DAVIDTO STOP WASTING YOUR DAYS WITH THIS STUPID CRACK
ELLENWELL, IF THE CRACK NEVER GOES AWAYTHOUGH I’D RATHER IT DOESI’M PRETTY SURE THINGS WILL OKAYAND WE’LL BE JUST FINE BECAUSEIT’S JUST YOU AND ME.
(By now, Ellen and David are both standing directly beneath the crack, not minding the dripping water. Suddenly the leak stops)
DAVID(Looking up)
That’s interesting...
ELLENWhat is it?
DAVIDThe ceiling.
ELLEN(Calmly)
Another crack?
DAVIDNo! The leak. It looks like it stopped!
ELLENI’m sure that’s just....
(She looks up and sees that the crack has stopped leaking.)
Oh.
DAVID(He raises his hands toward the ceiling to feel for water.)
It stopped.
ELLEN(Seeing if the leak will resume)
Wait...
60.
(It doesn’t. With quiet amazement.)Oh, my God... Why did it stop?
DAVIDI have no idea.
ELLENI don’t know what to say...
(She stands silently in shock for a moment, then laughs with joy and hugs David.)
David, it stopped leaking! It stopped!
DAVIDNow you can just call one more builder to patch the crack, right? And then it will all be over.
ELLENNo. I don’t think I’ll be calling any more construction workers.
DAVIDYou’re just going to leave the crack?
ELLENMaybe. For now.
DAVIDBut you said it yourself, we can’t just leave the crack there.
ELLENI know. I just don’t think we need any more of the same.
DAVIDMaybe we can patch it ourselves!
ELLENHow?
DAVIDI’ve had a ton of practice with power tools. And we’ve seen enough people try. I’m sure if we bought a book or something we could figure it all out. I think we can do it.
ELLENOh, David, I think we can too.
