Chairman’s MessageChairman’s MessageChairman’s MessageChairman’s Message There is no such thing as an “off year” for San Diego Republicans.

The battle for the future of America does not take a break. The professional left is more motivated than

ever. The radical leftists that have hijacked the modern Democrat Party apparently did not learn anything

from the most recent election about how “middle America” feels. Instead they are doubling down on the

most radical, far left policies of the likes of Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

The Democrat Party of JFK is no more.

As former California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring is fond of saying “The side with the most ac-

tive and passionate grass roots activists usually wins.” Well, under President Obama the Tea Party move-

ment activated millions of Americans with common sense demands which won favor with voters as Republi-

cans flipped one chamber of Congress, and then the other, and finally the presidency.

There is no time to rest. The other side is energized so we need to stay ever vigilant and active – even more

so than before. The good news is that with Democrats doubling down on policies which were soundly re-

jected and acting more and more radical and unreasonable, they are ceding the vast political middle ground

where most Americans find themselves. Chairman’s Message (continued pg 3)

Although the human being is a complex and multifac-eted species, man is driv-en by basic instincts that are innate from the begin-ning of time. The survi-vor instinct is one of those basic forces that move the human race. Throughout history, no matter the pressures that push man down, the hard-ships or adverse environ-ment, the disease that at-tacks without scruples, humankind pushes ever forward searching and striving for a better life, better circumstances and a better existence for the

next generation.

The basic flaw in the left’s solution to poverty is the neutering and ignorance of this basic instinct. By removing the pressing need to find a way to sur-vive due to the fact that the government will pro-vide for food, housing and medical care “for free”, the left removes the need for the individual to search out solutions to their every day needs. The government will take care of them. The result is an enduring state of victimhood. Once a vic-

tim, the fundamental sur-vival instinct is rendered

barren.

The impetus for a job, an education and self worth become unfamiliar con-cepts. The desire to reach forward and move upward fall prey to the idea of entitlement. Once entitled, it is a painful pro-cess to cut the strings of “free stuff”. The next generation is handed the crutches of dependency to complete the vicious cicle. Instinct (continued pg 2)

Republicans in HistoryRepublicans in HistoryRepublicans in HistoryRepublicans in History

This Republican in History found her life vocation at a very early age. At only ten years old, a young Clara Barton began treatment for her brother David, after he fell from the roof of a barn, result-ing in a life threatening injury. Doctors had given up on the welfare of her brother, stating that he would never be able to recover. However, with careful work and quick learning, Clara was able to nurse David to a full recovery. Barton showed a clear passion for nursing even at a young age, developing it into a career as she be-

came the founder of the American Red Cross.

Clara Barton was born on Christmas Day, 1821. She began as a school teacher at seventeen and eventually became a clerk at the U.S. Patent Office in the nation’s capital, facing severe discrimina-tion in both jobs because she was a woman. The Civil War began while she was working in Washington D.C. Wanting to serve her country, Barton began treating war victims arriving at a local railway station where she nursed about 40 men on her first night. She rediscovered her passion for nursing as she learned proper medical techniques and various

treatment skills.

Barton would carry crates of supplies to the front lines to wounded victims on both sides of the war, establishing a large support system for donations. She was appointed by Union General Benjamin Butler as the “woman in charge” of the hospitals at the front of the Army of the James. According to legend, Barton was nearly killed when a bullet tore through the sleeve of her dress without hitting her, and killed her patient. People referred to her as the “American Nightingale”

and the “Angel of the Battlefield.”

After the war, she went on speaking tours across America, attracting large audiences interested in her war stories. She used this opportunity to meet influential people such as Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, and became involved in the women’s suffrage movement and civil rights. After discovering thousands of unopened letters from families searching for the burial place of their loved ones or soldiers missing in action, she opened the Office of Missing Soldiers to assist families in their quest. She had thousands of Confederate soldiers located and properly

buried from the Andersonville prison camp and as well as more than 22,000 Union soldiers.

Her doctor told her to take a break; Barton was mentally and physically exhausted from her busy lifestyle. She closed the Office of Missing Soldiers and traveled to Europe on vacation for rest and relaxation. Barton was hoping to have time off, but, while in Geneva, Switzerland, she was introduced to the Red Cross organization, originally founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering (the red cross symbol is associated with Switzerland’s flag, but with inverted colors). As an active mem-ber in their Red Cross, Barton helped prepare military hospitals at the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. She also assisted German authorities in supplying work to the poor in

Strasbourg after the Siege of Paris.

Inspired by her experience in the wars, Barton returned to the United States with a quest to have the International Committee of the Red Cross recognized by the U.S. government. After many years, Barton succeeded during Clara Barton (Continued pg 3)

Instinct (continued

from pg 1)

The solution of taking from one person and simply handing it to an-other is a profound viola-tion of both. The first

person’s sense of justice and his instinct to aspire to be more has been breached and the second has been made to lose sight of the horizon and the way out. And the

poor remain ever poor.

Sacramento should heed

this lesson.

Chairman’s Message (continued from pg 1)

This is our opportunity to reach out to these fellow citizens with our message of smaller, more efficient, constitutional government, lower taxes,

entrepreneurship, patriotism, etc. The time is right. 2018 will be here before we know it and we need to stay on offense.

The best way to stay informed about opportunities to be involved is making sure you are connected with us on Facebook (just search for “Republican Party of San Diego County”) and that you are getting our periodic emails (sign up at www.SanDiegoRepublicans.org). Clara Barton (continued from pg 2)

President Chester Arthur’s administration, and she became the President of the American branch of the Red Cross. In the organi-

zation, she aided with refugees and prisoners of war during the Spanish-American War and beyond.

Barton embodies the Republican spirit in her desire to help and care for all people. Her strength and resilience, especially during a

time when the obstacles were great, shows the power of the individual in changing our country.
