The original ferry service called 'Wisemans Ferry' was approximately 2 kilometres down river from the present day position. The old ferry service was moved in 1829 when the Great North Road was built using convict labour.

370 HMSS Bangate Shearers Cup 1892. Sheffield 1881. Makers Martin & Hall. In 1892, Bangate Station at Walgett N.S.W. & many others were owned by James Tyson, a first generation Australian of transported parents. James Tyson became a most successful pastoralist. His estate was worth more than 2 million pounds. Banjo Patterson wrote a poem about him entitled T.Y.S.O.N. 120 years ago this silver goblet was offered as a prize at at a time when shearers' strikes had almost brought the wool industry to a standstill. The engraved decoration on this cup of sugar cane & foliage in typical colonial style would have been executed in Australia, possibly in Brisbane. From the shearers' strikes came the foundation of the organised labour movement & the Australian Labor Party. That foundation began at 'The Tree Of Knowledge,' Barcaldine, Queensland.

The second Kangaroos Australasian touring team included players from N.S.W., Queensland & New Zealand. Four members of the team were from Souths. Team manager Johnny Quinlan presented Johnny McGrath the larger 9ct (L5cm 17.2g) gold medallion, decorated with 'A' & a kangaroo. The 2nd & 3rd gold medallions are life memberships for J.J. McGrath to Souths & N.S.W. Rugby League Clubs. Dedication engraved verso to the 1st medallion: 'J Quinlan. To J.J. McGrath. As a Souvenir of a Pleasant Tour through England with the Australasian Team 1911-12,' maker Harry Young. 2nd medallion: 9ct & gilt kangaroo with garter and wreath topped with crown.
