In this experiment, w e combined the measurement of observable facial behavior with s imultaneous
measures o f brain electrical activity to assess patterns o f hemispheric activation in different regions
during the experience of happiness and disgust. Disgust was found to be associated with right-s ided
activation in the frontal and anterior tem poral regions compared with the happy condition. Happi-
ness was accompanied by left-s ided activation in the anterior tem poral region compared with disgust.
No differences n asym metry were found between emotions in the central and p arietal regions. When
data aggregated across positive films were compared to aggregate negative film data , no reliable
differences in brain activity were found. These finding s illustrate the utility of using facial behavior
to verify the presence o f emotion, are consis tent with the notion of emotion-specific physiological
patterning, and underscore the importance of anterior cerebral asymm etries for emotions associated
with approach and withdrawal.

The dependent measures th at were extracted from this analysis were
power dens ity ( in V2/Hz) in the a lpha (8 -13 Hz) and be ta (13-20 Hz)

review of methodological issues in EE G asy m me try research). Pow er in
the a lph a band is inversely related to act ivation (e.g., Lindsley & Wicke,
