A WORD FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR A FEW SMALL THINGS

Our Tabernacle

Several weeks ago, the temporary tabernacle that had been placed in the area behind the altar for Sunday use became quite unsafe. The fishing line that had secured it to the back wall had actually fallen apart. The pedestal that held up the tabernacle was really unstable. The combination of the lack of the stability of the pedestal and the breaking down of the system to stabilize it led to the decision to remove it for safety’s sake. There are two principle Church documents that govern the Liturgy. The first is the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy issued by Vatican II. This document expresses the theology and principles of the Liturgy. The second one is The General Instruction on The Roman Missal. This one contains the practical and practice of the Liturgy, or a “How To Do It” document. In paragraphs 314 and 315 it says, “The tabernacle should usually be the only one…” It should not be on the altar where Mass is celebrated. “Consequently, it is preferable that the tabernacle be located according to the judgement of the Diocesan bishop, a.) in the sanctuary apart from the altar of celebration…or b.) even in some chapel suitable for the private adoration and prayer of the faithful and organically connected to the church and readily noticeable by the people.” Since the present location of the tabernacle complies with the governing document, I will leave it where it is in the chapel. The new pastor in consultation with you, the parishioners, will decide if it should be moved.

Bells at Mass The General Instruction on the Roman Missal (150) also allows for the ringing of a “a small bell” at “each elevation by the Priest”. What has been done of late goes considerably beyond what the GIRM allows. Since it was custom in times past for the use of one tap of our gong, I think it the more appropriate action. A word about the history of bells at Mass. In days of old when knights were bold, and big cathedrals were built, it was discovered that since the closest the faithful were permitted to the altar did not allow them to hear the words of the priest facing away from them, they could not know what part of the Mass was happening at any given time.. Since it was thought to be important that the faithful should know and be prepared to stand, kneel or come forward for communion, some form of communication was needed. Some bright cleric came up with the idea of using bells rung at certain times and with varying vigor to signal the faithful what part of the Mass was taking place. As it was practice to copy in the local parish what happened in the Cathedral, the bells came to the parish church. With the advent of Mass in English and adequate sound systems as well as the priest facing the people, the bells were no longer necessary. In many parishes there are no bells used during Mass. In others the custom continues in various forms. There is one other point that some may raise. Isn’t the Institution/Consecration the climax of the Mass or the time when Jesus “comes down”? Well, no. Actually, communion is the climax of the Eucharist. The Consecration and Communion are related like Christmas and Easter. We often make a much bigger deal out of Christmas when in reality the greater event by far is the Paschal Mystery, Easter. Christmas or really the Incarnation was a necessary preparation for the great gift, sacrifice, and won-der of Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection. So with the Eucharist, in order for the Body of Christ ,us, to receive the Body of Christ and so enter into “Communion” with the Christ, there must be an “Incarnation”, the Consecration. The point and purpose of Eucharist is Oneness with the Saviour. Pope Saint John Paul II in an address to the French bishops spoke of the many presences of Christ in the Eucharist. He noted as Jesus says in Matthew 18:20. “Where two or more are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst.” So that Christ is recognized to be present in the Assembly, the people gathered for Mass. The Gospel of John begins by reminding us that Jesus is the “Word of God” that became flesh, and when the Word of God is proclaimed, Christ is made present. So it is when the Lector proclaims the First Reading, Christ is made present in the speaking of the Word of God. Christ is also present in the person of the priest at several points during the Mass. Finally, and, of course, to our eyes, most wonderfully, Christ is present in the consecrated bread and wine, his Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

Nuestro tabernáculo

Hace varias semanas, el tabernáculo temporal que se había colocado en el área detrás del altar para el uso del domingo se volvió bastante inseguro. La línea de pesca que la había asegurado a la pared posterior se había derrumbado. El pedestal que sostenía el tabernáculo era realmente inestable. La combinación de la falta de estabilidad del pedestal y la descomposición del sistema para estabilizarlo llevó a la decisión de retirarlo por razones de seguridad. He longed to cross the boundary between heaven and earth, Without controversy, without fear, To offer His Gifts, His Joy, His challenge, His Sacrifice, His Love. He came without reservation ,To seek a home among the hu-man race. He came because Heaven sent Him , And earth, through a woman, invited Him. Yet convention, tradition could have, Prevented His welcome into a family, Were it not for the intervention of, An angel in a dream, Even while in the womb He was forced to travel , With mother and father, To a place where the only welcome, Was into a dirty stable where animals fed. Born in poverty, he again was forced, To flee to another country, Victim of an oppressive government, Fearful of what He might become, A perceived threat to those in power , And other parents suffered and children died, Because of the fear of a Child, among many children, born of Love. Reaching adulthood, he traveled as well, Welcomed by some, rejected by oth-ers, Even His hometown people, Could not accept a mi-grant preacher, Who preached freedom for all, Invitation to all, without border or boundary. To have full citizenship in God’s kingdom. In His travels, He welcomed fellow travelers, Inviting them to leave their homes, To migrate with Him to sow the fields, Of the human heart with hope and promise. With His companions, He mended many, A broken spirit and body, planting seeds, Of new possibilities, new life in, Soil that seemed dry and barren. In His travels, He shared many a meal, With those who had lost their way, And, in His waiting on them, Nourished their bodies with the fruit of the land and their souls with the sustenance of forgiveness and new life, And a formal invitation to join In the journey to the Promised Land. In His travels, He preached the Gospel of the migrant, the Bedouin. The one who knows that life is Nothing but a journey; The Gospel of blessedness, For those who hun-ger, mourn, Offer mercy, seek peace, approach life hum-bly, brush off, The pain of rejection for doing what’s right. He is clear about the destination and what, Getting there requires: To provide for any, Migrant who crosses the borders of our consciousness: Welcome, Shelter, Clothing, Food, Drink, Security, Respect, Companionship, Forgiveness, Encouragement. Even in His final hours, He offered His Body, His Blood His Sweat, His Tears, for others. In the end/beginning, He came. Like all migrants, to a crossroads, A choice between life for Him and His Family, Or death of the spirit of all He cared about. And so He chose Life, the travail of, Journeying on behalf of His Family, to an unfamiliar, unwelcoming place, To offer His gifts, His talents, His toil, His passion, His heart, His Spirit, His life, in order to find a permanent home in our hearts. Will you allow the Child/Christ to cross the borders of your fears, doubts, prejudices to find a place to be born? Will you welcome the Mother and Father, and countless migrant Mothers and Fathers, who bear His image within them, Seeking to travel the road of Promise? Will you welcome Him?

The Music Ministry at St. Colette needs new cantors and Adult Choir members. We are a friendly and supportive group and ask you to consider joining us. Our mission is to enhance the liturgy and bring about a fuller participation of the assembly. Cantors welcome the assembly to Mass, announce the hymns, and lead the singing during the Mass. Cantors should be able to read music and training is provided. Flexible scheduling is available as are rehearsals. The Adult Choir presents the music at the 10:30 am Sunday Mass and at special liturgies. All experience levels are welcome and the ability to read music is not necessary. The choir sings a varied repertoire and often sings in harmony. We rehearse on Thursday evenings in the church from 7:00 pm to 8:45 pm. Wednesday evening at 6:30pm we pray Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours for the health and well-being of our parish. Please join us, your fellow parishioners, for this brief, but powerful time of prayer.

Ministry of Care If you are sick or recovering from an operation, the Ministry of Care at St. Colette would like to bring communion to you. Please call the Parish House at (847) 394-8100 to make an appointment.

Holy Adoration is held the First Friday of each month at St. Colette Parish from 8:30am until 9:00pm.
