Principal’s Message

Congratulations KPS All 639 students at Kingsville Primary are fortunate to be IB Learners. They attend a school which is both a well regarded Victorian Government school and, one authorised to offer a program of the International Baccalaureate Organization. That program is the “Primary Years Programme”, a curriculum framework for international primary education. Looking back Kingsville began its journey to authorisation back in 2006 and became fully authorised in 2009. That required school council, staff, students and community at that time to make a commitment to the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. and share developments and improvement actions. Kingsville took part in such an evaluation over 3 days this week. This involved a range of stakeholders within the school community and who seized the opportunity to share their knowledge and understandings regarding the PYP. Thank you to

KPS staff

the most important stakeholders of all – our students

parent team members Heidi Germaine, Tracey Doherty, Terry Cumming, Carina Ford, Kylie Artavilla, Moira Junge and Kate Simnett

school council members – Glen Yates, Grant Philpots and Clare De Graaf

student leaders – Scarlett Gunn, Takdanai

McCleod-Smith, Tessa Millington, Stefan Holmes, Grace Droogleever, Saul Austin, Maddison Long, Annika Crees, Edith Dillon, Alex Fullerton and Sam Cookson

members of the school leadership and administration team - Jeff McDonald, Blagma Veljanoska, Sharyn Fletcher and Betty Petrovski

Peter Ritchie – Peter is one of our Assistant

Principals but is also our full time PYP coordinator. Peter’s passion for the role and the PYP has ensured a very successful evaluation for Kingsville.

Moving forward Inside the front door there is a large display board with a heading of ‘At Kingsville we strive to be’. This provides key information about the PYP program and also displays the Kingsville Primary School mission statement and the IB mission statement. There is also a very attractive framed Certificate of Authorization – Certifical d’autorisation. I ask all parents to view this when they come into the school, pause and take a few minutes to refresh their knowledge about what we are collectively working towards and striving to be. Huge excitement Message to the school community from the principal and school council president It is with great pleasure that we announce that this year we will see the arrival and installation of a major new piece of play equipment for our students. The Kingsville Primary School School Council approved some funding towards the cost of this equipment in the 2017 budget. After much consideration the provider was determined to be adventure+. This company provides play equipment

to a large number of Australian schools and, is known for its high quality products. Taking into account the schools ‘Grounds Concept Plan’ and the Playground Improvement and Replacement initiative, a decision was then made regarding what this new piece of equipment would be. The piece chosen is a significant one in both size and cost. It is seen as a major component of the overall Replacement and Renewal Plan and is a steel framed, rope climbing structure with a tunnel slide, scramble net, a 4.5m bridge, climbing rope and ladder. A photo has been included in this newsletter and we are working towards a larger display in a key position in the school. While this first piece will be positioned in the current area of the senior playground, it should be seen as just the starting point i.e. stage 1 of an overall 3-5 year renewal project. This project will see ongoing playground and outside learning space development across junior and senior current playground areas. It will also incorporate the development of a number of other active and passive outdoor spaces. The total cost of this central piece is just under $96,000. This is a big investment and it is important to note that the government does not provide any specifically tagged funding for playground equipment. Historically money has been raised by fundraising teams or gained by grants or donations. This year school council is able to put $60,000 towards the cost of the equipment and this has been included within the 2017 Buildings and Grounds budget area. Where will the remaining $36,000 come from? 1. Parent Voluntary Financial contributions – as

outlined in the information provided to every Kingsville family this year school council determined that all Voluntary Financial Contributions made by parents, during 2017 would go directly to support The Playground Improvement and Replacement Initiative

2. Other donations or grants – the suggested

contribution from each family is $60.00. If every Kingsville family chose to contribute this amount we would gain just under $28,000.

So far out of our 445 families we have had 17% make a contribution with a total of $5,620.00. Thank you to these families, your contribution is greatly appreciated

It is always important to acknowledge that these contributions are voluntary however, School Council is hopeful that that percentage will increase during the remainder of this year. We know from experience Kingsville families are very generous and supportive.

This year any contributions that are made will go directly to this much needed resource which will benefit children now and for many years to come. Guidance/suggestions

do not be restricted by the $60 suggestion, there have been families in the past who have made a decision to contribute more than the suggested amount and of course any additional contributions would assist greatly

spread the word and help out by mentioning this to any past Kingsville families you know or, prospective families as they may wish to make a contribution as well

if you have any contacts or ideas for donations from other associations or groups please let us know

current Kingsville students may also wish to contribute a little from their ‘private sources of income’ – pocket money or other and of course this could be reflected in parents donations

When will the big day arrive? The major components of the ‘mothership’ are manufactured in Germany and will soon be making their sea journey to Australia. We are expecting full installation to be completed mid November so, a great end of year celebration opportunity. Kath Ginnane Principal and Glen Yates School Council President

Well done year 6 students and some Foundation helpers The task at assembly last Friday was to as quickly as possible arrange the collection of letters and numbers to read Happy Birthday Kingsville Primary School 98. The students had to choose from the jumbled up cut outs placed on the floor and then arrange their letter or number in the right order and the right way around for the audience to read out. We had to ‘STOP THE CLOCK’ so to speak, actually the collective countdown a few times but they got there.

Art Hampers Thank you to the many generous Kingsville families who have already donated items for the Art Hampers. These are on display in the main office area and the items will be combined into very valuable themed packages. These will be auctioned at the Art Show. Parent Opinion Survey To the 194 parents who received a DET Parent Opinion Survey last Friday, 27 parents have completed it so far. So a reminder to the remaining 167 parents to please complete this as soon as possible. For many years KPS has gained excellent results and valuable feedback through these surveys. In 2017 there are no more paper copies and it is all being done on line. Gaining a high level of parent responses is a priority so do not put the task off. Many thanks. School Council Vacancy There is currently one casual Parent Vacancy on our school council due to a reent resignation. Casual vacancies must be filled by co-opting persons to the relevant membership category. The person filling this vacancy will serve the unexpired portion of the vacating members time of office which in this case is until March 2019. Any parent who is interested in finding out more about this and what is required please contact Glen Yates, School Council president or Kath Ginnane, Principal. Annual General Meeting of School Council for 2016 The date for this meeting in 2017 was previously listed in the May 19th newsletter as due to take place on August 7th. Please note

Book Week 2017 This year the Children’s Book Council of Australia is celebrating Book Week from Saturday 19th – Friday 25th August (Week 6 for us). The theme for this year is Escape to Everywhere. Congratulations to all of the books that have been shortlisted this year. We will continue to enjoy reading these books during our library sessions and in our classrooms. You can see the full list of short listed books, on the Children’s Books Council of Australia’s website: http://cbca.org.au/short-list-2017 As a school, we will be celebrating Book Week with class activities in line with the 2017 theme – Escape to Everywhere – to share our enthusiasm for reading. We also invite students and students to dress up as a favourite book character on Tuesday 22nd August. *Please note: students do not need to dress up in a full costume but can have a ‘touch’ of their favourite character, for example wearing an eye patch or hat for a pirate character. Kingsville Art Show 2017 Along-side the exhibition of student’s work at the Art Show are a number of other elements that will complement the night. The Friends of KPS are providing light refreshments and a silent auction as a fundraiser for the school. To further highlight the arts programme of KPS, families will have the opportunity to see performances by students who have been involved in lunchtime clubs throughout the year. Spread across the evening visitors will be able to drop into specific classrooms to hear the choir and solo singers perform, listen to poetry written by the children, be entertained by groups of students performing monologues or be charmed by ukulele performances. This is a chance for these dedicated students to showcase their hard work and commitment to theses voluntary activities. Along with these performances a group of students and teachers are providing an opportunity of visitors to engage their own creative side. An official opening of the night will happen in the quiet play area at 5.30pm where the school F-6 choir will performance.

The timetable below is a guide to what you can see as you wander through the arts precinct on the night of the 2017 KPS Art Show. More information for those students involved in each club will be provided by teachers in charge.
