Stay Active Winter is a unique opportunity to connect with our families, community and the environment. While thelandscape may seem to lay dormant under the layers of Minnesotan snow, the Minneapolis park system does not hibernate

during the winter. Our parks offer a wide range of activities and venues that will keep everyone active and healthy.

Outdoor enthusiasts can play and keep fit during these chilly months on our award-winning rinks, trails and hills. People of all

ages find our recreation centers to be a haven for a multitude of programs, from arts and crafts to fitness classes. For families

with school-age kids, the recreation centers are open and offer activities during all Minneapolis Public Schools release days.

Our commitment to provide easily accessible, affordable and fun activities was nationally recognized in June 2013 as

Minneapolis earned the first-ever five park bench rating on The Trust for Public Lands ParkScore index, finishing first

Larry Fitzgerald, Jr. and Riddell Donates 1,000 Helmets to Youth Football Program

MINNEAPOLIS (July 8, 2013) -- Minneapolis native and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver LarryFitzgerald, Jr. andRiddell, the helmet industry leader, teamed together and donated 1,000 new

Riddell Revolution Speed Classic Youth football helmets to the Minneapolis Park and

Recreation Board's (MPRB) youth football program.

The event held at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park featured a welcome from MPRB

Superintendent Jayne Miller, remarks from Riddell President Dan Arment and the Riddell

leadership staff and MPRB Recreation Committee Chair and Commissioner at Large Bob Fine.

The event also included football activities with Fitzgerald and MPRB youth football players,

refreshments, free t-shirts for the youth and ice cream treats. Additionally, Riddell presented asampling of the different colors of helmets donated to the Park Board football teams.

The fact that the event was held at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park was one of special

importance to Fitzgerald. It was at that park where Fitzgerald played his first football game as ayoung boy in Minneapolis.

"Ever since I first started playing football as a young child at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.Park in South Minneapolis, I have had a passion for the game," said Fitzgerald. "The teamwork,

the camaraderie and the intense physical competition make it an exciting game to play. But the

longer I play at the highest level, the more I understand the importance of playing wearingproper protective equipment."

Fitzgerald was looking for ways to help the MPRB youth football program when he discoveredthat Park Board recreation staff was already meeting with Riddell to explore investing in new

protective football equipment. Seeing an opportunity to help the same program that gave him his

start more than 20 years ago, Fitzgerald collaborated with Riddell to join forces and make a moresizeable donation that ensures all of the kids participating in the program would have access to

    new, innovative helmet technology.

"We are so grateful to Larry and Riddell for their generosity," said Minneapolis Park andRecreation Board President John Erwin. "Thanks to their donation, 1,000 Minneapolis youth will

be outfitted with state-of-the-art head protection using the same technology used at football's

    elite level."

In 2012, nearly 900 Minneapolis youth ages 9-14 are playing football through the MPRB youth

    football program.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH ANTI-DRINKING MESSAGE

The T2T Campaign Ramps Up Just in Time For Prom

ROBBINSDALE (April 20, 2012)-- Its prom season. And in addition to picking out dresses

and ordering tuxes, students from the northwest metro have been implementing an innovative

campaign to get parents and teens talking about underage drinking. Bright pink signs with T2T

on them have been popping up across the northwest suburbs. Its all part of an effort,

spearheaded by a North Memorial program called Partnership for Change, which focuses on

preventing underage drinking and drug use.

On Monday, April 23, the T2T campaign will ramp up at Maple Grove High School when

students blanket the entire front lawn of the campus with hot-pink signs, spreading the T2T

message. What does T2T stand for? For the past four weeks, a new T2T message has been

reveled through the campaigns social media outlets: Time 2 Think, Time 2 Teach, Talk 2 Teens

and Teen 2 Teen. The fifth and final message will be revealed this week, just in time for Maple

Groves prom which is April 28.

Teen drinking and drug use too often is considered to be a teenage cultural norm on prom night

and graduation. The T2T campaign along with Partnership for Change focuses attention on

providing practical solutions to prevent teen drinking and drug use during this spring season.

We have implemented the campaign for the first time in northwest Hennepin County, said

LeeAnn Mortensen, Partnership for Change Coordinator. The campaign is an important

reminder during the upcoming prom and graduation seasons to keep students safe.

Over the past several weeks members of the T2T campaign have been spreading their message

throughout the community through lawn signs, flyers, website and social media directly to

students and schools. The schools involved in the campaign include Maple Grove Senior High

School, Osseo Senior High School and Park Center Senior High School.

Yard signs have popped up all over the community, including in residents yards, at the Osseo

Police Station and even in the yard of the District 279 Superintendant, said Mortensen. The

    campaign is really gaining momentum.

Mortensen also adds that the overall goal of Partnership for Change is to help mobilize parents,

youth and community leaders to take a stand against drug and alcohol use in NorthwestHennepin County. In the end we hope to protect the health of the families in our communities

    and ultimately save lives.

Heartbeat in a Bottle: Low-Tech, High-TouchBy: David Christians

North Memorial Medical CenterNew Heights Friday Newsletter

    June 1, 2012

In September of 2011 North Memorial Medical Center initiated the Heartbeat in a Bottleprogram lead by Nora Krahn, RN, Homecare and Hospice Liaison, and Greg Bodin, Manager of

Pastoral Care. The Heartbeat in a Bottle is offered to the family members of patients in the

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) who are not expected to live long after extubation or after beingremoved from life-support. The family receives an electrocardiogram (EKG) strip of their loved

ones heartbeat, name and date inside a small bottle and a poem written by Krahn and 5

    Southwest.

I think just the prospect of being able to offer this helps bridge the gap of the family moving

from grief to acceptance of the loss of a loved one, said Krahn. The Heartbeat in a Bottle is

unique to that specific loved one. Its like carrying a bit of their life with you.

Several Health Unit Coordinators (HUCs) have expressed to Krahn that families with loved ones

in the ICU really appreciate Heartbeat and love it the families feel cared for. The nurses

understand that what this program offers is a heart thing not a head thing. While much of theICU is surrounded by highly technical equipment the simplistic yet powerful Heartbeat in a

Bottle creates a definite contrast it is low-tech but high-touch.

The feedback were getting from families is that they love [the program], Krahn said. Nurses

love [Heartbeat in a Bottle] because its something they can do when theyre taking away life

support its something that they can give.

Krahn knew from day one that the Heartbeat in a Bottle program would make a strong impact

with families and staff members of North Memorial Medical Center. Thats because Krahn first

received a Heartbeat in a Bottle in 2010 of her grand-daughter, Kendra, who was only 23years-old.

Kendra was a dedicated and inspired nurse who loved her career. In 2008 her career ended whenshe was struck by a bullet to her brain however through determination, support and hard work

Kendra regained many of her losses. Unfortunately in October of 2010 she died as a result of a

fall and subsequent massive sub-dermal hematoma. Krahn carries Kendras Heartbeat in a

    Bottle with her every day.

Krahn was touched when a nurse at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia

presented her with a Heartbeat in a Bottle. She was so moved that Krahn decided to call

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital to ask if she could bring that same program back to NorthMemorial. The nurse in Norfolk was very enthusiastic that her Heartbeat idea was being

    started at another hospital.

  • 8/12/2019 David L. Christians - Professional Digital Portfolio

    16/21

Norfolk Hospital didnt even think their Heartbeat in a Bottle was a program, said Krahn. It

really was just one nurse that was completely responsible for finding the bottles and getting

    everything prepared for the family.

Since the programs inception in 2011 over 130 Heartbeat in a Bottle viles have been given to

families. Both Krahn and Bodin are very hopeful of the impact this new program can have onboth the families and employees of North Memorial Medical Center.

For a family to leave a hospital without their loved one but to have a Heartbeat in Bottle gift

is caring to a whole family unit and not just the patient, said Krahn. You can give excellentcare to the patient and ignore the family and Ive seen that and have experienced it happen. But

when you look beyond the patient to the family and offer them care thats remarkable.

Heartbeat in a Bottl e Poem:

Your heartbeat I hold in my hand. A simple strip of paper filled with your precious life.

The heart is the core of our being.

The place where we hold our joy and sorrow, our courage, or disappointments, our love our

    loyalty and our faith.

Holding the image of your heart fills me with the special essence of you.

Though your heart no longer beats, this reminder permeates my heart, and I will carry you with

    me each day.

    In loving memory.
