EDITORIAL NOTE

CONTENTSPunctuality gives access to opportunities

Punctuality is very important in every sphere of life including one’s personal and professional life. Being a crucial factor in personal relationships, it can be our biggest asset or our biggest liability for success. Nothing can ever replace it and it is indispensable for career growth. Punctuality speaks of our time management skills. Punctuality reflects the importance of time. It shows that we care and respect our subjects and genuinely interested in what we do. It displays our fidelity and commitment in our work. While coming late to the office or to any place is accepted sometimes, but being late to a meeting or failing to keep up with an appointment can cause real trouble. It tarnishes our image and makes people presume us as disorganized, irresponsible and unreliable persons. Sometimes we just cannot avoid being late. In such cases we should at least try to reduce the damage. This begins with informing the concerned persons that we will be late and apologize to him/her. Ask if there is any way we can compensate for the inconvenience we caused. To be punctual it is advised to schedule our activities every day. Be realistic and ensure that the schedule is not overwhelming. Avoid any disruptions and rework. Do not lose your cool, take proactive approach, listen to reasons and offer inputs if necessary because punctuality plays a driving force for our life time career guidance and makes us cope up to any prevailing situations.

From the Desk of the PrincipalDear Readers,

This issue of Maram Voice is rather late. My sincere apology to all our readers. The delay was caused by a number of factors like non availability of current, change of computers and crash of the server of the College placed in USA, change in the leadership of

the editorial team etc. Adding to all these Manipur also witnessed the longest economic blockade and bandh of the century, which lasted for 100 days! Really incredible. The general plethora of inactivity, bandhs, strikes and backwardness of the region affected us as well. There was a time when things looked bleak and hopeless. I wish to make this as the crux of my message to all our readers. We get influenced by our surroundings. It has tremendous persuading effects on human minds. Human minds and our whole system is the result of our perception of the reality. If the reality outside is dynamic, then our system is as well and vice versa. Being a social being, mankind is the sum total of what the society is. The evils and goodness of society is immediately reflected in mankind. He cannot run away from it. However hard we try to resist the lethargic influence of society on us at a certain point we succumb to it. We cannot just avoid that. We went through a tough time during the blockade and bandh days. The price of gas went up to 2000 rupees per cylinder! One kilogram of potatoes was priced at 55! Nobody seemed to be interested in the well being of the people in Manipur in those days. Thank God the days are over. Very little was done to improve the situation. Ordinary people, Administrative Officers and including the guardians of the People – Military Personnel were also intimated and they could do nothing to alter the deplorable situation of the place. When everything seemed dark and hopeless, the spirits of students as well diminished in many areas of activities. They too entered into a deep slumber of lethargy and general indifference. Now those days are over. Life is returning to the state, villages and campus. The Maram Voice has undergone changes during these embryonic days and it has been christened as DBCMaram Voice. I wish all our readers a good reading of the articles by our students and faculty. Wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year 2012.

Yours lovinglyFr. Benny James SDB

13 May, 2011, Maram: Temperature at DBC Maram suddenly soared high when the “Shepherd of Becchi” was about to land on its soil. The bicentennial birthday celebration of Don Bosco brought smiles and series of activities at the college campus. The college authorities and teachers drove fire into the heart of many competitors to outdo the others –all to learn and know more about the friend and father of youth. Spiritual, mental and physical preparedness called for various course of actions. Accordingly, the following string of events was recorded: singers with best melodies, in single, in duet and in group enthralled the listeners and added solemnity to the occasion. Quizzers came prepared on Saturday and exhibited their detailed knowledge on the life story of Don Bosco. Many budding poets were born and made their presence felt, exulting the personality of Don Bosco. Painters brought to life vividly the figure and shape of Don Bosco for the public eye to feast with pleasure. Fancy dressers, little Boscos caused flurry to all the beholders, especially the little children along the road. Thus, the pilgrimage of Don Bosco, which passed through Don Bosco College, Maram, was given a befitting welcome by the Bosconians at Maram. Competitors, winners and lovers of Don Bosco will cherish this brief but intense moment for a long time to come.

Rev. Sr. Teresa, the Provincial of the Salesian Sisters of Guwahati Province, paid her official visit to the college on 13th May which coincidentally happened to be the feast day of their Co-foundress, St. Mary Domenica Mazzarello. She addressed the students during the morning assembly after which the editors of the DBCMaram Voice had a brief interaction with her. Here is the excerpt of it:

Q. Mother, you have already visited our institution quite a number of times. What is your impression about the college?

A. Well, to tell you the truth, I feel so happy to come here and meet the young people. Today they are here with us; tomorrow they will be leaders. It is a great joy for me to see so many young people profiting by the quality education offered here.

Q. Your congregation was founded by Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello. Could you tell us something about your Co-foundress whose feast we celebrate today?

A. She came from an ordinary family but characterized by deep faith. She was a smart girl appreciated by parents and neighbours. A serious attack of typhoid at the age of 23 had a profound spiritual effect on her. The experience of her physical frailty deepened her abandonment to God and prompted her to open a dress-making shop to teach local girls to work, pray and love God. The first meeting with Don Bosco in 1964 made an impact in her life and in 1972 Don Bosco chose her to begin the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.

Q. We are told that your congregation has its presence

in all the five continents of the world. What is the present strength of your Sisters?

A. We are around 15,000 Sisters. In Europe, there is a sharp decline in vocations while in Asia particularly in India, the vocations are on the rise.

Q. What is it that binds such a huge number of Sisters working together for a common mission?

A. First of all, motivation. Jesus is the centre of our life. We are one big family of God working together in the spirit of Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello. For Him we move, live and are ready to move to the end of the world.

Q. One message for the young Bosconians of Maram, please.

A. Live in God’s presence; act in God’s presence and to live for His glory.

On 8th September Mr. Fernando, a professor of the Department of English from Santiago addressed the students during the morning assembly. He is on his maiden visit to India for student and faculty exchange programme. He expressed his happiness of seeing so many young people. The professor was also all praise for the beauty of the diverse cultures existing in our region and added, “Be proud of what you are.” The many experiences that he shared kept the students enthused and encouraged.
