Attention Juniors! The Class of 2020 Yearbook Portrait appointments are set during the June
2019 Regents Week in the cafeteria. Check your email to find your date at time.
BTHS Student a Congressional Institute Visual Art Awardee!!! Each spring, the Congressional
Institute sponsors a nationwide visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in
the nation and in each congressional district. Students submit entries to their representative's
office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Vidiya Dawah's artwork was the
winning piece for the 8th Congressional District of New York. Her work will be displayed in the Halls
of the Capitol Building for one year. She will also attend the winners' reception in Washington, D.C.
on June 24th, with round-trip airfare provided for her and her guest. Vidiya is a junior Media Major.
Big congratulations, Vidiya! We are so proud of you!

LIBRARY SCHEDULE: The library will be closed Period 10 through the end of the year. We will be open until 3:05 to handle book returns or fines, to check out summer books or to hand out rewards for reading 3 of 6 Reading Challenge categories. Stop by!

The Seymour Naroff Scholarship- Deadline June 7, 2019
This scholarship, offered through the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation, awards $1,000 to a current
senior. Donna Naroff Taurman, Seymour Naroff's daughter, has decided to honor her father's
memory by establishing this annual scholarship for a student in good academic standing. The
application process is open to all seniors. Seniors must read Naroff's story (see attached ) and
write an essay of 250-300 words on how their experiences relate to Seymour and why they
deserves this particular award. The essay must be typed and must include the student's name,
OSIS number and Brooklyn Tech email address. The statement should be submitted to the Alumni
Office by Friday, June 7. The essay may be hand delivered to the Alumni Office in 1W9 or
emailed to Ms. Sciabarra at [email protected]. The award will be presented at Senior Awards
Night on June 17.
Phoenix Rising - Deadline June 7, 2019
The Phoenix Rising Award - will be given to a senior(s) who has/have lost a parent to cancer, or
whose parent is currently in treatment for cancer. The award is sponsored by the Kue Family and
each will be a $500 stipend.
In order to qualify, a student must be in academic good standing for their entire high school
journey. High School Journey is defined as the end of the 8th grade through the 12th grade. In
addition, the senior must write a 250-300 word statement as to how this experience has changed
him/her or impacted his/her high school journey. The statement should be submitted to the Alumni
Office by Friday, June 7. The statement must be typed and must include the student's name and
OSIS number. The award will be presented at Senior Awards Night on June 17th.

BOYS & GIRLS OUTDOOR TRACK - The BTHS Boys followed up their 2019 Indoor Track
Championship last February and their Brooklyn Borough Championship last weekend with THE
PSAL OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP on Sunday (5/26/19) while the Girls put up a fight against the
mighty Paul Robeson Campus juggernaut. PSAL City Champions include Evan Sherman '19
(3200m), Bishopp Boutin '19 (Pentathlon), Dylan Canales '20 (1600m) and the 4x800m A team
(Sherman/Canales/Parker Straight '19 & Astor Meredith-Goujon '19) all of whom will compete at the
New York State Federation Championships in two weeks in Middletown, NY.
Naval Award To Weston Research Student - Harpreet Kaur has received a special award from
the United States Office of Naval Research for her investigations in which she has been developing
a bio-mimetic drone eel, which uses pneumatic actuated muscles for locomotion. The other source
of the submersible drone is solar hydrogen electricity derived from a fuel cell reactor connected to
flexible solar panels, which serve as the waterproofed skin of the drone eel. Ms. Kaur participated
in the 2019 Regeneron STS and won awards and 3rd place in the 2019 NYCSEF.
The Rubik's Cubes Club is holding its final speedcubing competition of the year! Compete to be
the fastest in the school or just to challenge yourself. Competitors must bring their own cubes.
Come by room 3W9 on Thursday, June 13 after 10th period.
Breast Treatment Task Force is coming to Tech! Bring your parents to BTHS on June 20th to
learn about breast self-exam with professional clinicians and plastic demonstration models. Join us

GIRLS GOLF INFORMATION MEETING - The meeting is for girls that are interested in learning
how to play golf or know how to play. The meeting will be held on Wednesday June 5th after 10th

GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL CANDIDATES- Paperwork Deadline Monday June 3rd, 2019
If you are currently in the 10th and 11th grade and are interested in trying out for the Girls Varsity Volleyball Team 2019-2020 Team please read:
1. In order to try-out you must have a valid original medical and original parental consent form. (NO FAX or EMAIL)
2. This form can be printed out from the BTHS website. Click on "Athletics", then click "PSAL Policies", then click "Consent Documents". From there please print the "PSAL Medical form" and "PSAL Parental Consent form".
3. Follow the instructions carefully to make sure it is filled out properly. If it is not filled out properly, you will not be able to try out.
4. Bring these forms to the dean's office (BW6) no later than Monday June 3rd, 2019. 5. Tryouts will be Friday June 7th in GYM 8 after 9th and 10th period.
3rd Year Language Students please be advised that the correct date for your
Spanish/Chinese/French/Italian Regents exam is Monday, June 17th in the morning, not 6/24.
Speaking Tests started on 4/1 and will continue through 6/12. Check your bths.edu e-mail regularly.

What is BlueStamp Engineering?
BlueStamp Engineering is a six-week, hands-on summer program where high school students
build technology projects they're passionate about. Each student selects their own projects and
completes the program with 2 projects (which they keep). They also develop their own personal
online portfolio that details their journey with videos, technical descriptions of their work,
milestones, and blog postings.This personal portfolio can then be shared with colleges and
prospective employers.
What projects do BlueStamp students build?
In past summers, students created omnidirectional robots, infinity mirror tables, CNC drawing
machines, 3D printed robotic hands, vacuum robots, voice controlled robots, automated smart
homes, computer vision ball tracking robots and many more.

2019 Summer Program Info
Dates: 6 Weeks from 6/24-8/2 (weekdays, except 7/4)
Times: Choose morning (8:30a-1:00p) OR afternoon (12:30p - 5:00p) session
Location: Ramaz Upper School, 78th St. and Park Ave., New York, NY
Class size: ~10-14 students per class, with ~1:3 instructor to student ratio
Deliverables: Keep everything you build along with personal videos and website portfolio
hosted by BlueStamp.
Guest Speakers: Students will hear from field engineers and start-up entrepreneurs from
companies such as Apple, Google, Tesla, SpaceX, etc.
Showcase Your Work to Colleges: BlueStamp staff helps students succeed with
recommendation letters, referrals, professional introductions, and advice on how to go further
with their interest in technology even after the program ends.
Tuition: $4,100 for the full 6-week program including parts. Need-based financial aid available.

2019 Rising Scientist Awards College Scholarship Deadline Approaching
The deadline to submit your nomination for the 2019 Rising Scientist Awards is
approaching. High school juniors from Brooklyn Technical High School who show exceptional
promise in research in the fields of mental health, neuroscience or biomedical engineering may
be nominated up to June 28, 2019.
Winners will receive a $2,000 scholarship for college expenses and the opportunity to engage
with renowned scientists.
The 2019 Rising Scientist awardees will be announced in early September. They will be
celebrated at the Child Mind Institute's annual scientific symposium in October.

Middle and high schoolers! Interested in exploring the exciting possibilities when merging art,

Throughout the week (July 29 - Aug 2), students will be exposed to music technology, digital

(July 8th-12th) for someone who can provide general tech support, such as installing and

STARTALK Hindi Language Summer Program at Forest Hills High School
Free Program-For Middle and High School students
Program: July 8, 2019 to August 2, 2019
Through the STARTALK Summer Hindi Language Program, students interested in learning Hindi
will undergo an intensive language program, in addition to attending field trips and cultural
shows. The curriculum is aligned to the NYSED World Language standards. The program will be
held at Forest Hills High School (67-01 110 Street, Forest Hills, NY
11375, www.foresthillshs.org ). Admission is ongoing. Registration and Placement will be from
Monday, July 01 to July 05, at 9 a.m. Classes will be held from Monday, July 8 to Friday, August 2
from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students will have an opportunity to receive high school foreign
language credit as well as earn college credit from NYU.

We're proud to partner with the Breakthrough Junior Challenge video contest again this year.
Students ages 13 through 18 are invited to create a short- under three minutes- video explaining a
challenging concept in physics, mathematics, or the life sciences in an engaging, illuminating, and
creative way.
In addition to awarding a $250,000 college scholarship to the winner, the Breakthrough Junior
Challenge will give the winner's teacher a $50,000 prize and the winner's school a new $100,000
science lab.
