Dear Parents, Students, School Administrators and Teachers,

The first ever Davis School District Jr High STEM Olympiad will be on the night of November 4th in conjunction with the annual STEM Expo Family Night at the Davis Conference Center. Get with your school principal to see who is your adult representative. It will run from 4:30-7:30 and will be broken into three one hour blocks of time for events. There are six different events that student teams of two can compete in. The challenges are:

Sphero Challenge • Students will compete with coding sphero bots to complete challenges (basic block

coding)House Circuit Building

• Students use wires and LED lights to create a mock house lighting set up and accomplish certain tasks by room

Longest Paper Bridge • Students work to design the longest bridge out of paper possible

Paper Roller Coaster Design • Students create a roller coaster that meets certain specifications and performs certain

tasksScience Investigation

• Students are given a driving question and work as a team to investigate it, gather evidence, and make claims based on their data about the question.

Applied Math Challenge • Students are given a complex math task to engage in and argue towards an explanation.

They will also get points for several rounds of 24 (a fun and fast paced math game).

None of these events require practice or preparation at the school level. We anticipate that it could be incorporated into science explorations, Hacking STEM, creative coding, or just a club. We mean for this event to be stress free and simple. As a school you can send up to two teams per event, that would be a total of 24 students. If you need to send more I am sure we can work something out. You also are fine to only send a few teams if you want as well. A single team could compete in up to three events. We will run each of the six events three times that night. Here is the schedule.

Schedule:

• 4:30-4:40 Introductions • 4:40-5:30 Round 1  • 5:40-6:30 Round 2  • 6:40-7:30 Round 3

Families may participate in other Hands-on activities, interactive displays, visit with many business partners, explore STEM careers and much more. Come enjoy!
