With a multimillion-dollar closing gift from the Feldberg family,
the Center for the Arts is now doing final fundraising to support
fitting out and equipping the interior spaces of the new facility.
Upon completion, the contemporary arts facility of 28,000 square feet
will include a new theater, new outdoor stage, four art studios, four
performance studios, new visual arts gallery, a bar and kitchens for
culinary programs. Ed Schmidt, Board President, explained, “The new
building will provide a venue where everything can be under one roof,
a home where dance practices, sushi classes, film screenings and
pottery classes can happen simultaneously. Arts interaction and
discussions between multiple disciplines will expand creative thinking
and exposure.”
With construction funding secure, the Center is now focused on
raising the $2 million needed to equip and fit out the new building.
Fit out is the process of making the interior spaces suitable for
occupancy, and includes things such as acoustical curtains, sound
systems in the studios, LED lighting, digital control systems and more.
“We are over 90% of the way to successfully completing our campaign
and securing the future of the arts in Crested Butte. Please give today
to help us reach our goal,” urged Jenny Birnie, Executive Director. To
make a tax-deductible donation and to see a 3D animation of the new
facility visit BuildingintheheARTs.org.

market snapshot
Prices and sales have been steady this year compared to previous periods. The average selling price per square foot continues
to rise, with the Town of Crested Butte peaking at $580/ square foot. Even if this sounds high locally, our prices are half of our
neighbors in Aspen and Telluride.
Our inventory of homes continues to be absorbed, with a diminishing three-month supply of condos on the resort mountain and
a four-month supply in CB South. Land is selling well also, with 107 sales through the third quarter of 2018, representing a 40%
increase over the previous year.
Vail Resorts recently completed the purchase of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. This big news brings a world class level
of expertise and service to our ski area. And from a real estate perspective, it likely translates to increased confidence and
investment in our unique mountain valley, as has been the case for other resorts where Vail has invested.
A healthy selling volume of $52 million is pending for closing at the time of publication, and Bluebird represents nearly a quarter
of the total for the north end of the valley. As the fastest growing brokerage in the region, Bluebird is driven by exceptional
marketing and successful results for our clients with the most productive associates in the market.

Little did they know or expect that Jackson’s Honest products would end
up in grocery stores around the country!
When Jackson Reamer was two years old, his parents, Scott and Megan
began to observe differences in his disposition and digestion that began
to affect his motor skills. After much research and many challenging
trials, they found that a diet of unprocessed foods and good fats greatly
reduced inflammation and transformed Jackson’s quality of life. Since
they were making everything at home from scratch, they inadvertently
created their first product: a simple chip made with only the following
three ingredients: potatoes, sea salt and organic coconut oil.
grassrootsAs friends and neighbors tasted the chips, they loved them so much that
they requested more- to the point that, with the community’s support,
the Reamers began to produce them by hand for sale locally. This
grassroots effort was supported by farming friends in Paonia providing
potatoes, local caterers lending their shop after hours for cooking and a
spot at the four way stop in town to sell their chips.
Megan says that people feel good eating their products. They get to
enjoy something they don’t want to give up or feel guilty about eating.
Consumers are keenly aware of ingredients and are more mindful about
what they put in their bodies. Despite the out of touch institutions who
define the food pyramid, today’s consumers have easy access to product
data, health information and reviews. Smarter choices are ever more
accessible. If you can enjoy snacks with simple, clean ingredients that
taste great without unhealthy consequences, the choice seems simple.
Jackson’s Honest chips are cooked at low heat for longer periods,
keeping the vegetable closer to its natural state. Oftentimes when
people open a bag, they ask “What is that smell?” A refreshing twist,
they aren’t used to being able to smell the actual potato!
Scott, with a financial background, was still working full time in his
career. With the local popularity of the product, he began researching,
forecasting and modeling in the CPG (consumer packaged goods) space.
He examined supply chains and commodity sources and discovered that
“This might be a great business.”
They increased production by outsourcing packaging and distribution and
evolved into a career in the salty snack industry with a national product.
After five years of success and continued growth in the business, they
were at a crossroads. Inbound demand was at a point where they would
need to scale their offering with investment partners to fill more shelves
in retail stores.
story by bud bush
t’s nice to know there are snack foods out there that we can
enjoy without feeling guilty about the ingredients. As necessity
is the mother of invention, the Reamer family from Crested
Butte has a heartfelt story about creating delicious and healthy
snacks as part of a “good fat” diet to support their son’s rare
autoimmune disorder.
17

shark tankThis snack food business was gaining a life of its own, far beyond the
imaginations of Megan and Scott Reamer. From digging deep to find
healthy solutions for their ailing son, Jackson, to shifting careers to
deliver great tasting healthy chips across the country, the Reamers were
more or less along for a ride that was delivering amazing results, not
only for their son, but for their growing customer base.
From a Denver news story about the advent and inspiration for Jackson’s
Honest, the Reamers were approached about pitching their product to
the cast of ABC’s Shark Tank, a dynamic reality program about zillionaire
investors who compete and bid to back entrepreneurs with promising
business ventures. The “Sharks” are known for their outspoken
criticisms of the less favorable pitches, hence the name.
Scott and Megan, an easygoing couple from a small Colorado
mountain town, weren’t too inspired to jump into the big media “shark
tank” at first. But, they decided to submit the requested videos and
questionnaires and one day received a call that they had made the final
cut and would be flown to California to pitch to the Sharks on TV!
Not really having any expectations or knowing much about the Sharks,
they made their honest pitch and shared their story about the beginning
of the journey with Jackson’s disease. The cast showed serious
interest, and a guest Shark who was making his debut on the show won
the bid. Rohan Oza happened to be the perfect fit, having led Coca Cola’s
marketing team, and building the Vitaminwater and Smartwater brands
in the CPG world.
The business partnership with Rohan proved very successful. Besides
capital for expansion, he shared his deep industry contacts and
internal resources for brand strategy and marketing through things like
ecommerce and advertising. As a popular public persona, he appeared
on The Dr. Oz Show and Good Morning America promoting Jackson’s
Honest. It must have been fate that Rohan’s first shark deal in his first
appearance on the show landed with Scott and Megan.
running with the big boysJackson’s Honest expanded from a regional potato chip company in to a
national healthy salty snack business with a diverse range of products
including tortilla chips and grain free puffs in many distinct flavors. The
Reamers always thought that if they could see a bag of their chips in a
Whole Foods Market, they would “drop the mic” with the satisfaction of
success. Well, their dream came true and they are now competing for
shelf space with the world’s best-known salty snack vendors.
Megan’s role in the company as CEO puts her at an intersection for all
parts of the business: marketing, operations, finance and sales. She
says that the smaller companies have an advantage of being in touch
with their customers more closely through direct communications and
social media. Scott’s role as CFO allows him to focus primarily on
operations, forecasting, budgeting and investor relations. They produce
their products on the West Coast and in the Midwest with plans to add
an East Coast manufacturer in the near future.
Their market niche presents a barrier of entry for larger competitors.
Coconut oil ships solid in small quantities, rather than in liquid form
on tanker trucks. But, it seems like with the popularity of these snacks
and the movement toward more health-conscious choices, the big boys
would be taking note and making adaptations.
The Reamers commented that it would be more cost effective for a large
operator to absorb a smaller brand to expand their product line rather
than create a new product line. New ventures require vast amounts
of research and development which equates to time and money. They
add that these bigger competitors have been observing the progress of
Jackson’s Honest and making introductions.
18
i s s u e 2 | b b r e 1 . c o m
Even expert neurologists and the National Institute of Health confirmed
and validated the Reamers’ approach to good fats, low carbohydrates and
natural whole foods.
Today, the Jackson’s Honest Charitable Foundation supports children’s
organizations and funds research for rare and orphan diseases. These
organizations do not get a lot of attention, and they need support because
they don’t affect large populations.
Sometimes out of tragedy, blossoms a wonderful message for the benefit
of future generations. This is the legacy of Jackson Reamer.
legacy
Not long after the taping of Shark Tank, Jackson Reamer, sixteen,
died suddenly and unexpectedly from complications arising from an
experimental medication being used to treat his autoimmune disease.
Scott and Megan, along with their three surviving children, endure the
pain of loss, but at the same time are passionate about living the legacy
of their inspiring son through the healthy dietary discoveries that they
made and the thriving Jackson’s Honest brand that they founded on his
behalf. They shared a life with him far beyond the medical expectations
that his condition presented.
Jackson was one of only seven people in the world with this rare
disorder. Through this profound experience, the Reamers’ realize that
their story relates not only to people suffering from inflammatory
symptoms, but to everyone who eats! They urge everyone to “Read the
labels of food products. Be aware of what goes in your body. So much
of our good health can be controlled with clean and simple ingredients.”
“There are healthy alternatives to high fructose corn syrup: organic cane
sugar, honey and maple syrup,“Megan remarked. The boutique “craft”
brands like Jackson’s Honest are in touch with the forward movement of
healthful eating and quality of life.

can enjoy the convenience of living in town with the views, privacy and quiet of a mountain home. Only 20 homesites still available.
