Principal’s News Education Week Last week we celebrated Education Week 2020 across all NSW public schools. Education Week looked very different this year, however, here at PPS we celebrated all the same. The theme of ‘Learning Together’ for Education Week this year was very apt, given the challenges currently facing our world. Our students learn together at PPS each and every day as they engage in high quality, rich teaching and learning activities. For Education Week every class prepared photos and short video clips showcasing students’ work and class activities. These presentations were shared with parents via online links. Our Year 6 student leaders also prepared a PPS Education Week video which was posted on our school’s website. The presentations are wonderful and highlight the excellent work our students demonstrate in class as well as the dedication shown by our teachers. I’d like to thank our students and teachers for sharing their classrooms with parents ‘virtually’ in the absence of on campus opportunities. If you have not yet viewed your class or grade online presentation and are unsure how to do so, please contact your class parent or teacher. K-2 Novelties Event In week 2 due to the wet weather the scheduled K-2 athletics had to be cancelled and a K-2 novelties carnival was held at school in its place. The children participated in rotational novelty events throughout the day. Some of the events included captain / tunnel ball, egg and spoon races, ball games and bean bag races. The children all had a great time and enjoyed the novelty events. Thank you to Mrs Hiley for coordinating and our K-2 teachers for running this event.

Semester 2 Student Representative Council (SRC) Representatives Our Semester 2 (Terms 3 and 4) SRC representatives have been selected and were officially ‘sworn in’ on Monday. Twice a year each class, Years 1-6 elect two SRC representatives to be part of our PPS Student Representative Council. This is an

important role as the SRC representatives, represent their whole class on the SRC. The SRC discusses issues relating to children at the school and provide suggestions or solutions. I’d like to congratulate our Semester Two SRC representatives on their new role. Thank you to Ms Newell, Ms Longfield and Ms Lazic-Kirk for coordinating our SRC this year. Sports In School Australia (SISA) & Dance 2 Be Fit K-2 This term our K-2 students are participating in a paid sport program run by SISA as well as a dance program run by Dance 2 Be Fit. The sport program is very engaging and consists of gymnastics, ball skills, explosive running and fine and gross motor skills development. The dance program teaches students movement exercises (to music) for fitness as well as basic dance moves. The children look forward to these programs each week. Pedestrian and Road Safety The school continues to teach our students about how to get to and from school safely. Parents and carers are encouraged to reinforce these safety messages at home with their children. Walking, riding a bike / scooter or riding in a car to and from school safely is a priority at PPS. Mostly students and parents come to and from school safely and the majority exhibit safe behaviours at all times. Unfortunately, however, we continue to witness unsafe pedestrian and driver behaviour during drop off and pick up times on a daily basis. Running late for school or work or other engagement is no excuse for unsafe behaviour or the breaking of road rules. No one wants to see a serious accident occur in our school community due to unsafe pedestrian and/or driver

behaviour. Please ensure you set the right example for others and our children when dropping off or picking up your children from school.

Bruno Diodati Principal

Deputy Principal’s News Bicycle and Scooter Safety Guidelines and Agreement It has been pleasing to see our students following the PPS safety guidelines when riding to school. Thank you to the parents who have read and completed the safety agreement with their child. Should your child ride to school, please complete the agreement attached to this newsletter and return it to the school office by this Friday. Covid-19 testing Just a reminder that students exhibiting cold and flu symptoms should remain at home and seek medical advice. If your child is being tested for Covid-19, please notify the school by either email or by completing the form on School Stream. The school is required to report all tests to our Health and Safety Directorate including the date and location of the test. A copy of the test results need to be provided to the school before your child can return to school. We thank you for your cooperation with this. The importance of arriving to school on time The PPS school day commences in classrooms at 8.55am. Playground supervision starts at 8.30am and students are encouraged to arrive at school, ready to start the school day on time. Arriving to school on time is important as it:

• Ensures students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day • Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine • Gives students time to greet their friends before class • Reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents. If your child arrives at school after 8.55am, they are required to be be signed in at the office by a parent.

Principals’ Day 2020

As you know, last Friday 7th August was Principals’ Day. On behalf of the school community we want to thank Bruno Diodati for his support and dedication to our school and our children.

Dear Mr Diodati,

Friday 7th August was “Principals’ Day” and on behalf of the school community, I would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge you personally for the incredible contribution you make to our school.

Long before COVID-19 your dedication to students and staff has been noted. Like your teaching staff, your working hours are not 8.55 to 2.55 and I know you are working long after the school bell has rung for the day. There are multiple meetings after hours, often well into the evening and attendance at events on weekends, sometimes at the expense of your own family commitments.

Your caring and compassionate approach to leadership is appreciated. As a parent representative I always feel that our views and concerns are heard and considered, no matter how inconvenient or contrary to school policy they may be. You work tirelessly to ensure that all opinions are heard and valued and given the respect they deserve. In doing so you provide an excellent role-model for our children in compassion and empathy.

In the best of years, the role of Principal is multi-faceted – dealing with all aspects of a school’s life across the administrative, educational, economic, regulatory and emotional spectrums. 2020 has provided us all with challenges we couldn’t have imagined prior. Whilst we are all solving new problems and adjusting to a new normal, the challenges posted in the educational setting have been particularly acute. Your dedication to the health and emotional well-being of both students and staff has shone through as you navigate the twin task of maintaining their education and doing so safely. The Pymble Public School community is fortunate to have had yourself at the helm of our ship during these unprecedented times.

Thank you for the work you do, the care you provide and the positive manner in which you do it; we are very grateful.

Yours sincerely,

P&C Committee 2020
