Davidson College
Presbyterian Church
Davidson College Presbyterian Church is a welcoming, affirming, and inclusive
faith community where all are one in Christ. We are an Earth Care and Stephen
Ministry congregation on the corner of campus and community. Our
congregation celebrates partnerships in Christ with the Sigona Presbyterian
Church in Kikuyu, Kenya; and the Kilambe communities in Jinotega, Nicaragua;
and Blythe Elementary School in Huntersville, NC. Together we seek to grow in
witnessing to Christ in a complex world and to learn more about how to respond
as disciples to the great needs of the world.

A Service For The Worship Of God
3rd Sunday of Easter, April 26, 2020 ~ 11:00 a.m. Worship
Gathering around the Word
PRELUDE Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above Lloyd Larson
CALL TO WORSHIP The Tate Family One: We invite all God’s creatures to worship with us, All: All our kin living on this planet, from the busiest bee
to the loudest lion. One: We remember our animal relatives who have become
extinct, All: Dinosaurs, dodos and Texas grey wolves, Oregon
bison and the woolly mammoth. One: We join the natural world in praising God, All: Gliding eagles and watchful cougars, gorillas in the
mist, polar bears in the snow and whales in the oceans below.
One: We summon the fellow creatures we have come to love, whom God loves,
All: The stray cat and the backyard dog, the goat, the pony, and the little lamb.
One: All our animal family in all the world, All: Raise your voices to the skies in a festival of praise.
HYMN I Sing the Mighty Power of God ELLACOMBE
All sing together:
I sing the mighty power of God
that made the mountains rise,
that spread the flowing seas abroad
and built the lofty skies.
3
I sing the wisdom that ordained
the sun to rule the day.
The moon shines full at God's command,
and all the stars obey.
I sing the goodness of the Lord
who filled the earth with food.
God formed the creatures through the Word,
and then pronounced them good.
Lord, how thy wonders are displayed,
where'er I turn my eye,
if I survey the ground I tread,
or gaze upon the sky!
There's not a plant or flower below
but makes thy glories known.
And clouds arise, and tempests blow,
by order from thy throne,
while all that borrows life from thee
is ever in thy care,
and everywhere that we can be,
thou, God, art present there.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION Robert Alexander All: Creator God, the world is yours and all that is in it.
The heavens declare your handiwork, the earth sings your praise. The rhythm of life began with your heartbeat of love, the colors flowed from your imagination, and the intricacy of the microscopic demonstrates your skill. We confess that we do not honor your work or show our gratitude. We proclaim our handiwork, sing our praises, and seek to enslave creation to our will. Forgive us. Have mercy on us for our betrayal of our call to
4
stewardship. Enable us to live in harmony with creation and in service to your love for this world.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
One: Do you hear that? The Spirit blows in a new day and a new way of living, in right relationship to God and creation. There is hope, for in Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
All: Thanks be to God!

PASSING OF THE PEACE The Jones Family
POSTLUDE Scenes from Childhood Robert Schumann
Psalm 8
O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honour. You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Romans 8: 19-26
For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the
children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its
own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that
the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will
obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know
that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until
now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the
first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption,
the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now
hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if
we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know
how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs
too deep for words.
Luke 24:28-35
As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked
ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying,
‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now
nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the
table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to
them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and
he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, ‘Were not our
hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road,
while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ That same hour they
got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and
their companions gathered together. They were saying, ‘The Lord
has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ Then they told
what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Life at DCPC
Prayer Concerns:
Reid Montgomery died on April 21, 2020. We remember his wife Martha and
son Emmett and their family in our prayers.
Mary Sanders died on Wednesday, April 22. We her son, two daughters, and four
grandchildren in our prayes.
Both families plan memorial services at later dates.
Colin Shaw has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. He received this
diagnosis this week and will begin radiation soon. Please keep his family in your
prayers.
We are praying for you! In addition to our prayers, officers and care givers
from DCPC are calling every one of our households to check in on one another.
Nobody would have wished this pandemic, but we are glad that we have the
means to stay connected by phone and digitally. Don’t forget to follow us on
Facebook, You Tube and at our website dcpc.org.
Mission Update during COVID-19 Pandemic Many of our mission partners are
struggling to care for their clients while at the same time being able to care for
their staff. Many have published updates about how they are facing the realities
of this pandemic. Your mission committees want the congregation to be aware of
the challenges that our partners face so that you can support them with your
prayers, your advocacy, and when possible, your resources. You can read more
here. Each of these ministries is already being supported by DCPC’s mission
dollars. Your giving to the church helps support these ministries, If you would
like to give over and above what the church is already giving you can always
make a direct donation to the organization.
Calling All of You Who Can Sew! The Pines staff is looking for people who can
volunteer to sew cloth surgical masks for our Pines nursing and other staff who
are providing essential daily services to our community. We have some supplies
but future supplies are very uncertain. As you know there is an extreme national
shortage of Personal Protective Equipment for all health care workers. If you, a
family member or friends can help in this meaningful, tangible way please
contact Beth Jewell at [email protected] or at 540-462-7248. She has a
limited supply of kits with pre-cut cloth and helpful instructions. Thank you!

Faith Formation Classes
All Adult Sunday School Classes and mid-week group are now virtually meeting
online either via Zoom or by having content published on the church’s YouTube
Channel. More information is here.
Sunday School on Thursday Night! Screen & Scripture is back on Thursdays at 7:30 pm on Zoom and our goal is to
help you find some connections between scripture and all the movies and shows
we are all consuming at a much higher rate than before! Each week we take a
look at an InLighten Films short film, study the Bible passage it's based on, learn
about a film technique that the film uses, and walk away with some skills in
reading God's word and film. In addition to that, there's lively conversation that
will connect across the generations. Follow this link on Thursday at 7:30 pm to
join us: https://zoom.us/j/937586108
DCPC Stephen Ministers are Here for You DCPC offers a vibrant and thriving
Stephen Ministry program in which our Stephen ministers offer a one on one
listening ministry with their care receivers. If you are feeling levels of stress, or
are experiencing a personal crisis, dealing with health issues, or facing financial
challenges, you may want to consider having a Stephen minister, who will offer a
compassionate, caring and loving presence in your life. Visit DCPC.org and click
on the links to Stephen Ministry. Each Stephen minister has received extensive
training and many have been in the program for years.
Mental Health Ministries As another response to the dramatic changes caused
by coronavirus, DCPC will offer a “Zoom” Resilience and Support Program on
Tuesdays from 7:30pm to 8:30pm through June 9. Using computers or smart
phones, members of the congregation will be able maintain connection with one
another, give and receive support, discuss common concerns, develop solutions
and learn strategies for coping with stressors. The program will be facilitated by
Clinical Psychologist and DCPC member, Dr. Frank Gantz. Needs will be re-
evaluated in June. If interested in joining this online program, please email Frank
directly at [email protected]. He will send you a link to join.
Need for Food Increases As people continue to struggle with job and income
loss, food needs will increase. DCPC will accept food items on the porch of our
Congregation House and will deliver them to one of our area ministries. When
12
you are out getting groceries, feel free to buy non-perishable food items (low
sodium canned vegetables, low-sugar fruit in its own juice, canned meat, pasta,
rice, and corn muffin mix) and drop them off at the Congregation House on the
front porch in the designated area. We will have wipes and hand sanitizer at
the drop off location and ask that if you are there at the same time as
someone else that you keep 6 feet between you and others. Also, please
sanitize your hands before and after the drop off. We recognize that
grocery shopping and feeding the hungry are two essential activities, but
we want you to be safe while you serve others. Donations will be delivered to
either FeedNC (formerly Mooresville Soup Kitchen), Loaves and Fishes at Ada
Jenkins, or Angels and Sparrows. Thank you for your generosity.
