Out on the Town Looking for Fun and Games!!
JSSF2013 Newsletter
Down to Business Yesterday was our chance to look into the engine room of Japan’s economy. Gekkeikan Sake Co. opened up its secrets to one group that had a strangely large proportion of teachers accompanying it. Of course when the task of tasting the brew’s fitness for human consumption came these same teachers volunteered; strictly in the interests of science of course. Other delegates certainly had their chips at ROHM. Kyocera pried one of its engineers from his lair to brighten up the room with a vibrant hands-on and question and answer session to fill our participants in the challenges and secrets of keeping Japan at the leading edge of the race for solar power efficiency. Yushin impressed with its slick automatons’ production of further high-tech stuff. Nippon Shinyaku gave our delegates a close up view of the effects of various drugs on the heart. Not for the faint-hearted I imagine. A big thank you to these companies for showing science in action.
The attraction of Kiyomizu-dera is not just the temple itself, but also the shop-lined cobblestone path heading up to the main gate. For some of the more adventurous ones, the paths off the beaten track offered the strayers the chance to take a step back in time and explore shops from another generation. As for the temple itself, some students chose to try and catch the water from Otowa waterfall to have their wishes granted while some of the more lonely students (and teachers, too) tried walking between a pair of “love stones” with their eyes closed! Those who made it are sure to find true love. Stay tuned. The view of the cherry and maple trees erupting in a sea of colors offered another magical moment from Kiyomizu-dera.
Odds and Ends In 2007, Kiyomizudera was one of 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World. However, it was not picked as one of the seven winning sites.

Welcome to Ritsumeikan Junior and Senior High School
Today’s the day when you finally get to see where all of your
buddies obtain the fine education that makes them all what they are
today. But make the most of your visit to the Fukakusa campus
because Ritsumeikan High School will be moving its campus in time for
next year’s fair. Get ready for a taste of Japanese culture as
Ritsumeikan’s high school students give you a hands-on introduction to
Japan and Ritsumeikan. Learn a traditional fisherman’s dance, get the
scoop from the poster presentation, try your hand at Japanese
calligraphy and the national pastime of tea ceremony! Be sure to get
your dancing shoes on for part 2 of the cultural presentations.

Odds and Ends Many of you may have noticed the abundance of small chocolate coated biscuit sticks yesterday. These popular snacks are called Pocky and are shared by people as a sign of their friendship. Why today you ask? Think about it…yesterday was November 11 (11-11) so…well if you haven’t got it yet you should just ask your buddy.
