Description of ThemeDay of the Dead or Dia de Muertos.

The Day of the Dead is a celebration of lost loved ones, together with friends and family whilst enjoying sumptuous banquets of food and wine, such as is a fiesta. Traditionally celebrated throughout central and southern parts of Mexico. This theme aims to bring the essence of that celebration to central Auckland, at AUT’s Four Seasons Restaurant. The redesigning will take place during the month of July, 2015.

The design will capture the rich Mexican culture in a sophisticated, and authentic manner. The overall feel will exude full bodied, deep tones, with pops of colour, in line with the traditional festival ‘look’. The connecting elements will be the colour palette, flowers bouquets, dark timber and brightly painted skull designs. All of which will be incorporated throughout all aspects to ensure a consistent composition.

Figure one shows the types of Tapa-platters that will accompany our theme. Serving Mexican canapés/tapas (finger foods), will not only keep with the theme but encourage an interactive atmosphere for the participants.

Figure two is an example of the variety of finger foods to be served. In serving easy and quick meals, as well as limiting the number of seats, will allow the participants to move around freely and importantly encourage interaction.

Figure three is a quick colour pallet to show the material colours that will be used to drape across the ceiling. This opens the room up more and helps bring the colourful/Mexican theme together.

Fig 4 follows on from fig 3 and shows how the material will be draped throughout the ceiling, The hanging lights will be kept in the same place and the material will be strung around objects that cannot be moved. Colourful lanterns will be able to cover these objects.

Fig 5 shows a small image of what our Mexican cocktails will be served in. These are the drinks that will be served at the bar.

Fig 6 shows what the waiters and waitresses will look like. We would like them to be dressed professionally in black and white uniforms but their faces will be painted professionally with day of the dead painting to bring them into the theme of the venue. This means that the theme is interacting with the people rather than it just being still around them.

Floor Design Description

Ceiling Design:* Dark deep-toned colors of satin and velvet material draped

throughout the ceiling space, allowing space for original light fixtures.

* Eight theme-designed chandeliers (one meter length from ceiling), decorated in tealights and draping deep-toned floral arrangement, will be fixed in to the ceiling.

Wall Design:* Beamed Wall: Strategically-placed historical Mexican ‘Day of the

dead’ framed artwork to the original wood design, incorporating the two textures for a rustic showcase. Small floor light fixtures pointing towards the artwork, will give a dramatic light effect and add to the shadowed atmosphere.

* Glass Wall/Doors: Framed in dark satin drapes.Entrance/Door design:* A large theme-designed skull will cover the door entrance,

designed to open at the skulls mouth for a dramatic and engaging effect.

Floor Design Description

Bar Design:* Bar counter top will be decorated with thick white candles, skull-

lanterns, with the 3 corner points decorated with deep-toned colored floral arrangements draping to floor length.

High tables design:* Each high table will be draped in dark deep-toned satin and velvet

material, draping to the floor.* Each table will hold a Skull lantern and deep-toned floral

arrangement for the centerpiece.Balcony design:* A display area, decorated with skulls, candles and flowers of all

colors and sizes – dramatically surrounding a built-in fireplace at the center.

Shrine design:* The corner shrine will showcase traditional ‘day of the dead’

artifacts, decorated with dramatic floral arrangements, candles and skulls

Floor Design Description

Floor space design:* As shown in the floor plan, the furniture and display sections are

organized as such to allow for ample space and room for movement.

Lounge area:* This seating area will hold two large lounge chairs, five rustic

crate tables, decorated with skulls, floral arrangements and candles.
