This week we will talk, sing, read and write about treasures we can find in

our country.

One of the treasures in our country is the Grand Canyon. Why do you think it is a treasure? What treasure do you see in the small

photograph on page 89? We build monuments to honor people and events that are

important in our nation’s history.

•Our flag is a symbol of our country. A symbol is an object that stands for something else. Our flag is a symbol of our country because it has fifty stars, one for each state. This plus sign (+) is a symbol for addition. It tells us to add numbers.

•A nation is a country or the people who live in a country. The United States is a nation. The American flag is a symbol of our nation.

•A tourist is a person who travels for fun. Many tourists visit Washington, D. C. every year.
