DATES TO REMEMBER
Our newsletter is printed and proudly sponsored by
Late last year and then again very
recently I sent out a notice and a
survey seeking your support in
opposing the shifting of our
school’s decile rating from a
Decile 1 to a Decile 2 school. We
needed at least a 70% return from
our post out to have any chance of
a review by the Ministry of
Education. Thank you to those
parents/caregivers who have
returned their surveys however
you can imagine my disappointed
in the 35% return rate even after a
second post out to parents. We
have done all that we could do as
a school to alert our community to
the pending loss of funding and
the serious impact that this will
have on our abi l i ty to
provide for the needs of our
students in literacy and
numeracy.
Attendance plus effort equals
achievement, is the catch cry of
our school. I am concerned about
the number of students who do
not appreciate the importance of
regular attendance and have
developed patterns of truancy.
Our Attendance Officer Wehe
Hancy has been worked off her
feet visiting these families for us.
Please ensure that your child does
not take time off unless it is an
emergency.
Youth Worker in Secondary
School ( YWiSS). I want to
remind families that we have Ms
Jane Hughson in the school who is
available to work alongside you
and your child in matters
pertaining to their schooling.
Please ensure that you have the
30 March marked on your
calendar for our Parent, Student
Teacher (PST) Conference. This is
the first opportunity to discuss
your child’s progress at school to
date. John Paitai, Principal
A Message from
our Principal E nga iwi, e nga karangatan-
ga maha, te iti me te rahi,
tena koutou, tena tatou
katoa.
You may have noticed the
events being posted on our
roadside notice board
constantly changing this
term, an indication of the
hive of activities our
s tudents have been
engaged in. Alongside their
regular classes some
s t u d e n t s a r e a l s o
attending North Tech
Farming and Automotive
Academy courses. Others
have been placed in local
industries through our
Gateway work experience
courses.
In the sporting arena teams
are representing our school
in a wide variety of sports
and on the cultural scene
our Kapa Haka has been
preparing for the Ahureka o
Ngati Hine Festival where
they performed last Friday
and for the Tai Tokerau
Secondary Schools Kapa
Haka Festival to be held in
Opononi 31 March to 2
April.
Thank you for your
support in all of these
activities and especially for
Athletics Day. I want to
acknowledge those who
have volunteered to coach
teams, to be managers or
drivers. Without your
involvement we simply
cannot provide these
experiences for our
students.
Got Homework?
Need to do some extra study?
The BOIC Library is now open after school
on

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE VISITS
FOR YEAR 9 STUDENTS
Starting soon, Trish Watson the District
Health Nurse for the District Health Board
will commence health screening for all
students who are in Year 9. The Nurse will
interview each student about their health
and wellbeing. The discussion with the
Nurse will cover topics such as:
Visits to health services such as the GP
Health factors relating to home, school & friends
Interests outside of school
Education and advice on drugs, alcohol & sexual health
A Vision Hearing Technician will conduct
a vision and hearing screen. Every
student is asked for their consent before
an assessment is undertaken, and has the
right to refuse if they choose to. Parents
can also withdraw their child from the
screening programme by contacting the
school and requesting that they do not
participate. We want to identify any health
needs that students may have so that we
can support families in providing services
to meet them, and to ensure that students
are in class ready and able to learn.
This is a Ministry of Health led initiative.
For more information please contact Trish
Watson on 021 432 081 or Whaea Annette
at the school on 09 404 1055
30th March (all day)
This term we will not be writing an Interim Report for your child.
Instead we strongly recommend you come along with your child
to the Conferencing Day, to discuss your child’s progress to date.
If you have not had an appointment time confirmed with the
Form Teacher, please call the school on (09) 4041055 and an
appointment will be arranged. If you wish to make an
appointment with the Dean- please also email, or call the Office.
This is the time to have all your questions and or concerns
answered.
There will be refreshments available in the Staff Room all day.
There will also be information available on NCEA (L1-3) and on
Vocational Pathways, which you are free to take with you.
Zorina Wigglesworth
Deputy Principal- Curriculum Structure
The school would like any parent who would be interested in
acting as a mentor, for students who may be “at risk” in
terms of failing to gain enough credits to pass their NCEA, to
come along to a training session on the 30th March.
As a Community Champion your role would be to make regular
contact with 3 to 4 students, to encourage them with their studies,
to point out the importance of completing assignments to a high
standard and to stay focused on the goal of gaining those 80
credits by the end of the year.
The school provides the training free of charge.
On 30th March (Parent/Student/Teacher Conference Day) we
will have Darlia Walker and Jaqi Brown delivering the
information you will need to take up this important role for the
students in your community. You are welcome to come along and
see what it all entails first before you commit to this role.
