This month our students attended assemblies that highlighted our character trait of the month: responsibility. We had two assemblies: one for our Kindergarten and Primary students and another for our Junior students, both hosted by Davisville’s student leadership team. A special thank you to our student leaders, Kimberly, Isabella, Shawqi, Solomon, Ilgaz, Nagomi and Lakshman for doing such a great job! Each team member spoke eloquently and with great confidence. For the Kindergarten and Primary assemblies, the story The Paper Boy by Dav Pilkey was shared. During the Junior assembly, the student leaders read The Day of Ahmed’s Secret by Florence Parry Heide. At the end of both stories, our leaders asked the students to identify the overall messages. We encourage you to ask your child to share with you how each story captured the character trait of responsibility. Here are some questions that you can use to prompt some thinking about responsibility based on the stories ahead.

October’s Character Trait is
Resposibility
1) How do the paperboy and his dog start their day? 2) Can you describe what it would feel like to wake up early in the morning to do a specific
job, in this case, deliver newspapers? 3) Do you have any jobs or chores at home? Do these jobs make you feel responsible?
What does responsibility mean to you?
For Kindergarten and Primary Students: The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey
For Junior Students: The Day of Ahmed’s Secret by Florence Parry Heide
1) How does the character Ahmed show responsibility in the story? 2) Can you name some of the jobs that he had? In your opinion, would these jobs be easy
or difficult? 3) Ahmed shares a powerful secret at the end of the story- do you remember what it was?
How is this secret tied into the character trait of responsibility? 4) How do you demonstrate responsibility during the day? At school? At home?
November’s Character Trait Focus is Empathy
According to the Cambridge dictionary, empathy is “the ability to share someone else’s
feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in their situation.”
When we go through challenging circumstances, it’s always comforting to know that someone
else can imagine and share our experience. Teaching our students to be more empathetic will
be a lifelong lesson, filled with many occasions to be both empathetic to others and to receive
empathy from others. It’s a lesson that will make us better equipped to understand the people
in our neighborhoods, our workplaces, and in a much broader sense, our world.
On Thursday October 26th, our amazing
community came together for some board
games, bingo, crafts and a free Halloween
costume swap and pick up. The evening was a
huge success; families commented on how the
evening allowed them to bond by playing and
laughing together. Thanks to everyone who
participated and organized- we look forward to
next year’s Games’ Night.
We are so fortunate to learn about Diwali at Davisville! On October 17th, some of our incredible
parents organized activities for our students that showcased the meaning of this important
celebration. Students watched videos, participated in interactive crafts and sampled some Diwali
treats as part of the experience. Here are some comments that were shared by some of our
students:
“I learned so much about Diwali. I really liked watching the video because it explained how Diwali
began. My favourite part of the video was when they showed Ram, Sita and Hanuman.” Grade 4
student
“ I liked learning about the tradition and customs of Diwali. I liked talking about how people
decorate their houses and light their places with diyas.” Grade 6 student
We want to thank our team of volunteers for their boundless energy, countless hours of
decorating our school and planning such stimulating and informative activities. Our staff also
appreciated the lovely Chai tea and the sweet and savoury food that was so lovingly shared in the
staffroom. Thanks so much for an amazing day!

Davisville Families Enjoy a Great
Night of Games
Our boys’ soccer team had a fantastic season.
We are so proud of the team’s efforts,
dedication and commitment to training and
playing collaboratively. Our boys made it to
TDSB’s semi-finals round and played an
exciting game against West Prep. According to
Ms. Francesca, “it was a nail biter!” In the end,
our team came up short as we lost 1-0 in an
overtime game shoot out. Despite this
outcome, our school is very proud of the team’s
accomplishments. Congratulations to our
coach, Ms. Francesca, Ima, Anthony, Teos,
Patrick, Umar, Antonios, Ari, Sebastian, Noah,
Zain, Shawqi, Lucas, Evan, Daniel and Dallas.

Terry Fox Foundation Honours Davisville
On October 25th, Arsh Bains from the Terry Fox
Foundation came to our school for a very important
visit. As this year marks our 15th year of participation
in the Terry Fox Run, Ms. Bains presented our school
with a fifteen year participation pennant.
Ms. Bains presented the pennant during our Primary
Character Education Assembly and spoke about how
our students are making a difference in the lives of
cancer patients everywhere by raising funds and
awareness. She showed us a replica of a prosthetic
leg that Terry Fox would have worn during his
marathon across Canada. She also brought a jug full
of water as a symbol of Terry’s famous glass jug (that
contained water from the Atlantic ocean). Ms. Bain
filled the glass jar with water from one of our
fountains to show that we continue to make Terry’s
dream of finding a cure for cancer a reality. We are so
proud to have this banner in our school; indeed “Terry
Fox lives here” is a constant reminder of the good
that we can do in order to help others.
On Friday October 27th, Grade 6 students from
M. Bell's class were invited to attend the annual
TTC Poppy Campaign kick-off event, to help
inform the public about the importance of
supporting legions, and the significance of
wearing the poppy for Remembrance Day.
Students had an opportunity to meet with
veterans and receive a poppy as a way to
demonstrate the importance of this tradition. One
student, Evan Edgell, was selected to read a
WW2 veteran's story on live television, with the
late veteran's children in attendance. The event
was covered widely by Toronto media sources,
and the students had a opportunity to share their
learning with the public. Davisville is very proud
of our students, and their participation in
preparation of Remembrance Day.
Here is a special message from Ms. Konjhodzic
and Ms. Rawlinson about our upcoming
Remembrance Day Ceremony:
To compensate the Royal Canadian Legion for
the poppies given to our school, we are asking
families for a small donation. This money will be
collected by classroom teachers and forwarded
to the Legion. Thank you for your support of this
very worthy cause.
Thank for your support!
Mme Sepetdjian's 2/3 FI class have been
talking a great deal about the importance of
spreading kindness at school, at home and in
the community. The students have been
doing random acts of kindness - such as
baking for neighbours, giving change to the
homeless, holding doors open for strangers,
saying hello to others and smiling.
The students were asked to take part
in #1000KINDNESS STREET STYLE
INSTALLATION ART led by World Karma
Project where they were to fold paper cranes
and display them in the community to spread
messages of kindness, peace and positivity.
The students spent a morning at school (and
time at home) folding cranes. They strung
them together and hung them on a tree
outside Davisville station. Each garland had a
written message to "do something kind for
the next person you meet". While hanging
the cranes, a gentleman stopped to fold his
own paper crane with the class and said how
great it was that they were spreading
kindness.
This 2/3 FI class challenges you to do your
own random act of kindness to spread
kindness and peace and to focus on the
positive! No act of kindness, no matter how
small, is ever wasted!

Poppy Kick-Off Campaign
Our annual Halloween parades were a huge
success this year! Our scary Kindergarten
students and staff showed off their amazing
costumes in the morning. In the afternoon,
our students walked over to the Isabel and
Arthur Meighen Manor Home to spread some
Halloween cheer. Some of our students also
enjoyed some crunchy mealworms and bugs!
If you are wondering how they tasted, Ms.
Comor shared that they tasted like savoury
hickory sticks…mmmm… YUMMY ! Thanks
to our amazing Snack Man Chris and Mrs.
Snack Man, Leslie for bringing in these
“scary” treats!

Halloween Safety Tips and
Reminders
During this time of year, we want to remind our
families about the importance of safety when it
comes to Halloween treats. Please consider the
following information as you enjoy some of the
goodies collected during trick or treating:
1) Please remind children not to eat their treats and goodies until they are examined by an adult at home.
2) Candy and treats should not be eaten if the package is already opened.
3) Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.
4) If your child has a nut, dairy or specific dye (chemical) sensitivity, please read the ingredient label carefully.
Dr. David Toro, an assistant clinical professor of
clinical emergency medicine at Indiana
University, also suggest that parents should
prevent children from eating too much candy. But
if they develop diarrhea, he recommends
drinking lots of fluids to stay hydrated, such as
fruit juice or soup, but not sugary drinks, sports
drinks or bottled juice.
Stay Calm and Meditate with Ms.Judy
Some of our Primary classes are learning about the power of meditation: staying calm,
quietening our minds and keeping track of our breathing are a few strategies that we are
currently working on. These skills are important tools that Ms. Judy is developing as part of
our school wide focus within the context of mental health and wellbeing. Ms. Judy’s program
will be offered to our Kindergarten and Junior students throughout the year.
