dave brubeck - jazz impressions of the usa (pc, 46, wc)
DESCRIPTION
jazz estados unidosTRANSCRIPT

A music notebook is as important tothe traveling musician, as a sketch padis to the artist. When lulled by thesounds of travel, the drone of theplane, the rumble of the bus, the clackof the rails, or even the hiss of theradiator in a strange hotel room, themes suddenly spring into conscious-ness. If a sketchbook is handy, theelusive idea is captured to be develolled, arranged or changed. ",Jazz Impres-sions" is a group of compositionscreated in just such a manner, fromnotebook scribblings made while ontour. It was recorded on three dif-ferent dates, in three different cit ies(New York, Hollywood and Oakland)as our it inerary permitted.
As many popular songs have beentransformed by jazz into almost dif-ferent tunes - different in emotionalcontent, rhythmic conception, and mel-odic development - so these sketchesby the Quartet vary according to themood of the group and the individualinterpretations of the soloist. Thethemes themselves, which are but theskeletal framework for improvisation, occasionally use musical devices whichare typical of certain regions in theUnited States. Although these pieceshave their moments of humor, at notime do we attempt to satirize the in-digenous music which served as in-spiration for these impressions. Muchof the folk music of America has be-come integrated into jazz, and con-versely, jazz has affected folk musicitrself, so that today we find endlesscross-influences.
Ode to a Cowboy is an example ofgrou;? creation, after the theme hasbeen presented and the idea discussed.Paul Desmond's alto becomes theplaintive voice of a singing colvboy, and Norman Bates' bass, his guitar

accompaniment. The tango rhythmwas Norman's invention, his contribu-tion to the developed composition. JoeMorello's sensitive drumming sug-gests the presence of the cowboy's solecorhpanion. A typical cowboy chordprogression is intrinsic in the melody.
Summer Song is a theme recalledfrom one of my own improvisedchoruses, which evoked memories ofpeaceful golden summers away fromthe city. The lyrics my wife and Iwrote to the bridge of Summer Songsuggest the picture the music hopes toconvey.
"I hear laughter from theswimmin 'hole.
Kids are fishin' with a willow pole.Boats are driftin' round the bend. Why must summer ever end?"
Yond,er for Two was conceived as atribute to the early New Orleans jazzmusicians. The written portion of thistune retains some of the two-beatflavor and is intended to express thehappy, joyous feeling so typical ofthis era.
History of a Boy Scout (named byour own wit-master Paul Desmondwith an elaborate salaam in the direc-tion of Stravinsky and Histoire duSoldat'l is more serious in intent thanthe title implies. It is a mixture ofhumor and reverence that is so typical
of the American G.I. It contains someof the sky rocket spirits of a Fourthof July parade, but there is an under-current of hallowed respect for themen of Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Ar-dennes, Wake, the Bulge and Korea.Listen for the canon (by the iano)where the left hand answers the right, one measure behind and an octave be-Iow.
PIan Song was written while travel-i ng on a bus somewhere be tweenYankton, South Dakota, and IowaCity. The insistent thump of the bassand the mechanical rhythm of thedrums portray the monotonous revolu-tion of wheels upon a journey whichhas no end. The openness of the pianoevokes the bleak expanse of plains, broken only by the sight of an occa-sional farm house. The alto is againa voice of loneliness.
Cu.rtain Time is like a pencil sketchof Broadway, a mere suggestion ofwhat the full-color painting shouldbe with strings, brass and the fullcomplement of a theatre orchestra. Allwe have here of the real pit band isthe soft tinkle of the triangle in theopening bars. The rest of the orches-tration is for you to paint as the fourof us try to conjure some of the ex-citement and glamour of a Broadwaymusical at curtain time.
Sounds of tlte .Loop introduces theremarkable melodic drumming of JoeMorello. His forceful, individual styleof drumming has notably influcnccdthe over-all "sound" of the Quartetsince he joined us in the fall of '56.From the hoof beats and whinnys ofOde to a Coutboy to the military ca-dences of History of a Boy Scout, Joehas contributed mightily to these jazzimpressions, but the Sounds o the

Loop are strictly Morello's-the clang-ing of the el train, the roar of thetraffic, the hubub of Chicago at therush hour are all reproduced by thisone-man battery.
Home o,t Lq,st was actually recordedin my home at the completion of atour. It attempts to convey my innerpeace as I look again upon familiarlandmarks-the calm of the Bay, thequiet of the hills, the warmth of thefireside, the love of the family - allfelt with increased poignancy after mylong absence. The wanderer has re-turned.
