Course Introduction:

Learning or teaching a language is based on four basic skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing, and all these four skills are inter-related with each other. Therefore, our English Curriculum has been designed to develop these skills in our students. We going to instill these skills in our students, by following these stratagies:-

Skills:

1. Listening and Speaking:

Listening is the basic skill in English learning. If students learn to listen carefully and mindfully, they will be able to read, write and speak well. So, to develop this ability in students, they will be provided opportunities to listen and then speak on the given topics.

2. Reading:

Reading actually means to read with proper intonation (accent) and mindfulness, comprehend what you are reading, learn new words and phrases, and then express analytically by responding correctly to the given questions related to the text

3. Writing:

Writing will be taught in such a way that the students will not be jumbled with their thought, try to organize their work and be self-corrigible. Following process will be followed to make them

Course Categorization:

The course has been categorized into 5 parts, aims at escalating the above mentioned skills in the learners. The categorization is as followed:-

1. Conversation sessions (Listening and Speaking) Course Book: Oxford Progressive English Book 6

Listening and speaking lessons are given in every unit in the above mentioned book. Students will not be allowed to open books in class. Topics and prompts will be given by the teacher to students, brainstorming will be done and they will be taught and motivated to think, organize their thoughts and speak appropriately in class. Students will listen to their classmates and will be provided opportunities to speak and express their thoughts sensibly. Such sessions will help students to enhance their vocabulary, become creative, share and express their feelings, improve their spoken English and gain confidence.

2. Literature (Reading, Writing and Analysis) Course Book: A Little Princess Reference Book: Dictionary

Students will read and analyze the complete novel. A short review of the novel is as follows:-

Grammar Skills: Students will read comprehension passages given in the course book and do the related exercises , in their note books.

• Correct and improve spellings and punctuation, grammar, clarity of text, add or take away information, fix mistakes.

Publish

• Write a final draft, presenting to public, make it look good.

Before writing

• Brain Storming and discuss to generate the ideas; select a topic, decide the purpose and audience; organize the ideas.

Make a Rough Draft

• Write the first or a rough draft not perfect and final, contain mistakes, do not worry about the mistakes or details just write!

Revise • Consider content, focus and organize your ideas and that improve

what you have wrote, make it clearer, change words and information.

4. Grammar (Writing) Reference Book: Grammar Tree

Nouns, verbs, vowels, articles, conjunctions, tense etc. have been done in previous classes. These will be revised and done in continuation with more variations and in detail according to their class level. New concepts like, types of sentences, idioms, metaphors and informal letter writing.

Language activities and exercises are associated with the comprehension passages in the book as this is the latest trend in English learning. It will help students to relate grammar with comprehension and literature, thus develop analytical skills in them. Written work will be done in note books and work sheets. Reference books and websites mentioned above can be used by the students for further help and practice.

5. Creative Writing (Writing and Analysis)

Students’ creative, imaginative and thinking abilities will be developed and polished in this part of curriculum, so that they will be able to express themselves in writing independently using parts and figures of speech that they have been learning in English Grammar. Exercises and activities for creative thinking and writing are given by the teacher. They will follow teacher’s instructions and write in their note books after following writing process. Brainstorming will be done in class and teachers’ assistance will be provided to the students.

Activities:

• Crosswords, Word puzzles, Jumbled Sentences and Sequencing of Paragraphs will be conducted in various classes to make language learning a fun exercise.

• Essay Writing Competition, Story Writing Competition and Poetry Writing Competitions will be held to give a vent to their creative energies and to encourage students to work at improving their writing skills.

• Debates, Panel Discussions, Declamation and Extempore will also help raise their confidence level and make them develop the art of public speaking.

• Elocutionary Competitions will be encouraged to recite their favourite poems or a short prose, which requires the skill of being able to manifest expressions in the written text.

• Students will attend the Drama Festival organized by the joint effort of all the levels to encourage students’ imagination, creativity, and possible acting skills. It will also help to inculcate in them the desire to work independently and responsibly.

Grammar:

Compound Adjectives: A compound adjective is an adjective made up of two or more words linked by a hyphen. Exercises to insert appropriate compound adjectives in the sentences will be given to the students to do in their notebook. E.g. The cottage was covered with snow. It was a snow-covered cottage. Connectives: A connective is a word or phrase that links clauses or sentences. Connectives like while, although and since will be done. Students will be asked to use these connectives in sentences. Figures of Speech: Metaphors Similes Personification Comparative and Superlative Adjectives: Comparatives and Superlatives are special forms of adjectives. They are used to compare two or more things. Generally, comparatives are formed using -er and superlatives are formed using -est. With some two-syllable words and almost all words with three or more syllables, the comparative and superlative adjectives are formed by using more and most. Exercise to fill grid with appropriate superlative and comparative adjective will be done in class. E.g:

Adverbs: An adverb tells more about the verb. It is usually formed by adding –ly to the adjective. Exercise on making adverbs will be done followed by making sentences with those wardrobes will be done. E.g. Homonyms: Homonyms are words which have the same spelling and sound, but have completely different meanings. Exercise will be done where students will find two meanings of a single word and then make sentence of each. E.g. Crane Meaning 1: (noun) a machine for lifting heavy weights During the storm the tall crane fell over and was blown into the sea Meaning 2: (noun) a type of large bird with long legs The crane was wading through the water at the river’s edge

Suffixes: A suffix is a syllable which does not make sense on its own. However, when it is added to the end of a word, it changes the meaning of the stem word. Exercise will be done in class where the students will write down correct adjectives ending in the suffix –less. E.g. Use-Useless Relative Pronouns: Relative Pronouns tell us more about someone in the sentence. Relative pronouns that go with people are Who, Whom, Whose Relative Pronouns that go with things are Which and That Exercise will be done where students will be asked to fill the blanks with appropriate Relative pronouns. E.g. The man whose ears were filled with wax sailed safely past the island.

Asking Questions- using do, does, did: When you ask a question, you have to use the auxiliary verb “do” a) Simple present: Do/Does + Infinitive form b) Simple Past: Did + Infinitive form Exercise will be done in class where students will be asked to write their own questions as per different situations provide to them. E.g: Ask whether they eat meat. Do they eat meat?

Present Continuous Tense: The present continuous tense is formed by the simple present of the verb ‘to be’ + the –ing present participle. Exercise will be done where students will be asked to fill blanks with correct tense of an appropriate verb. E.g: Irfan is feeding the birds.

Antonyms using prefixes un- and anti-: 1) The prefix un- changes the meaning of the stem word and makes a word that means the opposite of

the stem word. Another word for an opposite is Antonym

2) The prefix anti- means against, in opposition to. There is usually a hyphen (-) between anti- and the word.

Exercise will be done where the students will have to write down antonyms with prefix un- and anti-. E.g: Happy- Unhappy Active and Passive Voice: The active voice is the "normal" voice. This is the voice that we use most of the time. You are probably already familiar with the active voice. In the active voice, the object receives the action of the verb The passive voice is less usual. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action of the verb Exercise will be done in class where students will be asked to identify the voice in each sentence. E.g: - She was sent a cheque for a thousand Euros. - I gave him a book for his birthday.

Grammar: Indirect and Direct Question: Indirect Question The reporter asked when doctor would know whether the operation had been a complete success. Direct Question “When will you know whether the operation has been a complete success?” asked the reporter Exercise will be done where students will be asked to re-write indirect questions as direct questions. Pairs of Commas: A word, phrase or clause, in a sentence sometimes gives you added, non-essential information about someone or something in the sentence. The sentence would make complete sense without the non-essential information. When this happens, the word, phrase or clauses giving the extra information is often presented between commas. Exercise will be done where students will put in pairs of commas where necessary. E.g: My friend, Sara, was not feeling well yesterday. Acronyms: Acronyms are words which are made up of the initial letters of a hroup of words. The initial letters make a new word, which can be pronounced. Acronyms should not be confused with abbreviations in which each initial letter is pronounced separately. Exercise will be done where students will be asked to tell what each acronym stand for. E.g: RAM

Apostrophes: Apostrophes are used for two reasons: 1) Possession- To show that something belongs to someone 2) Omission- To show where a letter or letters have been left out, usually from verbs.

Exercise will be done where students will be asked to underline apostrophes in text of course book. Tag Questions: A tag is the little tail which, when put at the end of a statement, turns the statement into a question. We ask tag questions when we speak, and we write them in direct speech. Exercise will be done where students will complete statements with a tag question. E.g: The video will be for sale, won’t it?

Grammar: Count and non-count Nouns: A count noun refers to an individual thing, such as house, bird, train or computer. A non count noun refers to a ass or an abstract idea or notion, such as rice, petrol, cricket, music, advice. Exercise will be done where students will fill in the gaps in sentences with the correct form of noun. E.g: The woman was sewing by the light coming through the window. Definite and Indefinite Articles: The articles affect the meaning of the noun or noun phrase. The definite article ‘the’ is used for both singular and plural nouns. In other words, the definite article is used in specific cases when nouns refers to things or individuals which the reader or listener knows something about. The indefinite article ‘a’ or ‘an’ for a singular noun. Exercise will be done where students will be asked to fill blanks with appropriate articles. E.g: The dog was sleeping peacefully A dog was sleeping peacefully

Instructions for Novel

Students are instructed to read the novel thoroughly to sequence the events and for identifying RTCs.

Must use new vocabulary in sentences of their own to enhance their writing skills. Try to find contrast in characters to comment on their personality traits with evidences from the

context.

Students can take help from the net to read chapter wise summary of the story.

Instructions for Comprehensions

Students must read as many passages as possible and try to answer the questions according to the

given instructions. Students need to use dictionary in- order to find out meanings of new or difficult

words.

Instructions for Compositions

Students will be given format for all types of compositions and letter writing. They must follow the

same pattern and work on the given instructions. Students will work on rough and fair drafts both.

Instructions for Work Book

Students will do selected exercises from the workbook of the units done.

Note

Worksheets on different topics will be provided by the school.
