2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Renewal, One Life at a Time.

Page 2: DaySpring Villa 2014 Annual Report

DaySpring Villa is Oklahoma’s first faith-based,

certified shelter for women and their children whose

lives have been impacted by domestic violence,

sexual assault, stalking or human sex trafficking.

We offer a unique approach to restore, rebuild, and

renew lives by integrating goals-based programs

with spiritual guidance and the time each individual

needs to heal. Since 1995, DaySpring Villa has

transformed the lives of more than 6,700 women

and children in crisis.

As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization,

DaySpring Villa receives no financial support from

the government or The United Way. Our ability to

provide protective shelter, basic needs and life-

changing services relies on the financial generosity

of caring individuals, companies, foundations, and

churches of every denomination.

Renewing a damaged life is akin to planting tiny seeds of hope in fresh, fertile soil.

When physical, emotional and spiritual wounds are tended to with the elements of acceptance, compassion and unconditional love, only then can the seeds take root. With regular care, life springs free.

For women who’ve endured a lifetime of abuse and pain, who’ve battled forces that replaced their self-esteem with self-loathing, DaySpring Villa provides the opportunity for renewal. A safe, protective environment where no one can harm them. Basic human needs that feed the heart, mind and soul. Caring arms and goals-planning to chart their growth and transformation. Spiritual guidance to support their life’s new path.

For every woman whose life has been broken by violence, who questions her very purpose for breathing, DaySpring Villa is here to guide her, educate her, then celebrate her as she blossoms into the woman she was always meant to be.

In retrospect, the year 2014 for DaySpring Villa can be summed up in one word: Change.

Like every organization, DaySpring Villa experienced its share of ups and downs—some of them predictable, others not. Staff and guests alike found themselves scurrying around the obstacles that accompany building construction, learning new paths to get where they needed to be, and bumping into the unexpected on occasion.

We lost our beloved volunteer champion and prayer warrior Evelyn Cline in October, whose earthly presence is sorely missed in our halls but forever etched in our hearts and minds.

We saw heartbreak in the eyes of new guests upon their arrival to DaySpring Villa. Felt disappointment when some left too soon.

But witnessed beautiful triumphs when a woman and her children, no longer

victims of fear, announced they were ready to live independently.

Change, I remind myself, may be never ending in purpose but so

are we. With thanks to all who support our mission to transform the lives of women and children in crisis, DaySpring Villa can

remain as resilient to the changes that come our way as a mighty oak against the wind.

The Year in ReviewDaySpring Villa in 2014 admitted 114 women who brought with them 69

children for a total of 183 guests. The average guest

stay was 111 days, an increase from 104 days in 2013. After two years of accepting adult human sex trafficking victims, we’ve learned that these women do not tend to stay as long as domestic violence survivors. We are nonetheless committed

to demonstrating that help is here and change is possible.

For the sixth consecutive year, DSV shattered all previous records for number of phone calls seeking assistance with 2,523 callers. This translates to an average of 7 calls every day and illustrates a growing trend by women in our communities reaching out for help.

DaySpring Villa conducts performance audits throughout the year to evaluate our ability to provide essential services for our guests, and to identify areas in which our guests are underserved. These areas continue to include:

• Medical and dental services for those who don’t qualify for Medicaid

• Legal services for guests in divorce, child custody or other situations

• More community case management for elderly victims

• More immediate housing for all domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human sex trafficking victims due to peak capacities at DSV and other shelters much of the time.

While the need for these services and housing remains great, we are pleased to

report that during 2014, Dr. Jason Lee, a Tulsa internist, continued to donate time every month with an onsite clinic to aid our guests and their children. We are blessed to have volunteer optometrist Dr. Denise Roddy of Advanced Eye Care perform two free eye exams each month. Should a guest require eye glasses, a faithful DSV supporter purchases their eye glasses. We also wish to thank Broadway Baptist Church Women’s Group for helping one of our guests in 2014 with a much needed set of dentures.

Milestones and AchievementsAs a not-for-profit organization that receives no government or United Way funding, DaySpring Villa is truly grateful for every goal we achieve. In 2014, we kicked-off and continued initiatives that not only allow us to respond to women and children in crisis but architect the future of our shelter, services, and quality of life in our communities. Here’s a snapshot of how your financial gifts and donations of time are resulting in positive changes for everyone:

• Updating our five-year plan, which prepares us to address trends related

to domestic violence, human sex trafficking, sexual assault and stalking.

• Upgrading and expanding our facility to reduce energy costs, protect our guests and staff from severe weather events, and refurbishing our east wing to accommodate the growing number of trafficking victims.

• Increasing our volunteer base from 1,307 in 2013 to 1,783 in 2014.

• Expanding our donor base to more than 7,000 businesses and developing an online communications strategy to reach more demographics with regular news and information.

• Enhancing our development programs, such as our Church Advisory Board, to increase monthly financial support and critical donations of everyday needs, such as diapers, toilet paper and laundry detergent.

• Enriching our children’s program with education and family friendly activities, such as picnics, pizza parties and sporting events.

• Completing 24 hours of in-service training to build upon our staff’s abilities to work with our guests.

• Speaking to 82 civic groups, businesses, churches and women’s ministries across the state; hosting 84 tours of our facility; and serving on the Oklahoma Human Trafficking Task Force.

• Transporting guests to 1,370 appointments, including jobs, doctor appointments and court dates.

• Achieving a record-breaking $55,376.44 at our 2014 Annual Royal Feast fundraiser.

• Contracting with a trauma therapist to provide weekly counseling for our human sex trafficking guests.

As we look ahead, DaySpring Villa in 2015 will celebrate 35 years of service to communities across the state. Another year of change is almost certain to greet us. With your continued support of our mission, we are prepared as the mighty oak to weather any storm.

On behalf of the guests of DaySpring Villa, thank you for your generous support throughout 2014.

Kimber arrived at DaySpring Villa in February—angry, suspicious, and reeling from the physical trauma inflicted by her trafficker.

At age 22, Kimber is street-wise but easily intimidated by strong personalities. She grew up in a world of prostitution where her mother regularly sold herself to pay the rent and utilities, so it’s not surprising that Kimber has trouble understanding why her food and accommodations are free here. She has never been given anything that didn’t come with a price tag. She is fragile but determined.

“When I was ready to leave the life I had, DaySpring Villa was ready for me,” Kimber says. “Nobody knows where I am now. I can go for a walk and not worry that anyone will find me.”

Here, far away from the life she’s known since birth, Kimber is starting anew. For the first time, she experiences healthy routines, her own bed, regular meals, and unconditional love. She balances her fear of discovery by her captor with a new sense of self-discovery and a dream to one day live out of the shadows. The road ahead of her will be long.

“I know that nobody can change me, but me,” Kimber says. “I’m learning how to do that every day.”

Elise found the stability she craved in the Army, but after completing her duty and facing a life without the framework of military routine, she crumbled.

Unable to settle down or make sense of her role as a civilian, Elise struggled to hold down a job, pay her bills and even make friends. Without a car, she relied on the bus to take her across town to see her sister, who listened to Elise question her purpose out of uniform. As her jaunts on the bus turned regular, so did the faces that accompanied her.

One day Elise exchanged a polite smile with a man she’d seen several times before, hoping to break his stare on her. “That’s when he started to stalk me,” Elise says. “Everywhere I went he followed me. Then he turned violent.”

On occasions when Elise walked alone, the man would surprise her, grabbing her by the throat and choking her until she managed to escape. Frustrated by a system that couldn’t help her, Elise turned to DaySpring Villa.

After four months, Elise’s fear and anger have turned to calm. She’s taken a full-time job and saving money to rent her own home. Spiritually reborn, Elise is also discovering her purpose one day at a time. “I am a different person now,” Elise says. “DaySpring Villa has not only enriched my life but given me a constant reminder that I am loved.”

Change Takes Root: Elise

“That’s when he started to stalk me. Everywhere I went he followed me. Then he turned violent.”

“I would say that I came in a battered, wounded, scared bird but I’ve discovered that my wounds have made me the strong woman I am today,” Natalie says.

Nine months after she broke free of her traffickers, Natalie stands in stark contrast to the angry 34-year-old who arrived at DaySpring Villa. She laughs a lot now, smiles even more, and her face lights with pride when she describes herself as a college student.

Not so long ago, Natalie lived on the streets where she was regularly sold, beaten and bitten. Raised in a violent family setting, no one paid much attention to Natalie. When she left home, she says, no one even looked for her. No one missed her presence.

At DaySpring Villa, Natalie has bloomed. She accepted Christ as her Savior, enrolled in school, and is working through the trauma that threatened to dead-end her life. She believes in miracles and the power of hugs.

“I truly am a different person,” Natalie says. “I’ve allowed people to get to know the real me. I’ve set goals for my future and I believe in myself. But most of all, I know I am loved.”

Gardens are not created or made. They unfold. We nurture them with the essentials for new life—sunlight, rain, oxygen. We shelter them and protect them at their most fragile state. Then, we watch as they reveal their hidden beauty.

At DaySpring Villa, we provide a secure and learning environment for women and their children who have left or escaped a secret world of chaos and human destruction. Here, they are greeted with kindness, understanding and unconditional acceptance. Here, they discover peace and, over time, peace of mind.

DaySpring Villa integrates goals-based programs with spiritual guidance to cultivate lives with renewed purpose. We nurture our guests with the tools to live independently and self-sufficiently. We teach the skillsets to make positive decisions and introduce the love and eternal guidance of Jesus Christ. We give battered and trafficked women the time to heal and opportunity to start renewed.

The Trowel, the Fork and the Watering CanThroughout the year, DaySpring Villa relies on the selflessness of individuals and groups who volunteer their time, skills and talents to help us help others grow and thrive.

In 2014, a total of 1,783 volunteers donated 27,572 hours to DaySpring Villa, compared with 1,307 volunteers in 2013 who donated 36,554 hours. While the number of volunteers in 2014 increased, the amount of time they volunteered decreased from the previous year. This year’s volunteer hours represented $199,897 in service value, even at minimum wage.

Those who volunteer at DaySpring Villa are vital implements for our organization, whether they are a doctor who provides medical assistance onsite, Girl Scouts who plant flowers to beautify our facility, or a senior who can make soup out of leftovers. We are grateful for their gifts and appreciate the invaluable service they dedicate to us every day.

“I have a heart for this ministry and for women who are hurting and in need.”

Dr. Jason Lee, D.O.

What an amazing staff we have at DaySpring Villa to replenish, restore and renew the lives of so many women and children every day. These are the faces of those who choose to put the needs of others ahead of their own. They are both special and critical to our mission to transform the lives of women and children in crisis.

Our world would be dramatically different without those who choose to work on behalf of others. Thank you for allowing us to serve that purpose.
