Olam Chesed Yibaneh- A Worldof Loving-Kindness will Come.

There are so many ways thatwe can show our love forGod and our community,

two of these include showinggratitude and helping others.Modim anachnu lach, we aregrateful to all the people whoparticipated in our 5779 High

Holiday services. There are so many people whohelped make our services possible and moremeaningful. Thank you to our Torah readers JulieSolberg, Janice Robertson, Susan Ivory, JosephOzer, Carol Ozer, Jan Robertson,MickeyAdelman, and Joey Angel-Field. Thank you also toour English prayer readers Arlene Bailey, JackieGreen, Richard Shapiro,Meryl Zwanger, BillJoseph, Shari Herzfeld, Doris Robin, RonRobertson, Lia Kamhi-Stein, Robin Evans, JoeyAngel-Field, Jerry Schwartz, Susie Kahn-Parker,and Shari Herzfeld. A big thank you also goes to Laurie Averitt who

coordinated our English prayer readers and to JoeyAngel-Field and the ritual committee for theiroversight and support in so many aspects of the HighHolidays services. We express our gratitude to ourshofar blowers who awaken our souls with thesounding of the Shofar, Mark Gersh, Hannah Mossand Joey Angel-Field and to our soloists SarahArellanes, Sarah Evans, Lori McKenna,MichaelChong, and Susan Rooks. Thank you to our greetersLarry Alpert,Arthur Glazier,Vic Herzfeld, Dulceand Rachel Dubin, and Lia Kamhi-Stein. Thank youto Rena and Carol for all the behind the scenes workthey did for our High Holiday services. A big thank you to the singers of our newly formed

youth choir “Shir Joy,” Sarah Arellanes and HannahStein whose voices have added so much joy andmeaning to our services. Thank you to our Sweet Singers of David adult

choir who added so much beauty, holiness, and heartto our holidays, including Michael Adelman, JoeyAngel-Field, Lindy Bornstein, Michael Chong,Linda Elyad, Sarah Evans, Lori McKenna, ReneMichaels, Amy Ollendorf, Joseph Ozer, CourtneyParisi, Susan Rooks, Jennifer Rose, and DianeSmiarowski. Our gratitude is also extended to SteveBermann for serving as our rehearsal accompanistand conducting The Sweet Singers of David. Looking forward to our next holiday Chanukah, I

wanted to touch on a way that we can help others. Thefrenzy of ‘Holiday Shopping’ impacts and magnifiesour tradition of Chanukah gifting. Just as theMaccabees struggled with the influence of Greekculture on their lives, we modern-day Jews alsowrestle with how much to let secular culture influenceour daily lives. Reform Judaism has created a wisecompromise: Ner Shel Tzedakah, the Candle ofRighteousness Project. The initiative encouragespeople to devote the sixth night of Chanukah tolearning about poverty and donating gifts (or money)to organizations helping those living in poverty. Through our small acts of chesed, loving-kindness,

we can together imagine an olam chesed yibaneh, aworld of loving-kindness will come. As we continueinto the year 5779 together may this be a year inwhich we continue to show our love for God and ourcommunity through gratitude and helping others. If you are a teen or have a teen who is interested in

joining our youth choir, Shir Joy, or are an adultinterested in joining our adult choir, The SweetSingers of David, please contact me, Cantor Lilah, [email protected] or (626) 287-9994.

UPDATES FROM OUR RELIGIOUS SCHOOLGal Kessler Rohs

As we wrapped up the HighHolidays, with a culminationof Simchat Torah’s

celebration, I think about how somany of us TBD friends, joinedtogether in the past few weeks, andon many levels, to form a unitedcommunity. One of these examples was during

Sukkot. Men’s Club, with theleadership of Bill Joseph, gathered

together, to build TBD's Sukkah foundations, while JasonMoss’ Haskala students, helped put up the fronds. They didso collaboratively, and with mentorship from the men of theMen’s Club. Meanwhile, Jason explained to his students, that the mitzvah that they were doing, of collaborating withthe Men’s Club, was bringing on another mitzvah for thewhole community, of sitting in the sukkah. This notion ofmitzvah goreret mitzvah (one good deed leads to another)was paralleled to the one Domino pushing another affect byRabbi Keara Stein, who demonstrated the effect to herstudents using Dominoes. On Sunday last, our youngest of students made

decorations for the Sukkah, and used the help of their 3rdand 4th grader friends from Miss Doris Robin's class to

hang all up. Susan Grodsky’s class sat in the Sukkah, onthe laps of their buddies in Rabbi Keara’s class, andCynthia Arndt’s toddlers rode their push cars into theshade of the Sukkah. Sarah Evan’s class crafted the fourspecies from recyclable material, for us to perform themitzvah of shake shake shaking the lulav. Meanwhile MissDoris explained to her students, who then passed along themessage to the community, about how each part of the fourspecies is related to parts of the body. Once the Sukkah wasup, decorated, shaded, and set up, our youth group TOVCHAI, with the leadership of Lauren and Joey, dined aftertheir Havdalah ritual together. Adult Hebrew education'sJan Robertson kindly fed the team with delicacies ofcakes, salads, beverages and more. The building, decorating, shading, setting up, nourishing

and arranging for the erection of the Sukkah, was indeedteam work. This is a reflection of Rabbi Lachtman’swords in his interview for October’s JLife magazine abouthis honoring. Rabbi says: “Our lives are enriched byaffiliation and relationships, and when we share ideas andideals, we are not a uniform community but a unitedcommunity.” May we share many more moments of talent

appreciation, including the work and laughter of children atTBD, ledor vador!

I’m Erica Bradley, a seniorat Arcadia High School, andI’m proud to celebrate my

Bat Mitzvah with family andfriends on November 9th. I’m sure you’re wondering,

“Why wait until 18 to have aBat Mitzvah?”I decided to wait until I

turned 18 because I wanted tolink my coming of age as anadult both in the Jewish

community and legally. Some of my hobbies include mediocre karaoke, video

games, and last-minute makeup. My Bat Mitzvah represents a culmination of what I’ve

learned at Temple Beth David’s Religious and HebrewSchool, and from attending services. At first, I had a long list of possibilities for my Bat

Mitzvah Project but I knew I wanted to positively affectthe community through hands on work. Eventually, I optedto volunteer at the Pasadena Humane Society since I enjoycaring for and bonding with animals.Last but not least, I would like to thank my mom, all my

teachers, Rabbi Lachtman, Cantor Schwartz, CantorSugarman, and Bernice Blacher for helping me reach thisimportant milestone in my life.

ticed we have renamed the FoodBank Fund to the Lorraine Bern-stein Memorial Food Bank Fund.Lorraine was tireless in her questthat no one should go hungry andthat children and seniors should beable to go to their cupboards andfind something nourishing to eat.She was an inspiration to me per-sonally and to many others in thecommunity. ANIMALS TOO ARE JEWISHLYWARM& RELEVANTElle Rohs, 7th grade Religious School student

1974 Confirmation Class with Rabbi Angel and Student Rabbi Mark Goodman

There are many things that I love. Some of thosethings are animals. I love animals because they canlisten to people. I don’t mean take orders, I mean if

there is something you want to talk about but aren’t com-fortable talking about, you can confide with animals be-cause they won’t go around telling everyone. You can trustanimals, to keep your secrets confidential. I also love animals because we can learn from them. For

example, the tiger never backs down. What you can learnfrom that is when you think something is right, stand up forit. Or if you fail at something, don’t give up. Fish can teachteamwork because they stay together in a group. Dolphinsteach bravery because they sometimes help swimmers whoare being attacked by sharks. Recently, a surfer from Cali-fornia was drowning from a shark attack. A few dolphinshelped him swim back to the beach, and the surfer survived.Even some bugs can teach people how to adapt because theyneed to adapt when there is rain or temperature change. Peo-ple should adapt to new situations just like the bugs.I am really heartbroken that people eat animals because

the idea of killing an animal and eating it is unfair. I feellike the animals are losing their family for the benefit ofpeople to eat. To me it is like a cow family or chicken fam-ily eating a human. I love animals yet I still eat them. Thisis because I am about 30 pounds underweight and a lotshorter than my peers. My doctor suggested I eat fattymeat. I really wish I wouldn’t have to eat animals becauseevery time I see meat it makes me sad.

This summer when I went to Germany, we went to acow farm and there were many calves (baby cows). All thecalves had been taken away from their moms and put inseparate cages. They all seemed really sad and lonely somy mom, brother, sister and I went into their cages and laiddown with them. All the baby cows were female. Thefarmer said it was because the male calves were sent to an-other farm where they would be fed a lot until they were fatenough. Then they would kill the cows and sell them.Imagine being taken away from your mother when you

were a baby and raised just to be eaten. This is very sad tome. I not only like being with animals, but I also like help-ing them. I have two cats, and I let them out every day, bring them home in the evening, and feed them. I also takecare of my neighbors’ dog every time they go on vacation. I want to thank Atticus Blatt, my kind Sunday School

teacher from last year because she had us do a project onhelping animals in a shelter. We made blankets, toys andmore for the animals. She also arranged a field trip to theshelter so we could see the animals. I also wish to thankRabbi Lachtman for always saving animals that needhelp. I think animal lives are equal to the lives of people. So please, if for some reason you have to evacuate, and Ihope you don’t, please take your pets with you and don’tleave them to die.For animal advocacy, to join our animal committee, or

to be part of our animal committee, please be in touch withAtticus Blatt, animal committee chair at TBD.
