellent opportunity forour students to be exposed to this unique art form and to work witha highly regarded and talented ISTA artist. One groupwill be selectedto perform their piece at the Dramashowcase!

Year 8 – Water Colours

Wednesday 17 June

Experienced fine arts teacher Carol Giblin, who is currently workingas a supply teacher in our secondary school, is a specialist in watercolours. Prior to artsweekCarolwill be taking theY8 students througha history of impressionist landscape painting.

Starting with the power points on J M W Turner 1775-1851,continuing to the masters Claude Monet 1840-1926, Pierre-AugusteRenoir 1841-1919, Paul Cezanne 1839-1903, Camille Pissaro1830-1903, Vincent Van Gogh 1853-1890, Gustave Caillebotte1848-1894 and Edgar Degas 1834-1917. The techniques will belooked at in depth.

Students will review the artwork and techniques of contemporaryartists, including Chinese painting techniques. Techniques will bedemonstrated for, and practiced by, the students who will decide forthemselveswhich technique theywish touse.Various techniqueswillinclude wet on wet, splashing, stipple,dots, impasto, fauves and tonal values.

For the Wednesday afternoon paintingsession students will be asked to bring ina photograph (not a painting) of alandscape, seascape, cityscape that theyare keen to reproduce as a painting, usingtheir chosen technique.

The Y9 Discovery Final Event is a showcase of artefacts produced byYear 9 as part of a ‘Personal Choice Project.'

Students have been following the project based learningmethodology and this project centres on issues of concern amongsttheir peer group, within their community and globally. Studentsidentified the following topics: activities for teenagers in DB, socialmedia and pollution.

We would like to invite parents along with Year 6, 7 and 8 studentsto view the students creativity on Wednesday 17 June.

Creative Arts Exhibition and Drama Showcase

Thursday 18 June

Our annual Secondary Drama Showcase will take place on Thursdayevening at 7pm in the Globe Theatre. We have a wonderful group ofenthusiastic and talented students from Year 7 to 11 who are greatlylooking forward topresentingamixtureof scriptedanddeviseddramaperformances to an audience. All of the work presented has beendevised, rehearsed and directed by the students themselves.

Prior to the Drama Showcase there will be a Creative Arts Exhibition.Our Secondary students have been asked to select a minimum of 1piece of Art work which they created during the school year and thiswill be displayed as part of the exhibition. There will also beinstrumental performances by our Secondary students.

Family and friends of the performers are warmly invited to attend theevening,whichpromises tobehighly enjoyable andentertaining. TheCreative Art Exhibition will begin at 6pm. For those wishing to attendthe Drama Showcase we ask that all audience members be seated by6.55pm in order for the evening to start promptly at 7pm. TheShowcase will last approximately one hour.

House Creative Arts Competition

Friday 19 June

OnFridaymorning, all studentswill have the opportunity to representtheir house in Dance, Drama, Visual Art or Music, in our inauguralHouse Arts Competition.

With limited time andwithout teacher support, studentswill be askedto work collaboratively to fulfil a creative brief that will be given tothem that morning.

OurYear 10 studentswill act as student leaders during thepreparationandplanningphases.All housegroupswill showcase theirwork in theGlobe in front of a panel of carefully selected judges, who willultimately decide on a winning house for each category. The goal ofthe competition is to encourage all students to think creatively, workas part of a house teamwith students fromavariety of year groups, andto have fun!

Monday 15 June

African Drumming

Mrs Lambert will hold an African DrummingCircle Extravaganza.Anyonewanting tomakesome noisy music and wake up our Primaryschool is invited to participate. Techniquessuch as Call and Response, Layering andCommunication through music will beexplored. This will take place on Mondaylunchtime.

Drama Games

MsMalcomess andMs Prior, alongwith some talented IGCSEDramastudents, will help run some fun drama games activities on Mondaylunchtime of Creative Arts Week. No experience is necessary, just awillingness to get involved and have fun. All students (and teachers!)are warmly invited to join in, or to simply come along and beentertained!

Theatre Sports

MsMalcomess andMs Prior, alongwith some talented IGCSEDramastudents, will help run some fun theatre sports activities on Tuesdaylunchtime of Creative Arts Week. No experience is necessary, just awillingness to get involved and have fun. All students (and teachers!)are warmly invited to join in, or to simply come along and beentertained!

Graffiti Art

Fancy yourself as aGraffiti Artist? JoinMr Fryer outside the Secondarybuilding transformahuge schoolwalled sizedcanvas intoanamazingpiece of Graffiti art inspired by the Year 7 visit to the art exhibitionbased on Ceet. Spray cans will be provided and masks however, becareful with your clothes, and of course the school building!

Wednesday 17 June

Street Dance

Mrs Biggins our Primary school show choreographer will run aworkshop based on Street Dance. No dance experience necessaryjust come along to the Globe on Wednesday lunchtime and havesome fun.

Mr Draper is a professional photographer who has travelled aroundtheworld formany years taking photos for RoughGuides. To take partyouwill need to bring your owndigital camera to school asMrDraperwill work alongside students to enable them to get the most out ofusing their camera's.

Graffiti Art

Spray cans will be provided and maskshowever, be careful with your clothes, and of course the schoolbuilding!

Samba

Love the sound of Latin American rhythms? Join Mrs Draper for asession on Samba. She will introduce students to a variety of Sambainstruments and rhythms.Noexperience is necessary just peoplewhowould like to have some fun and make music!

In preparation for the Drama Showcase in the evening students willhost anoutsidepractice andperformance for those students interestedinwatching somedrama.Thiswill beaglimpsebefore thebig eveningevent.
