Editor’s NoteThis month’s gonna be great. Why? Because www.ePETSTER.com.my is already on-line! The ‘better’ version of our previous www.petsternetwork.com will be a great place to click on especially for our fellow pet lovers but guys, just beware of any unnecessary imitations, ok?

In just a glimpse of an eye, Pet World Malaysia 2009

is over. We enjoyed our moments during the exhibition, especially when we bumped into a few hot chicks with their hot dogs. It was good to see the lively crowd when we managed to get rid of 15,000 copies of our back issues. The grooming competition was nicely done by Pets Icon and something new this year - the creative dog fashion show! If you missed it, then too bad and make sure you’ll come next year.

As for the Petster Network Team, things are growing pretty fast. We are now planning to have our own shelter home (which will be known as Petster Shelter) for strays which are rescued by the public. NGOs like SPCA, PAWS and Furry Friends Farm are great but sometimes it’s better if we could offer a helping hand to save those poor animals! This shelter will be a self-funded service to the public and we’ll try our best to save the animals. For more information about volunteering opportunities, please visit www.epetster.com.my, alright? Lastly, many thanks to all readers and advertisers who’d fed us till we are a little fat this issue!

Bites & SnacksPets For Keeping A Successful One!Another charity event by animal-caring students.

Pets for Keeps Campaign is named so for a reason. Pets are to be treasured and to be kept by their owners for the rest of their lives. They need to be loved, and they need to spend time with their owners, hence the birth of this campaign. Held on the 12th of July 2009, a team of 10 students from SEGi College Subang Jaya came together to create a platform for pet owners and their pets to bond and keep up with each other’s feelings.

The team brought in sponsors from House of Groomers Academy, whereby they gave participants’ pets free basic grooming. Subang Jaya’s friendly vets, Dr.Siva and Dr. Dorothy offered to give free medical checkup to all pets who attended the event.

“Dr. Siva is very professional in his field. He is the first vet whom my dog isn’t afraid of” said Patricia, who owns a toy poodle. Apart from that, Royal Canin brought in their professional nutritionist to give free advice to those who need to know about what diet should be given to their pets to help them live a healthy lifestyle.

Merchandises such as pet food, pet shampoo and pet accessories sold on that day were given to PAWS, a voluntary society set up to help abandoned, abused and unwanted animals.

The campaign was indeed an accomplishment for this team, as pet owners being so proud of their pride and joy whenever a compliment is given. “I used to get irritated with my dog for some reasons, but I decided to bring it to this event due to the free grooming and provided.

When I arrived, Bobby received more compliments that it has ever got. Now I look at Bobo at a different point of view, “ said a participant who declined to be named. Pets for Keeps Campaign is affiliated with HomeApet.com, ePETSTER, Petster Magazine and Petaboom. The team is grateful for your presence, all the sponsors, and all those who participated on that day.

In the wee hours of a Saturday morning, six half-sleeping and zombie-like students of KDU College, P.J. gathered at the front gate of KDU College at 6:00am. (OK. WE LIED). Only three poor girls made it at 6.00am at the front gate and the rest came at around 6:30am. Nevertheless, we were all still hyped up to start our journey that will soon change our lives. Before driving to the Pulau Ketam Jetty, we decided to get some breakfast at a nearby “mamak” stall. At 7:15am, we left the breakfast place and literally flew in our car to the jetty. Jhoon Aun, our fellow driver, thought that he was driving in a Go-Kart car, only without a helmet.

At 7.00am, we safely reached Pulau Ketam Jetty at Klang. We met up with a few organizations such as ePETSTER, SPCA, and SAVE-A-STRAY. Other than us KDU students, there were also students from Inti College as well as some other volunteers. ePETSTER provided us with free T-Shirts and we immediately changed into those adorable T-Shirts. We left the jetty at approximately 8:45am in a pretty run-down ferry. The sea was not choppy and the ride was a good one. We managed to catch up on our sleep.

We reached Pulau Ketam at around 9:15am and went to a gathering place to listen to a short briefing by Jacinta who was from SPCA. Then, we were told to get our breakfast at a nearby office. After eating the dry noodles and the super sweet tea, we started our task of interviewing the villagers on their opinions about the strays. Jacinta gave us a few questions to ask and mentioned that she expected us to report back to her. We got to interview 4 groups of people and took some pictures with them as requested by Jacinta.

After all the interview sessions, we continued scouting the area for more people to talk to and we were also on the look-out for stray dogs. We were resting at a nearby shed when we spotted two dogs with their puppies beneath an unoccupied blue roofed house. The house was across the lake and we could not get to the dogs. We decided to take pictures of the house to bring it back to the gathering place to discuss about rescuing those dogs. We went out to the gathering place and met up with people from ePETSTER. Their response was really impressive. They immediately volunteered to go straight to the blue roofed house to save those dogs without a moment’s hesitation. We tried to find a way to the opposite side without having to use a boat to go over. Finally, we found the bridge that connects us to the other side of the lake. We saw a few stray dogs beneath the houses but we could not catch them because we

did not have the right equipments.

After a long walk under the hot sun, we finally reached the blue roofed house. It turned out to be a wood factory. We searched around for the dogs and puppies we saw and we found them hiding beneath the logs. William from ePETSTER immediately jumped down to help those puppies. We could not catch the mother of the puppies because she ran away and we could see that her skin had serious infections. All of us took at least one or two puppies into our arms and carried all twelve puppies back to the gathering place.

Once we reached the gathering place, we put the puppies into a cage and cleaned ourselves before having a pleasant discussion with the ePETSTER team at a nearby restaurant. After the lunch break, we decided to help ePETSTER move the puppies to land and to put the puppies up for adoption. Shayne from ePETSTER volunteered to foster the puppies temporarily at her home. We put the puppies into the back of our car and followed the ePETSTER team to Shayne’s home. Once we reached Shayne’s home, we immediately bathed the dogs and dried them. The puppies were finally clean for the first time in their lives and had a nice place to sleep in with sufficient water and food.

To wrap up the day, all of us had Domino’s Pizza! It was really a great way to end our awesome journey. We had a great time of laughter and fellowship with the ePETSTER team and got to know each other pretty well. All in all, what we did was not torturous at all but an unforgettable meaningful journey that will forever be in our hearts. Thank you ePETSTER for sharing with us your genuine love for animals!

Thanks to all pet lovers, these puppies were already adopted!

Bites & SnacksProKasih At Upcoming Dogathon!ProKasih, the abbreviation for ‘Projek Pengkasian Haiwan Terbiar’ or Stray Animal Neutering Project, is a project jointly organized by the student club (Veternak-Zoologico Club) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the Faculty members and UPM. Now at its fourth year, the aims of ProKasih are to achieve control of the population of stray animals and to raise awareness of the public about our collective responsibility for these neglected animals.

Fresh, entertaining, and fun! Dogathon, an annual dog event organized by students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), promises all. It is a fun-filled day with games and activities galore for both dog and owner, young and old, in the vast expanse of a serene park. Early August last year, Dogathon successfully set an amazing register in the Malaysia Book of Records to be The Biggest Gathering of Dogs with participation of more than 600 dogs and 1200 people. However, many may not know that the main reason behind this popular dog event is to raise funds for ProKasih.

Stray animals are considered a nuisance to society, but we forget that they exist as a result of our collective neglect as humans – we all need to take responsibility for our neglect of their needs, which are - to be accepted and integrated into our ecosystem, proper nutrition, freedom from disease and freedom from persecution. As the humans who are responsible for their domestication thousands of years ago, it is in our power to give them the one thing they cannot manage for themselves – birth control. Yes, their presence contributes to disease transmission to our pets, but they cannot help themselves nor can they help being in the poor state they are in. As responsible members of society, we must re-assume the role of protectors of these neglected beings who have for thousands of years given up life in the wild to be domesticated for the joy of human companionship for it has been said:

“If you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life”.

Yet, these animals who have sacrificed their original nature for humans have been forgotten by their domesticators. As was said so rightly by the fox in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s ‘The Little Prince’

“You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed”.

As responsible humans, we must bring meaning to the lives of these animals that we have tamed by returning their worth and acceptance in the eyes of society.

ProKasih promotes a ‘catch, neuter and release’ method, found internationally to be the most effective means of controlling a stray population. Beginning with the stray cat population within the campus of UPM, a census is taken of stray cats, they are then captured, neutered, and released to their original environment when their surgical sites are judged sufficiently healthy. Realising that the key to solving the stray problem lies in the mindset of the Malaysian public, ProKasih additionally channels its efforts into promoting public awareness of neutering, the plight of strays and responsible pet ownership. ProKasih is thus implemented in four concurrent phases - campaigning, surveys on the public’s perceptions on strays, stray animal enumeration, plus catch-

R20

Page 21: Day Out - Petster Magazine!

neuter-and-release.

A common concern among pet owners is that neutering will take a toll on their dog’s guarding skills, disposition and intelligence. Yes, neutering will change your animal’s disposition, but only for the better, socially speaking. Neutered dogs and cats have proven to be gentler and more attached to their owners. Since they have reduced interest in other dogs and cats, they will, therefore spend more quality time with their owners.

For the worry about losing guarding skills, neutering in fact increases a dog’s reliability and responsible nature. Neutered dogs are more easily trained as they have achieved hormonal stability. Finally, neutering definitely has no ill effects on an animal’s intelligence, whether cat or dog.

Neutering is a genuine means for all pet owners to express care about their pets’ health. The health benefits include reduced risk of reproductive diseases, mammary gland cancer, and elimination of frantic on-heat behaviour as well as prevention of wounds and fractures due to fighting and disregard for moving vehicles among males.

Your neighbors will thank you for significantly reduced disturbances like urine spraying, excessive vocalization and fighting especially during their sleep time!

ProKasih hopes to promote awareness to create quality living not only for animals but also for humankind, whose lives are undeniably intertwined with the lives of animals, one way or another. Such an ideal would be impossible if we do not each play our role and come together consciously to make it a reality.

Interested to know more about ProKasih? Feel free to visit http://www.vet.upm.edu.my/~dogathon for more information. For those of you with your very own canine friends at home, show your support for ProKasih by joining us for Dogathon 2009 on the 16th of August 2009 at Bukit Ekspo, UPM.

Probiotics (DFM) are added to increase digestibility and reduce digestive

stress. Proteinate minerals are very beneficial in breeding applications and

are absorbed into the blood stream by almost 100%. BLACKWOOD 2000 with its High Energy and added coat conditioners gives an unsurpassed edge in the show ring and the field. Breeders prefer this diet due to its

lactation/gestation capabilities and the increased number of pups per

litter. It’s prescribed as a large breed puppy diet. This is our most popular formula especially during the colder

months.

KUALA LUMPUR, [DATE] - The pet exhibition that was recently held at Mid Valley Exhibition Centre witnessed a booming number of pet lovers and hobbyists alike dropping by, some with their pets, to experience many different kinds of activities as one community.

“Ten cats were re-homed during the three days exhibition!” said Jacinta Johnson, Assistant Manager of Marketing Department.

“We hope that the next show will feature charity corner where charity organizations will be invited on complementary basis” quoted Dr. Sivagurunathan, Deputy Chairman of MNAWF.

For the first time in Malaysia, visitors were treated to numerous activities including the 2nd Dog Sports Competition, the 2nd Cat Beauty Competition and the 1st National Rabbit Show.

The most eye-catching event was The 1st Malaysia Creative & Styling Modeling Show, organized by Pets Icon Grooming Academy & Starwood Art of Dog Grooming School (Thailand). Models were dressed in stunning animal-themed outfits and gowns while their faces and bodies were fully painted as according to the theme of their dresses. Together with beautifully groomed dogs, they cat-walked on the main stage in rhythm with the music beat and created a ‘wow-factor’ sensation among the fully crowded audiences.

“It is obvious, despite the current slow economy, people are still willing to spend! They want to ensure that their pets will get the best food, the best cleaning products, the best cages and accessories as well as spending on hiring best groomer to beautify their pets. Pets are meant to be pampered and loved as it has always been for many centuries,” said Mr Jonathan Kan, Chief Executive Officer of FEMSB.

He further hope that Pet World Malaysia 2010 will attract more foreign exhibitors next year at the same time investment in the pet food and accessories manufacturing which can boost foreign exchange.

Ask Our VetQuestion: Should I keep my cats indoors?

Answer: The answer here is a pretty clear “indoor cats only.” There is just no need to let your cats outside. Unlike dogs, cats will readily use litter boxes and never need to go outside. Many people assume they will be unhappy if you lock them inside - but this isn’t the case. Indoor cats lead happier, healthier lives than cats that are allowed outside. And if you never let them out, they’ll never know the difference. Why not let your cats be outdoor cats? Because they will be subject to all manner of risks that they will never have to face if they only live inside. Having had a number of cats over the course of my life, I can tell you the risks are real. Most of our cats were outdoor cats when I was a kid, free to go out the cat door any time they wanted. We lost one to licking up antifreeze, one went out one day and never came back, one was run over by a car, one contracted feline leukemia from other cats while outside and died from it, and one that contracted feline AIDS from other cats and had to be put down. None of these cats would have died had they been kept solely indoors. Over the same period, we had only one outdoor cat actually make it to a natural death of old age. As an adult, my current cat is not allowed outside, is in perfect health at age 10, and hopefully should last quite a bit longer. There are just too many risks to your cat outdoors - rabies, injuries, car accidents, fights with other animals, any number of diseases they will contract from contact with other cats, abuse from twisted individuals, danger from predators (yes, they’re out there - owls, coyotes, etc.).

If that still hasn’t convinced you, all you should need to know is that the average life span of an outside cat according to the Society for the Prevention for Cruelty to Animals is 2 years. The average lifespan of an indoor cat is 10 years, with many living up to 20 years old. Think about that before the next time you let your cat outside - are you really OK with your cat dying within the next

two years? If not, then you need to keep them inside, because odds are they won’t survive that long

Question: What if my dog has stopped drinking entirely?

Answer: This is a serious issue, because dehydration can be fatal. If none of the above work, it is a must that you take the dog to the vet. Generally, a refusal to drink means the dog is having some kind of illness - if it feels horrible it may not want to drink, and some diseases such as canine urinary tract infections can stop them from drinking as well because of pain in urinating. Don’t put off the vet trip - dogs cannot go that long without water. Several days to a week is all they’d have without water depending on the conditions, so you need to act relatively fast to stop dehydration.

Doggie Doggie was recommended by a friend to Ms. Pang and since then, Doggie Doggie has been her place to visit for the past 2 years. One of her dogs suffered skin problems but Doggie Doggie made things ok with their terrific skin treatment. Furthermore, the price they charge is pretty reasonable and customers will definitely get the maximum bang of their bucks!

Seriously, if a pet shop is good, customers will not only often pay visits at the shop but will also find opportunities to cater for the services even at pet fairs such as the Pet World Malaysia 2009!

Dog owners have no one to blame but themselves when they think their canine pals give them that familiar “guilty look.”

You see guilt, but the dog doesn’t necessarily feel it, a new study shows. By setting up conditions where the owner was misinformed as to whether his or her dog had really committed an offence, researcher Alexandra Horowitz of Barnard College in New York uncovered the origins of dogs’ allegedly downcast mugs.

Horowitz was able to show that the human tendency to attribute a guilty look to a dog was not due to whether the dog was indeed guilty. Instead, people see guilt in a dog’s body language when they believe the dog has done something it shouldn’t have, even if the dog is in fact completely innocent of any offence.

During the video-taped study, owners were asked to leave the room after ordering their dogs not to eat a tasty treat. While the owner was away, Horowitz gave some of the dogs this forbidden treat

R46

The Dog’s BlogAre they disturbing you?The Famous Dogs’ Guilty Look!

Page 47: Day Out - Petster Magazine!

The Dog’s Blogbefore asking the owners back into the room. In some trials, the owners were told that their dog had eaten the forbidden treat; in others, they were told their dog had behaved properly and left the treat alone. What the owners were told, however, often did not correlate with reality.

Whether the dogs’ demeanor included elements of the “guilty look” had little to do with whether the dogs had actually eaten the forbidden treat or not.

Dogs looked most “guilty” if they were admonished by their owners for eating the treat. In fact, dogs that had been obedient and had not eaten the treat, but were scolded by their (misinformed) owners, looked more “guilty” than those that had, in fact, eaten the treat.

Thus the dog’s guilty look is a response to the owner’s behavior, and not necessarily indicative of any appreciation of its own misdeeds.

The study involved 14 dogs and their 14 owners. The six male dogs and eight female dogs included six mongrels and eight purebreds — a Brussels griffon, two dachshunds, a Tibetan terrier, a cockapoo, a shih-tzu, a wheaten terrier and a Labrador retriever.

This study sheds new light on anthropomorphism — the natural human tendency to interpret animal behavior in human terms, Horowitz said.

Anthropomorphism involves comparing animal behavior to human behavior, and if there is some superficial similarity, then the animal behavior will be interpreted in the same terms as superficially similar human actions. This can include the attribution of higher-order emotions, such as guilt or remorse, to the animal.

Psychologist Clive D.L. Wynne of the University of Florida, called Horowitz’s study “a remarkably powerful demonstration of the need for careful experimental designs if we are to understand the human-dog relationship and not just rectify our natural prejudices about animal behavior.”

Dogs are the oldest domesticated species and have a uniquely intimate role in the lives of millions of people, Wynne said. Recent research on dogs has indicated more human-like forms of reasoning about what people know than has been demonstrated even in chimpanzees, he said.

Dog colouring?

Lets start with a pet. If pet is not dirty and oily, hair is fluff and clean, areas like ears and tail or tail highlights can be done before the initial bath but if the pet is extremely dirty then it is better to give it a wash to remove dirt, oil and fine debris in the coat. If dirt is trapped in the hair shaft, it can damage the hair as the cuticle is held open by the debris.

Coloring the clean combed hair will allow the dye and coloring to penetrate the hair and color stays on longer. But too much color may also leave coat damage and invite matting if the coat is not thoroughly cleaned after the rinse out. Wash as usual after processing the color product for the recommended time, usually 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the color medium and type you choose.

I will always recommend a good conditioner with a thorough conditioning rinse to seal the hair cuticle, thus helping to lock in the colors. I always use Chris Christensen conditioner and volume protein treatment. This will help keep a deeper and brighter color lasting longer. Once I colored a pet, I will consistently condition and treat its hair. Damaged hair / cuticle should be treated well with conditioners because cuticle cannot repair by itself once it is damaged.

For all over or large area coverage and competition grooming, use a good clarifying shampoo to bath your dog. I prefer Chris Christensen Clarifying shampoo. If you prefer to add baking soda to the shampoo or follow the shampoo with a baking soda rinse, this will open the cuticles of the hair shaft to allow dye to be more accepted to the hair. But a word of caution, baking soda can at times causes dry hair. Conditioning is vital once baking soda is applied.

I use human hair dryer set at warm temperature heat and set the color to speed up the process time. Rinse your dog with cool water until the water runs clear, and follow with a good conditioner

to close and seal the hair. Cool water helps to seal the cuticles.

Your coloring result is influenced by many different factors from hair-type and beginning color. Wiry, harsh, fine, silky, curly, straight and wavy hair accepts colors differently. What works for one coat may not work for another of the same type and the color sometimes will “fall out” or stay depending on the health of the hair itself. It is harder to put colors on hard coats and dark coats and less likely to be influenced by color mediums.

ChitChat CatHousehold cats exercise this control with a certain type of urgent-sounding, high-pitched meow, according to the findings.

This meow is actually a purr mixed with a high-pitched cry. While people usually think of cat purring as a sign of happiness, some cats make this purr-cry sound when they want to be fed. The study showed that humans find these mixed calls annoying and difficult to ignore.

“The embedding of a cry within a call that we normally associate with contentment is quite a subtle means of eliciting a response,” said Karen McComb of the University of Sussex. “Solicitation purring is probably more acceptable to humans than overt meowing, which is likely to get cats ejected from the bedroom.”

They know us Previous research has shown similarities between cat cries and human infant cries. McComb suggests that the purr-cry may subtly take advantage of humans’ sensitivity to cries they associate with nurturing offspring. Also, including the cry within the purr could make the sound “less harmonic and thus more difficult to habituate to,” she said.

McComb got the idea for the study from her experience with her own cat, who would consistently wake her up in the mornings with a very insistent purr. After speaking with other cat owners, she learned that some of their cats also made the same type of call. As a scientist who studies vocal communication in mammals, she decided to investigate the manipulative meow.

Tough to test Setting up the experiments wasn’t easy. While the felines used purr-cries around their familiar owners, they were not eager to make the same cries in front of strangers. So McComb and her team trained cat owners to record their pets’ cries - capturing the sounds made by cats when they were seeking food and when they were not. In all, the team collected recordings from 10 different cats.

The researchers then played the cries back for 50 human participants, not all of whom owned

cats. They found that humans, even if they had never had a cat themselves, judged the purrs recorded while cats were actively seeking food - the purrs with an embedded, high-pitched cry - as more urgent and less pleasant than those made in other contexts.

When the team re-synthesised the recorded purrs to remove the embedded cry, leaving all else unchanged, the human subjects’ urgency ratings for those calls decreased significantly.

McComb said she thinks this cry occurs at a low level in cats’ normal purring, “but we think that cats learn to dramatically exaggerate it when it proves effective in generating a response from humans.” In fact, not all cats use this form of purring at all, she said, noting that it seems to most often develop in cats that have a one-on-one relationship with their owners rather than those living in large households, where their purrs might be overlooked.

Our Furry Friends

Although Holland Lops are small, they are active and quite playful, so they should be housed in a cage that will give them plenty of room. Three quarters of a square foot per pound of adult weight of floor space in a cage is pretty much the rule of thumb for rabbit cages of any breed. Holland Lops are a good choice for a new rabbit owner. Some does (females) tend to be skittish and/or hyper and should be handled carefully. Holland Lops are generally very easy to care for and are a popular breed for pets due to their size and fun-loving nature.

Holland Lops weigh between three and four pounds, though three pounds is the ideal in the show ring. Holland Lops are known for their short, cobby bodies, round heads, and massive appearance in a small rabbit. Holland Lops have short, dense fur that comes in a variety of colors. Holland Lops are shown in two basic color classifications; Solid (not spotted) and Broken (spotted). They have ears that hang down about an inch below their jawbone and sit next to their cheeks. The head on a Holland Lop should be high on its shoulders. Holland Lops go through a period of puberty where they can look a little unattractive, but they generally grow out of it at about four months. The timing of this stage can vary depending on the bloodline. Most go through the “uglies” at between two and four months of age. They typically do not finish “blooming” into their full show potential until they are between 12 and 18 months.

Adrian De Cock, a man from the Netherlands, developed the Holland Lop. They are a cross of a Netherland Dwarf, French Lop and English Lop. The breed was perfected by 1955 and was first seen in the United States in 1976. The American Rabbit Breeder’s Association recognized the Holland Lop in 1980.

Cage size should be a minimum of 24 inches by 24 inches. Proper shelter with heating as well as cooling should be a factor also. Holland Lops are reported to do well on a diet of pellets combined with Timothy hay, some people also choose to add greens to the diet, though greens have been reported to cause diarrhea. Overfeeding of alfalfa can lead to health problems, and if they are fed solely on alfalfa the results can be fatal. Other choices can include dark green vegetables, carrots, dandelions, clover, and dried papaya. Lettuce and cabbage should be avoided, as they do not have much nutritional value for rabbits. These are affectionate rabbits that enjoy being pet often, though some report they do not like to be touched on the chin.

The Holland Lop is a small rabbit that is both charming and loving. Breeders and owners both enjoy Holland Lops a lot.

“Specifically formulated for

dogs with digestive tract sensitivity.

Approved by allergy labs for dogs with

food allergies. Contains over 5% linoleic acid. Great for improving your pet’s skin and coat

condition.”Ingredients: Turkey Meal, Oat Groats, Dried Beet Pulp, Brown Rice, Vegetable Oil, Natural Flavor, Lecithin, Flax Seed Meal, Sea Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Fish Oil, Potassium Chloride, DL Methionine, L-Lysine, Choline Chloride, Ascorbic Acid, Propionic Acid, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product Dehydrated, Glucosamine, Vitamin E Supplement, Biotin, Niacin Supplement, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Acetate, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Menadione Dimethylpyrimidinol Bisulfite (Source of Vitamin K Activity), Citric Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate.

Holland Lops can prove to be challenging to breed. Finding the right Doe for breeding is the key to success. After mating the female will undergo a gestation period of approximately 31 days, with litters averaging four kits. Like other dwarf breeds, they do have occasional “peanut” babies, which is when the baby inherits two dwarfing genes - this is a lethal gene combination.

It has been reported that it is not uncommon for Holland does to lose their first and maybe even their second litter of kits so don’t get discouraged. It usually takes two to three tries to get a healthy litter. Also, when you are not breeding, bucks and does should not be caged right next to each other if their cages are made of wire because they have been known to mate through the wire.

Tank Residents

They are commonly found in their natural habitats that are inclusive of rocky deserts and savannas. Their scientific name “Eublepharis macularius” comes from the word “Eu blephar” which means “true eyelids” and “macularius” which means “spots”. Leopard geckos’ diet consists of insects such as crickets, mealworms, grasshoppers, and any viable insects that are no bigger than the width of the geckos’ head, so that they could overpower and consume their prey. Generally, they attain a total length of 6 to 11 inches, where males are typically larger than females. But some (such as the Giant specimen) may reach a total length of 12 inch or more. Unlike many other gecko species, leopard geckos possess small claws instead of adhesive toe pads, which prevent them from climbing smooth vertical surfaces. However, their claws give extra traction on the ground and are helpful in digging compared to their more common and prolific cousins.

Leopard geckos have become well-established, particularly in the pet industry. Famously known as “Leos”, leopard geckos, thanks to selective breeding programs, are far from being just “spotted”. The selective breeding of leopard geckos over the past decade has created close to 200 morphs (to the date of writing). “Morphs” in this context mainly refers to patterns, coloration or any desirable traits of mutation that are selectively bred. Leopard geckos have become the reptile analog of Koi carp, displaying a wide array of bright colors and patterns that make them premiere examples of living arts (Vosjoli et. al.). Some of the classic morphs that have been around for decades are hi-yellow, albino, pattern-less, blizzard, jungle and tangerine while some of the newer morphs include Enigma, Mack Snow, Hot tangerine, SHTCT, Redstripes and R.A.P.T.O.R. (stands for Ruby-eyed Albino Patternless Tremper ORange). Living art at its best, leopard geckos’ prices would range from RM80 up to RM10,000 per animal, and sometimes even more. The ‘catalyst’ for such prices is determined from the quality and rarity of morphs, where the basic principle of supply and demand applies. A newer and more attractive morph would cost even more than the older and less attractive one. And due to the emergence of new morphs every year, leopard geckos will continue to thrive and will remain as the mainstream reptiles in the industry.

A leopard gecko is not considered as an endangered or a protected animal, locally nor internationally. It is not listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) nor the Malaysian Wildlife Protection Act (WPA) 1972. Originally they were exported from both Pakistan and India since the 1960s, but much has changed since then. Due to the explosion of captive breeding programs around the globe to produce a variety of attractive mutations, leopard geckos have become prolific over the past decades and can be acquired easily from pet stores, breeders or even in on-line classifieds. Thus the wild population which is deemed as normal and less attractive by many is spared from the pressure of mass-collection for the pet trade, making them virtually unavailable in today’s market. The best specimens of leopard gecko morphs exist only in captivity and not in the wild. Breeders have gone far to establish leopard

gecko morphs until they are portrayed as a living art. Therefore, leopard geckos are not subjected to any special permits to be kept, bred or sold in most areas in the world because there are many captive bred, more attractive and healthier specimens for the public to choose from compared to their counterparts in the wild.

To conclude, it’s no fluke that the leopard gecko is one of the most popular reptile pet in captivity. They stay small, exist in a wide variety of morphs, fit for any budget (low or high), easier to maintain and possess no legality issue. Add these traits to their docile temperament and hardiness, and it’s fairly obvious why leopard geckos have enjoyed such wonderful and positive remarks over the years. So, if it is a manageable reptile you crave, then there are no better reptiles come to mind except for leopard geckos. I assure you that there are more than meets the eye concerning this wonderful animal. But in order to know more, I suggest you to get one and cherish the experience yourself! - Firdaus Karim

Dancing as we think of it has generally been thought to be a skill that only humans possessed (well, some of us). But a new study finds that certain species of parrot can bob their heads, tap their feet and sway along with the music. The findings, detailed May 26 issue of the journal Current Biology, might actually shed light on how humans came to invent steps from the waltz to the Electric Slide. Adena Schachner, a graduate student at Harvard, and her colleagues studied Alex, the famous African grey parrot, and Snowball, a sulfur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita eleonora) and found that they “danced” to the beat of human music.

Snowball’s moves even brought him online fame. One of Snowball’s favorite tunes to get down to was the Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody.” Dancing had long been thought to be a solely human habit because, “there is no convincing evidence that our closest relatives, chimpanzees and other apes, can keep a beat, and there is similarly no evidence that our pet dogs and cats can line up their actions with a musical beat, in spite of extensive experience with humans,” Schachner said. The home videos that garnered Snowball fame on YouTube led Schachner and her colleagues to study the cockatoo’s avian groove more closely. “Our analyses showed that these birds’ movements were more lined up with the musical beat than we’d expect by chance,” Schachner said. “We found strong evidence that they were synchronizing with the beat, something that has not been seen before in other species.” So why cockatoos and not chimps? The answer may be an ability that Alex and Snowball (and humans) have in common: vocal mimicry.

Scientists recently proposed that the same brain mechanisms that were selected by evolution to allow for vocal mimicry also allow an animal to keep a beat. For both mimicry and dance, you’re listening to a sound and constantly monitoring both your output (the vocal sounds you make or the tapping of your foot) and the sound coming in through your ears. Schachner and her colleagues tested this idea by searching the YouTube database for videos of animals, including mimics and non-mimics (such as cats and dogs), moving along with a musical beat. The work was funded by the McDonnell Foundation. They ruled out potentially “fake” videos where music was added afterwards or the animal was following some visual movement. All the animals whose speed matched that of the music and kept in time with the beat were vocal mimics, including 14 species of parrot and one species of elephant. “Our data suggests that some of the brain mechanisms needed for human dance originally evolved to allow us to imitate sound,” Schachner said.

They might not be able to get a spot in a Broadway show, but some birds can dance. (Source: www.livescience.com)
