Prayer
Lord God, you show us the tenderness
of your love in Mary’s newborn Son.
Like Mary, may we always be ready
to say “yes” to your plan,
so that Jesus may be born in us.
We ask you to prepare our hearts to welcome him,
so that like the angels who announced his birth,
we too might greet his coming with joy.
We ask you this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Dear families
The Year 6 Graduation Mass and supper will take place in the Cathedral commencing at 5:30pm this afternoon. This is a special occasion for us to reflect on their primary schooling
and to pray for God’s blessings as they prepare for their Middle school journey. Although we are sad that they leaving, we are filled with a great sense of pride knowing that their time at
St Mary’s has prepared them well for their future and that they have grown not only in wisdom, but in faith and
in love. My sincere thanks to our Year 6 students and their families for their significant and valued contributions to St Mary’s over the years. We are very proud of all that they have achieved and wish them our very best for
the future.
Principal for a Day-Mehar Sandhu
Friday 4th December is our final assembly for the year. A number of awards will be presented on Friday including the Chief Minister’s Literacy Awards and Principal Awards. Congratulations to Mehar from Room 4, who won the
special prize of being Principal for a day at our Major Raffle draw. Mehar will be our Principal on Friday, present-
ing the awards and joining our students for morning tea.
International Day of people with a Disability
On 3rd December each year the world celebrates the achievements of people living with a disa-
bility. Rachel Kroes, Executive Officer of the Down Syndrome Association NT, spoke to stu-
dents at our MJR Assembly on Monday about the challenges that disability brings - in a physi-cal sense, through differences in sensory abilities or in an intellectual capacity. She highlighted the important
part that schools play in supporting families who have children with a disability and their role in promoting posi-tive inclusion, lifelong learning and faith through friendships and our relationship with God. By learning about
and accommodating different learning styles the educational pathway for a child with disability can be fulfilling and successful and it is this pathway that we aspire to create here at St. Mary’s.
Staffing 2016 I am pleased to advise that teaching appointments for 2016 have been finalised. We welcome our new teachers
who bring with them a wealth of experience and talents. They will be replacing Mrs Feldtman, Mrs Coghlan and Mrs Breese who will be on maternity leave and Mrs Boyd, Mrs Gray and Miss Devlin who are leaving Darwin.

Learning and Teaching Corner
Literacy
Motivating your primary school child to aim high
Here are four ways to help motivate your child and improve their learning:
Communicate- Discuss the topics they are learning and what is expected of them. Your
interest will help boost your child’s self-esteem, which will increase their learning
potential.
Bring fun into learning -Talk to your child about the topics they are currently learning,
to see if there are supplementary fun activities you could do with them that will
help with their learning. This could be anything from a trip to a museum to watching
a DVD together about dinosaurs.
Errors are opportunities to learn and practice works wonders -Explain to your child
that making errors and learning from them is one of our most powerful learning
tools. Talk to your child about the importance of practice, which allows the learning
from errors to be applied.
Praise- Most children thrive on authentic encouragement and compliments, so praise them
for their efforts and achievements.
Mathematics-
Keep your child’s brain active over the holidays with these simple, yet ef-
fective math’s games and activities.
Card Games - playing card games such as rummy, snap, etc.. are good games to promote
addition.
Dice - great to generate numbers for addition and multiplication.
Jigsaw Puzzles - are good for developing spatial awareness.
Board Games - like connect4, snakes and ladders, mastermind, ludo, chess, darts etc are
good for thinking skills.

Arty Kids 2016!! After a bit of a break…I will once again be offering after school art lessons in 2016.
I have a few ideas for classes which include working in the style of famous artists, painting canvas-es, working with pastels, mixed media, sculpture, decorating frames/mirrors…ideas are endless and will depend on the children’s interest.
At the moment I am planning on two groups; one run on a Tuesday and one on Wednesday. Classes will run for 6 weeks of the term from 3:15 until 5pm, are suitable for all ages and will be run at school upstairs in room 13. If there is demand an extra afternoon maybe offered.
The cost of the 6 classes is $210 per child and $180 for every additional child in the same family. This will need to be paid at enrolment to secure a place. Classes are limited to 12 children and run by myself and another adult.
All materials are provided but students will need to bring afternoon tea if they like.
If you have any queries or would like to enrol your child in the program, please see me in Room 3 Monday or Tues-days, email me at [email protected], register your interest at www.artyobsessionscom/arty-kids or contact me directly on 0438 845 720.
You will be put on a waiting list if there is a big demand.
Kind regards
Ms Pascale Zufferey

Grade 6 Day Out!
On Monday our Grade 6 students participated in a special day out. It was to celebrate to-
gether their final few days of Grade 6 at St Mary’s. The day began with a retreat, led by Ms
Nancarrow, where students reflected on their time at St Mary’s and how it has shaped the
person they are today. After recess, we walked to the Esplanade and had a shared lunch of
pizza, followed by the cinemas where we watched ‘Hotel Transylvania 2’. It was a lovely
day to spend with each other and Mrs Feldtman and I would like to thank the Grade 6 stu-
dents for being fantastic representatives of St Mary’s throughout the day. You made this
special time thoroughly enjoyable. We would also like to thank Miss Cindy for helping!
