Year 4 Curriculum Newsletter Spring 2019 Rise of the Robots! Through this term we will be looking at and researching all about the Robots and their influence on the world around us. In history the children will learn about the chronology of computers and robotics, which important inventions have changed our lives for the better or worse? Which people have been influential in robot design? The children will develop lots of science, design and technology skills. Our science involves work around electricity, light and sound, investigating how light and sound travel and how they can be changed. Electricity will focus on creating circuits. For Design & Technology the children will be creating a 3D robot in small groups, learning about cams so that they can make the robot head and then applying their circuit knowledge to bring the robot to life! There is no trip out this term but we have a visitor coming in. Junior STEM Primary Robotics will be providing a Lego Computing workshop. Dates to Remember Thursday 31 st January – Robot Day Thursday 14 th February – Parents Evening. Monday 4 th February - Swimming starts Wednesday 13 th March – Come and see my work Homework Project Design a machine! Think about a machine that does something, it could be simple like toasting bread or it could be more complicated such as a microwave. How can you improve it, redesign it…. OR Is there a machine you wish existed like a… toaster that makes chocolate spread toast or an automatic bedroom cleaner? Can you create a labelled design and if feeling brave can you make a prototype? (Deadline 29.03.19)

Rise of the Robots!

Reading:We are working on inference and deduction (trying to find clues inthe text and making our own minds up). The children will be doinglots of work in our reading journals to show they have understoodwhat they have read. Our class novel is The Iron Man by TedHughes.

Spelling:We are still learning spellings linked to spelling patterns, topicvocabulary and these will continue to be tested regularly. Thechildren are learning the National Curriculum words for Yrs 3/4which are used in our Spelling Bee at the end of the year.

Writing: We will be working on grammar and punctuation. Ourwriting themes this term are biographies, science fiction storiessupported by our class novel, narrative poetry and using ourpersuasive language to advertise our robots.

General InformationIf you would like to know more about any aspects of this term'swork, please speak to your child's class teacher.

Detailed planning, subject policy documents and schemes of workare available in school should any parent or carer wish to seethem.

As you would expect, work is differentiated according to ability.

All classes are supported by Teaching Assistants.

In addition, pupils with special educational needs are alsosupported by specialist teachers, the school's educationalpsychologist and other specialist staff as appropriate to theirparticular needs.

Parents/Carers are invited into school during theschool year so they can discuss their child'sprogress with the class teacher. A written reportis provided for every child towards the end ofthe summer term.

very important divisionfacts!
