Competency: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the powers and duties of the Presidency.

SWBAT: Identify the different roles of the presidency.

SWBAT: Create a president with qualities that fulfill the various roles of the presidency.

+Legislative Leader

State of the Union Address- sets forth programs or policies the president wants Congress to put in effect as laws.

SotUA- Usually presented in late January.

Budget- proposes how federal government should raise and spend money

Veto= powerful tool that influences Congress.

+Commander in Chief

Head of the armed forces- military officers answer to the president.

Final say planning on how a war is to be fought.

Only Congress can declare war but president can send troops where US interests are threatened.

War Powers Resolution (1973) president must recall troops within 60 days until Congress approves action.

+Foreign Policy Leader

Foreign policy- government plan for interacting with other countries.

Secure friendly relations and preserve national security.

President appoints diplomats to represent US government.

Diplomacy- the art of dealing with foreign governments.

Treaties- written agreements. Must be approved by the Senate.

+More Presidential Powers

Power to appoint Supreme Court Justices and other federal judges.

Justices are approved by a majority vote in the Senate.

Reprieve- postpones carrying out of a persons sentence.

Pardon- forgives a person for his or her crime.

Commutation- reduces a persons sentence.
