Go for a Swim Do me a favour. Stop five random people during your daily routine and ask them whether or not they can swim. Not thread water, not dog paddle or stay afloat, but swim – as in do a proper stroke. You will be amazed to find out that the majority of answers may be a no. Strange right? Especially considering that we live on a small rock, completely surrounded by water. To be quite frank, this is not unusual; it is actually the norm in most other islands in the Caribbean and though younger kids seem to be able to swim, their parents, have not yet taken the plunge!

Other than perhaps saving your life, there are many good and healthy reasons to learn to swim.

Full Body WorkoutSwimming practically works all of the muscles in the body if the routine consists of a variety of strokes. Regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. It can even serve as the cross-training element in your weekly workout schedule.

Low ImpactSwimming is easy on the joints and perfect for persons who cannot participate in high impact exercise such as aerobics. When the human body is submerged in water, it automatically becomes lighter. This means that the pool or the ocean provides the perfect place to work on stiff muscles and achy joints,

especially if you are injured, overweight or suffer from arthritis.

Weight ControlCoupled with the fact that swimming allows you to build endurance, increase flexibility and tone muscles, swimming is a great way to burn calories and therefore aids in weight control when combined with a healthy diet and other exercise activity such as jogging or power walking.

Stress ReliefSwimming is a relaxing and peaceful form of exercise which helps alleviate the stress of the daily routine. As you get better on your strokes, try to let your mind wander or even simply focus on nothing but the rhythm of your stroke. You will find yourself benefiting from an improved sense of well being, leaving you re-energised and ready to go on with the rest of your day.

Social ActivitySpending time swimming in a group or even just swimming on the beach will definitely prove to become a great opportunity to meet new people.

Beat the HeatSwimming is the cheapest way to cool off in the sweltering heat and provides wonderful recreational activities for individuals and families alike.

In the business world the characteristics necessary for growth and promotion within an organisation don’t only bear on an individual’s professional

abilities but also rely heavily on social interaction. Growing up in a society where education and higher learning was stressed upon significantly, led many to believe that in order to live a comfortable life, the attainment of higher education was the order of the day. Education and relevant experience are definite precursors to the successful attainment of gainful employment. The aforementioned, however, without concern for social interaction and emotional intelligence may be detrimental to one’s advancement within an organisation or becoming a successful leader.

A LOOK INTO EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, assess, and manage the emotions of oneself, of others, and of groups. The steps to understanding emotions involve accurately assessing the emotionsthen using them to promote thinking and development. This requires understanding non-verbal communication, such as body language and facial expressions.

Emotions help prioritise what we pay attention and react to but the emotions that we perceive from others can carry a wide variety of meanings. When someone is expressing an emotion, like anger, the observer must consider the cause. For example, if your boss is acting angrily, it could be because he or she got a parking ticket right before your meeting or that your boss has been arguing with their spouse. The anger may not necessarily be a reaction to their dissatisfaction with your work, even though your boss expresses anger when interacting with you.

That is why regulating emotions, responding appropriately and responding to the emotions of others are important aspects of emotional management for all staff for healthy social interaction.

THE ART OF THE CRTIQUE

The concept of emotional intelligence has many meaningful applications; one such application relates to the proper communication of feedback and criticism. Consider this example. A seasoned engineer heading a software development project was scheduled to make a presentation to the Product Development Director. The team led by the engineer had worked long days, supported each other and were proud to make the presentation on the fruit of their labour.

As the engineer finished his presentation on months of work, the Product Development Director turned to him and asked sarcastically, “How long have you been out of graduate school? These specifications are ridiculous. They have no chance of getting passedmy desk.”

The engineer, utterly embarrassed and deflated, sat glumly through the rest of the meeting, reduced to silence.

For the next few weeks the engineer was obsessed with the remarks made by Product Development Director. Dispirited, depressed and convinced that he would never get another assignment of importance at the company; he considered leaving, despite enjoying his work there. Finally the engineer went to speak to the Product Development Director; reminding him of the meeting, the critical remarks, and pointing out their demoralising effects.

The Product Development Director was astonished; he had no idea that his remarks, meant as a throwaway line, had been so devastating to the engineer. In fact,

the Product Development Director thought that the software plan was promising, but needed more work; he hadn’t meant to dismiss it as utterly worthless.

IN CONCLUSION

In a company, everyone is part of the system, and feedback is the lifeblood of the organisation. The exchange of information lets people know if the job they are doing is going well, needs to be fine-tuned, upgraded or redirected entirely. Without feedback from superiors, subordinates are in the dark; they have no idea how they stand with their boss or peers in terms of what is expected of them, and any problems will only get worse as time passes.

In essence, criticism is one of the most important tasks of a manager yet it is most dreaded by the ones receiving it. Like the sarcastic Product Development Director, too many managers have not mastered the crucial art of providing feedback. This deficiency costs any company greatly. Indeed, the way in which criticisms are given and received go a long way in determining productivity, how satisfied people are with their work and how well employees work together.

job interview Dos & Don’ts You got the call; your job interview is coming up. You may be excited and nervous; but being well dressed and well prepared can make a world of difference in your confidence and how you do in the job interview.

Don’ts Dos Do dress appropriately for the industry; be conservative to show that you take the interview seriously. A good gage is to dress sharper than you would for a normal day of work.

Know the exact time and location of your interview and arrive about 10 minutes earlier, so you can compose yourself.

Be pleasant to the staff that you may encounter; their opinions may be solicited when making a final decision.

Offer a firm handshake to the interviewer(s), make eye contact and maintain good eye contact through-out your interview.

Respond to questions asked with specific examples including your professional experiences wherever possible to present yourself in a positive light.

Ask for clarification if you do not understand a question.

Speak clearly and concisely using good grammar and diction. If you get tongue tied, stop, breath and continue speaking slower than you were before.

Do ask questions as to what your role would entail

and the employer’s expectations of you.

Don’t make negative comments about your previous employer, co-workers or yourself.

Don’t slouch in the chair; sit up straight and be alert.

Don’t act as if you would take any job or are desperate for employment (even though that may be true).

Don’t answer your phone or text during an interview. Switch the phone to silent and give the interviewer(s) your full attention.

Don’t treat the interview casually, as if you are just shopping around; this could be insulting to the interviewer.

Don’t curse or use obscene language. This is verydisrespectful.

Don’t chew gum during your interview. If you want your breath to be fresh, chew gum when you are on your way to the location.

Don’t emphasise that money is your only interest in the job. Of course you want to make money but be genuinely interested in what the job entails.

Relax and have a great interview, you are in control!

Most times, knowing what you want and going after it, plays a huge role in the life of an entrepreneur. While sometimes it is

simply an opportunity, which you just can’t pass up but then again, some gold mines just fall into your hands at the right time. Despite the circumstance, one thing is certain; you must be self-motivated, relentless and in the words of Jermile Dwayne Daniel, “You have to be hungry!” At 35 years old, Jermile is the owner of the chain of stores that extends from Saint Lucia to the rest of the Eastern Caribbean. His journey to success began similar to that of the average person. He was born in Laborie, later moved to Castries where he attended the Anglican Infant and Primary Schools. He attended Saint Mary’s College then Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, a year later, the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus and lastly the “School of Life.” Dazzle Magazine is please to introduce you to the man behind The Cell Enterprise, Jermile Dwayne Daniel.

Dazzle: What was your initial career path?Jermile: “Am not sure I had a defined career path, I was always business-minded and liked playing the board game Monopoly but I always thought I would get into business, somehow. My first job after A-level was at the then Corporative Bank, now First National Bank. I worked there for a year as a teller. Not too long after, I got bored of it and decided to go to university. Since I was interested in business, I pursued an Economics & Management Degree and while at university, my interests grew and it took off from there.”

Dazzle: How did the conceptualisation for The Cell come about?Jermile: “I was a research specialist at the National

Skills Development Centre (NSDC) where I was responsible for researching the general economy in Saint Lucia, to advise persons and the Skills Centre to meet labour demands. The Cell started off with the realisation that the telecommunications market was being liberalised and there were immense

opportunities. At that time I was hungry, I was hungry to start off on my own. With that

hunger, ideas kept running through my head, day and night. I later took a trip to Miami where I noticed the variety of accessories for phones. Upon my return,I realised that there was only one company here doing that, but it was not affordable. It was then I recognised the opportunity to offer a better variety,

better products and better pricing. So, I went up to Miami again and bought a suitcase filled with accessories. I went around Castries like a mad man, looking for a spot to rent. I found a small place on Broglie Street, which became the first home of The Cell. I started off with two staff members.”

Dazzle: How old were you when you started off?Jermile: “I was 24, just about to turn 25.”

Dazzle: Did you have something to prove?Jermile: “I wouldn’t say I had anything to prove, it was sort of just meant to happen. It was my natural evolution in terms of me always being interested in business and being hungry to start my own enterprise. I didn’t like the feel of working for someone else; I was never good at taking orders. My focus has always been on being an entrepreneur.”

Dazzle: What or who inspired you?Jermile: “At the time I had read two books, the autobiography of Richard Branson, which is a must read book for any entrepreneur! The second book was Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. It speaks about money, liabilities and assets. It was really a mindset change in terms of how I looked at money.”

Dazzle: How many staff do you currently have?Jermile: “Right now we are up to 40 staff members in Saint Lucia.”

Dazzle: How long did it take to have your first regional branch?Jermile: “My first regional branch took less than a year to materialise. We started here in Saint Lucia in December 2002, we moved into Grenada in October 2003, into St. Vincent in November 2003, Guyana came after, Barbados and then St. Kitts and Nevis. We’ve grown to 10 locations in the 5 islands.”

Dazzle: How did you decide which island you would venture into first?Jermile: “After opening my first store in Saint Lucia in December 2002, Digicel offered me to become a retailer or agent for their products and services by March of the following year. I realised that their game plan was to run through the Caribbean and I figured, that they are coming all the way from Ireland, what is preventing me from doing the same thing in the Caribbean where I grew up? It was a partnership that developed and the relationship has helped me to move throughout the Caribbean as well.”

15 www.dazzlethemag.com DAZZLE

Page 16: Dazzle Magazine Issue 2

16 DAZZLE www.dazzlethemag.com

Dazzle: How do you keep track of your regional businesses?Jermile: “Good people properly positioned and strong processes. I get reports every single day, from every store. It is all about effective systems and efficient people.”

Dazzle: What are some of the challenges you have experienced?Jermile: “We have gone through various challenges over the 10 years. Initially, my major challenge was securing financing. Another challenge I faced is one faced by a lot of entrepreneurs; other people trying to convince you to do something other than what you are trying to do. There were so many negative voices, some not intentional but I was constantly told: “It won’t work.” “Why leave your job?” However, when I look back I was so focused, that I had already envisioned this business 10 years down the line. There was nothing that could have stopped me!”

Dazzle: How did you handle these challenges?Jermile: “I laughed it off. While it was not a conscious decision to laugh, I found myself laughing because it was comical. I was just really focused. They say entrepreneurs need to have laser-focus and that is exactly what I had.”

Dazzle: How many registered companies do you own?Jermile: [chuckle] “A few.”

Dazzle: Have you ever thought of quitting and why?Jermile: “Hmm…yes I have! There are stressful times

when you feel de-motivated. At these times, I wonder why don’t I just get a normal job, from 9-5, go home afterwards and do nothing. But truthfully, I would not want to be doing anything else.”Dazzle: What is your primary vision for the company?Jermile: “To be the largest mobile tech retailer in the region.”

Dazzle: What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs?Jermile: “Stay hungry! Stay focused! Know your primary vision and always analyse the potential for growth within your business.”

Dazzle: How do you handle competition?Jermile: “Competition pushes me, it really motivates me. I don’t believe in second place. I just think we are better!”

Dazzle: If you could do anything else in the world, what would it be?Jermile: “I think I would be a chef. I always thought I would be a really good chef. I am a decent cook! I’ve never burnt the house down! It is really relaxing. I think about being a chef and then I think about owning a chain of restaurants, I always come back to those natural business instincts.”

Dazzle: What do you do to distress?Jermile: “Not Enough! I no longer play monopoly but I play basketball and a bit of tennis. Basketball is a sport that really distresses me; I played throughout SMC and university. I also listen to music. I read inspirational books but again, not enough!!”

the Cell’s Management team

Page 17: Dazzle Magazine Issue 2

Dazzle: Name five essential things you do on a daily basis.Jermile: “1. Pray.2. Have to have my coffee in the morning.3. Review my reports.4. More coffee.5. News!”

Dazzle: What other projects have you undertaken in your community or in Saint Lucia?Jermile: “I am the Chairman of the Youth Enterprise Equity Fund, established in 2009 and a Director on the board of SLDB. I also visit schools across the island, as I am passionate about spreading my knowledge, which I hope will inspire other young persons.”

There are some interviews you wish could go on and on and this is one of those. Not many young persons have been able to accomplish what his has, and we only hope his story will be of inspiration to a young person trying to catch a break or achieve something more than just living. We at Dazzle Magazine wish Jermile a lot more success and of course we hope he improves those cooking skills. We urge our readers to stay hungry, keep focused and believe in yourself.

Variety is considered the ‘spice of life’ and here in the Caribbean the rich cultural diversity is often considered the most intricate detail of the is-

lands. What sets us apart from the rest of the world is not limited to our geographical location but the flare and richness of the multitude of races, ethnicities and cultures, which shared throughout the Caribbean. Saint Lucia is no different, playing home to a large number of these ethnicities and cultures.

On September 22nd, 2012 a contingent of Trinidadian nationals living here orchestrated an exhibition/trade show to commemorate the 50th Independence Anniversary of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,

which was on August 31st, 2012. The event was held at the Baywalk Shopping Mall Conference Room and sought to highlight the work of Trinidadians living in Saint Lucia and also featured some of the products, which are sold locally but are manufactured in Trinidad. The room was beautifully decorated in red, black and white reminiscent of the Trinidadian flag. The atmosphere was flamboyant, truly cognizant of Trinidandian culture; the ushers were dressed in carnival costumes and guests were greeted by the sweet sound of steel pan music.

Dionne Benn-Cooper, one of the main organizers told Dazzle Magazine a little about the event and what it took to host an event of such a nature:

“In Saint Lucia we have a great population of Trinidadians and Tobagonians here, many of whom own businesses. In observance of our 50th Independence Anniversary, we decided to call on these business owners and give them an opportunity to showcase their products and services, which are imported by Saint Lucia. We were happy that many of them obliged.”

Amongst some of the products featured were: Lahner cleaning products, Spotless & Supreme Bleach, KC Candy, Slimmer matches, Vienna sausages which

the Trinidadian – Saint Lucian connection

are all distributed by Renwick and Company. Other products featured were Lipton Tea, which comes in several flavours distributed and sold by Brydens and Partners Limited, Flavorite Ice Cream, distributed island wide and of course Fruta and the assortment of drinks distributed and sold by SMJ Beverages.

The Exhibition also featured fashion designer Lisa Barton-Volney manager and designer of ‘De Kloze Line’. The company started in Trinidad and later Mrs. Barton-Volney migrated to Saint Lucia with her husband. She focuses on custom pieces, including corporate uniforms, bridal and pageantry gowns, casual wear, formal wear and soft furnishings – all from her business in Entrepot.

Also featured was Caribbean Airlines, the national airline of Trinidad and Tobago, which offers the most affordable and comfortable flights to the Republic.

The event was well attended by Trinidadians and Saint Lucians alike, everyone basking in the allure of Trinidadian culture on display. Not only was there an exhibition component to the function but also the much anticipated cocktail section, featuring famous

Trinidadian cuisine such as ‘doubles’, shark and bake, corn soup, roti, callaloo, pastelles and an assortment of desserts to name a few. Attendees were pleasantly surprised and intrigued as they opened their palettes to ‘something new’.

“If people could leave here with one thing, it would be to get a taste of our culture. People often go to Trinidad for shopping, for parties and of course carnival is a big thing but we are so much more than that. We have so many different heritages coming together to form the Trinidadian culture and Diaspora. Every part of the world makes up Trinidad”, were the words of Mrs. Benn-Cooper.

The party had only just begun as people were soothed by the sounds of the band ‘Skip Monday’, as they performed a multiplicity of music genres, truly showcasing the diversity, which exists in Trinidad. By the end of the night the exhibition had turned into a little carnival, as attendees were carefree and enjoyed themselves. Organizers were heartened by the turnout and see this as a sign of even better things to come.

She has had the opportunity to perform at several national events, which she says “was always fun, and made her feel very proud.” Darcel’s extraordinary talent, hard work and perseverance have surely harboured success as she currently performs in the celebrated Broadway production, The Lion King in London.

Can you believe that her greatest achievement as part of The Lion King cast still gets her nervous? So, not only did Dazzle get tips on how to calm nerves, she suggests “deep breathing and envisioning the performance going the way I want it to,” Dazzle Magazine sought to find out about Darcel’s graceful transformation from aspiring dance to professionalperformer.

Dazzle: How does it feel to be part of The Lion King London and how was your first day experience?Darcel: “Surreal is the best word to describe how it feels and also (my inner child response) freaking incredible! At risk of sounding cheesy, it really is a dream come true for me. My first day in rehearsal was scary and very challenging but also very exciting. The vocal rehearsal was a very new experience for me, and as worried as I was it turned out to be a lot of fun. The dance rehearsal was very physically and mentally demanding but despite the exhaustion and pain (haha) I loved it. My first performance on stage is a bit of a blur. The moments leading up to my first entrance were quite an adrenaline rush. I was so nervous that I honestly don’t remember it at all.”

Dazzle: How did you become a professional dancer?Darcel: “Copious amounts of training and preparation. I trained at university and then continued with regular training after that (i.e. going

to the gym, taking dance classes etc.)”

Dazzle: How long have you been dancing? Darcel: “Since I was 5 years old.”

Dazzle: What pushed you into dancing? Darcel: “My Mom used to be a dancer and she got me started. I fell in love with it and it’s been a passion ever since.”

Dazzle: What dancer(s) inspired you? Darcel: “My mom of course, Alvin Ailey, Judith Jamison, Martha Graham (to name a few).”

Dazzle: What forms of dance have you studied? Darcel: “I have studied, Ballet, African, Modern and Contemporary.”

Dazzle: Did you dance Quadrille at school? Darcel: “Not at school but for a little bit with Helen Folk Dancers. I enjoyed it very much at the time.”

Dazzle: Which one are you performing now? Darcel: “Right now I would say I’m performing Modern dance.”

Dazzle: Why do you love to dance and how do you feel when you perform? Darcel: “Always a difficult question for me to answer. It is hard to describe the feeling when I’m dancing. It’s like I’m transported into another world – an escape. It is a carefree, happy, sometimes very emotional place. It is also an outlet to express some of my inner most emotions – alive, carefree, emotional!”

Dazzle: Who makes up your support team? Darcel: “My family, my close friends and my fiancé.”

Dazzle: Do you hope to inspire others to dance too? Darcel: “Definitely! It is such a profound art form and what I experience when I dance is such a beautiful feeling. It is so fulfilling that even though it is a difficult career path, I would encourage anyone who is passionate about it to pursue it.”

Dazzle: If dance was not your career choice/path, what would you be doing instead? Darcel: “I think I would be a physiotherapist. It is another interest I picked up when I was at university and my second major, Kinesiology and Health Science was a start toward that career path.”

Naturally, home is where the heart is and that is Darcel’s favourite place, “wherever her close friends, family or fiancé are. With a strong support team, keen enthusiasm, humility and profound determination Darcel keeps on dancing. In the next five years, Darcel hopes to be married with a family but has not acceded to retiring those graceful and skilled legs. Her body craves dancing which inspires her to continue. Dazzle extends well wishes to Darcel and look forward to seeing her perform in The Lion King.

Sneaky Secrets To keep your nail colour looking fresh all the time!

Stop Streaks! Pastels and other white-based shades tend to apply unevenly. Before you apply your base coat, wipe nails with a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover to remove excess oil, which could clump your polish.

Add Shine! Metallics like silver and bronze look party ready but they lose their shine easily. To get that great colour back in a micro second, quickly use a cotton t-shirt or microfiber cloth to buff your polish. Viola!

Avoid Chips! Mattes tend to chip easily. For long lasting color, apply three coats instead of two then hold the brush vertically and sweep the side of it across the top edge of your nails with a thin fresh coat, from left to right.

Don’t Get All Tied Up! Choose The Best Necktie Colour For You

3.BlackA very formal colour, black is associated with fancy events, hence the term ‘black-tie’ affair. When worn more casually, in the work place for instance, black is classic and sends the message that you are sharp and efficient.

4.GreenThis colour has long been associated with money, particularly in the United States. It has other positive associations like growth, whether that is growing your wealth or knowledge. Green is also the color of being eco-friendly. Keep in mind that bright green however could read as being ‘green with envy’.

5.YellowFormerly, this colour has been associated with weakness but that has since changed. When paired with a blue shirt, yellow ties say that you are bright as the sun, out going and a go-getter who will get the job done. Wearing this color can definitely serve as a confidence booster.

Many corporate men like to wear ties to complete their daily business look. The majority however, may not be aware that

different colours send different messages about their personality. Dazzle looks at what message different colours send to your colleagues, how you can choose the colour to help you feel your best and match each situation.

1.RedThis bold colour suggests confidence, power and strength. A red tie is an excellent choice for stepping into a situation when you need to be on top of your game. Keep in mind that this colour may also suggest which political party you support. In Saint Lucia it is the Labour Party and in the United Stats, the Republican Party.

2.BlueWhether baby, navy or royal, blue is great for sending out a cool, calm and collected vibe. This colour can be particularly empowering when going into a high-pressure meeting and you need to remain confident and unfazed.

It is amazing when you meet someone with a gift who has remained humble, despite all of their successes and triumphs. What is rare is being gifted with the ability to bellow captivating notes as well as being an accomplished keyboardist and percussionist. Getting up on a stage and performing in front of hundreds, even thousands sounds scary, but for Teddyson John, it is simply what he loves to do. If we were present for the first moments after his birth, no doubt his cry must have been like hallowed angels singing. After interviewing him, Dazzle is under the impression that he is a born musician and we share more about the man behind the voice, the art and the creativity.

Teddyson John known as Teddy or TJ to his friends and family, has been wowing audiences since, “before his feet could even touch the

peddles of the drum set”. Teddyson admits that neither his mother nor father is musically inclined yet he and his two brothers, “seemed to have gotten it from somewhere”. His brothers, Francis John is the founder of the band, Blue Mango and Hervin John has his own band on the cruise ship line, Royal Caribbean.

Teddyson’s first recording was a song called ‘Sweeter’. We know you’re thinking ‘it must have been a soca’, but believe it or not, it is a gospel song as Teddyson actually started off singing and performing in church. This song was recorded at the legendary Den Studio. We often hear people talk about their first love, Teddyson admits that he simply “just had a love for music” and it has only deepened over the years.

He tells us: “I did a gospel concert in the Boulevard. I was really young. The drummer didn’t show up but I knew the songs and I used to drum on NIDO tins and bottles at the back of our house so I was able to fill in for the drummer. I remember after the performance Ricardo Francois gave me my first pair of drumsticks.” Teddy shared this fond musical memory and his exuberance when relaying the story made us relive it with him.

We know Teddyson is no stranger to the stage! His performing experience however stems from his school days when he attended Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School, participating in events such as Mr. & Ms. Teen Talent and Mr. & Ms. Valentine. It is those early performances that paved the way for him to shine bright at the Groovy Soca Monarch and Power Soca Monarch competitions leading him to have won the crown twice of the four times he has entered since 2007.

“It’s an amazing feeling for me being on stage; when you love what you do, it shows. I love to give the people a good show. I love to see people enjoying

themselves to what I do!” Teddyson said of his passion. The cliché, ‘practice makes perfect’ is essential for anyone in the music business but in Teddyson’s words, “the more you do it, the better you get at it.”

It is also often said that behind every successful man is a good woman, and Teddyson attributes his success to “an understanding and amazing wife!”

“She understands everything I do, she knows what it takes. She too is a performer as a dancer. When you meet somebody in their passion, you don’t try to change it but you support it. Having a strong relationship and the other person understands makes the perfect balance”. He explained.

There are two sides to Teddyson, a Soca side and a Jazz side. This diversity has allowed him to perform all over the world, including Miami, New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, Barbados, Martinique, Cayenne, Paris and of course his home, Saint Lucia. Teddyson has also performed with world famous artiste Patti LaBelle and the likes of James Ingram, Bebe Winans, and Brick & Lace. He has also been afforded the opportunity to open for Destra and Machel Montano.

While he has worked with these renowned artistes, his collaboration dreams keep growing. “Locally I would love to work with Ricky T. and in the Soca world Kes and Machel.” Teddyson however has always admired R. Kelly and still does today. What he admires most is R. Kelly’s creativity, musical diversity and writing skills. “My ultimate collaboration would be with R. Kelly.” He added.

For songwriting, he would have wanted to work with the late Michael Jackson and have Ne-Yo and The Dream write him a tune.

Teddyson’s achievements are not limited to winning local music titles. He is the only artist from the Caribbean to audition for the show ‘Making the Band’ hosted by P. Diddy, in 2010, in Los Angeles. He auditioned for the role of drummer and was able to make it through the first six rounds. “It was a nice experience. I was at Centre Stage, which is where lots of artists come to rehearse. I was in the room where

Page 32: Dazzle Magazine Issue 2

Michael Jackson, two weeks before his death had rehearsed for the movie ‘This is It’.” Teddyson recalled.

Dazzle Magazine would like to thank Teddyson for sharing his journey with us. Teddyson opened up for Ne-Yo at the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival in 2010 and we distinctly remember hearing thousands screaming for him for an encore, which is commonplace at his performances. Dazzle cannot wait to see what he 8performances are always spectacular! Already, he has fun facts

the TJ Project, which is made up of a cast of “carefully selected musicians: Dean (bass and musical director), Peppy and Eric (keyboardists), Zack (guitarist) and Gregory (drums).” Teddyson John is definitely on his way to making history and we have hopes that every Saint Lucian supports him.
