days 3-6 in germany, three holidays and one horrific testimony

Dear family, friends of refugees, and other prayer partners, Dateline Germany, July 30-August 2, 2017 We are officially in “No Man’s Land”—some two hours’ drive outside of Berlin, traveling by charter bus to some remote rural refugee camp. With “no wi-fi” in the camp we are going, this will be the last you will hear from me for four days. And with no pictures yet taken from on site, this text-heavy blog will have to do. But I will keep it brief with enough points to help you picture us doing all this. Ø Once in camp, 20 of us embed or “camp in” with a couple dozen refugee kids. Ø We will be serving meals for fifty, morning, noon & night. Ø We will play various sports, arts & crafts and other fun & games around a camp schedule built for teens. Ø We will engage in English conversations throughout the day, conduct community worship services at night, and otherwise do life with them 24/7. Sue leads the decorations sub-team. Meaning, she is doing most of this work herself, putting up and taking down each day the decorations that the team—and many of you women at HPC, thanks!—contributed. This décor will highlight key aspects of three traditional American holidays and seasons around which this intense 3-day summer camp is organized-- Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. So picture Sue on her tippy toes, hanging harvest and pilgrim theme pictures one day, garlands and Christmas stockings the next, and Easter paraphernalia (candy, eggs, bunnies) on the third day. Of course, we know what really happens “on the third day.” The preaching is appropriately themed and served up, preferably as hot as our seasonal food will be—brought by our specialized cooking team . Ø one meal and message on Thanksgiving & gratitude, emphasizing that all good gifts come from the Lord; Ø one meal and message on Easter, comparing Abraham’s sacrifice, whom our cousins in the faith revere, to that of Christ—who is the one last and only lasting sacrificial Lamb that takes away the sins of the world. Ø And sandwiched in between, there’s a meal and message on Christmas. On a snowless, hot & sweaty Tuesday night in August that would be yours truly bringing the timeless message of Christmas. Ø Pray that I will keep the message deliberately and mercifully short (for me), as I speak through a translator. Ø Pray the Word who became one of us (John 1:1-14) comes alive through me and dwells again in our midst, even through an Arabic translation (which requires a sentence or two to explain some English words). . Ø Please pray with me that each of the evening servers and speakers will “bring it,” meaning their “A game,” and “I am Second” and the Lord is first, and the kids benefit, each as the Lord intends. The most interesting piece to share with you just now, as I close and catch breakfast, the team meeting and team bus, is not what I have to say, but what my translator has to say, even before I speak. Last night I had a very lively dinner with my young translator. His horrific conversion story is very hard to picture and stomach, so put down whatever you are eating or drinking, as you try to picture this. I must leave his name and face out of it, for obvious reasons: Egyptian born and bred, he graduates from college as an architect, goes to work in Saudi Arabia where he gets indoctrinated into true Islam, that is, radical Wahhabism under Sharia law. There he has to witness hands being cut off for stealing, honor killings for disloyalty, even a nanny get beheaded for an accidental death to a Saudi child left in her charge. Witnessing those horrific acts has the net effect of causing him to lose his faith, and almost his life. His Saudi brothers entertain his doubts and questions to a degree, but tell him that if he ever left the faith, they’d have to kill him. He escapes to Qatar where he finally gives up the faith he was raised in. But without that identity, he becomes so depressed he tries suicide, twice. A Christian counselor restores him to mental stability. By this time, after a year, his friends are mostly Christian and demonstrate their love and sharing their inner peace with him. Some 18 months ago, at age 26, he decides to follow Jesus, but has not come out to his family in Egypt. They would disown him if they knew, and their neighbors would seek him out and kill him. He shall remain anonymous to you, but known to the Lord. I am blessed to know him and disciple him this week. Last night’s integration into the team with other e3 Partners was remarkable to me, even though I was on such a trip last year, this is Sue’s first such mission. The team God has assembled from all over North America is so much more talented and mission-minded than what I remember from previous mission trips, here and elsewhere. Continue to pray that we do integrate well, that as we become true servant leaders and camp counselors for the next three days. God’s love & true peace to you all, Diet & Sue
