ORIGINAL NOTES - 1980
was originally released on LP by Sugar Hill Records in 1980. This edition includes the original 16 tracks, combined with 13 previously unpublished tracks and my first recorded mandolin instrumental, “Mandolin King Rag” from the Even Dozen Jug Band LP, released on Elektra Records in 1964. Among these performances are the earliest recordings of my first original compositions, “Cedar Hill”, “Fanny Hill”, “Opus 57”, “Opus 38” and my first and only banjo tune — “New York Ramble”, played by Winnie Winston and later renamed “Dawggy Mt. Breakdown” which became the theme for “Car Talk” recorded with Earl Scruggs.
This music is presented chronologically, spanning the decade between 1963-1973. I was fortunate to play with so many fabulous musicians during that time, for which I’ll always be grateful. I hope you enjoy these musical memories as much as I had making them. — David “Dawg” Grisman, January 2022
This project is fondly dedicated to three dear friends, no longer with us, who inspired the early Dawg — Winnie Winston, Bill Keith and Fred Weisz.
