PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Student Achievement
The University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program
I congratulate Marianna Saill-Dilnot (Year 10, Stewart House) on having been selected into the Class of 2018, Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program at The University of Melbourne. Over 1800 applications were submitted to the University from across Victoria and adjoining border regions.
The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program will afford the participants the opportunity to mix with like-minded peers and future leaders. A tailored program of events and activities will support and enhance each participant’s secondary studies, inspire their career plans and provide opportunities to interact with the University community.
Marianna is a worthy candidate for this Program and I am certain that she will engage with it to the best of her ability and in doing so she will be an excellent ambassador for our school and community. Well done Marianna!
I take this opportunity to thank The University of Melbourne for the opportunity it has provided to Marianna.
Victorian Season of Excellence
We have recently received notice that the following students’ work and folios have been shortlisted for Top Designs and are awaiting confirmation of their selection into the annual exhibition as part of the Victorian Season of Excellence: Michaela Prunotto (Year 12, Everard House) – Visual Communication and Design; Carys Norwood (Year 11, Rutter House) – Product Design & Technology: Fibres; Riley Howe (Year 12, Rutter House) – Product Design & Technology: Wood and Visual Communication and Design. Irrespective of whether the work and folios are selected for exhibition, it is already a great honour to be shortlisted from amongst the many folios that the judges have had to assess.
I extend my congratulations to Michaela, Carys and Riley and wish them all the very best with the continuation of the process and of course with their design work into the future.
We are hoping to hear shortly from the TOP Art selection panel and I will most certainly keep you informed of any further developments.

Year 12 Head Start Program
Yesterday we welcomed the Year 12 Class of 2017 into the Head Start Program. It was really great to see the students excited and ready to get started on their Year 12 program. They are now well into it and from first appearances, enjoying the experience.
It was made very clear to students that this is the actual start of their Year 12 program and not a trial. Therefore whilst it is only right that they have a holiday during the Christmas break, they are also required to engage with their learning and undertake a level of home study prior to their return to school in 2017. Students were informed that it would not be unusual for them to have one or more SACs to undertake in their first couple of weeks of school.
I ask parents to support students to be as well prepared for the start of the 2017 school year as is possible. Continuous nagging may not work, but a gentle reminder now and then that they need to engage with their academic program would be useful and much appreciated.
I take this opportunity to thank the Senior School team, our daily organiser and our timetabler for their organisation of such an outstanding program which as far as is possible, placed classes with their actual teacher during this Program. Furthermore, I congratulate staff and thank them for making this Program a priority in their planning and in their day to day work.
Year 12 Valedictory Evening
Just a reminder that the Year 12 Valedictory Evening will take place on Thursday, 17 November at 7:00 pm in the Eltham High School Performance Centre. This is the final formal event during which we will celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2016, VCE and VCAL, and wish them all the very best as they set off into the next stage of their lives and learning. Irrespective of their pathway we hope that during their time at Eltham High School they have developed both a love of learning and the realisation of the importance of lifelong learning.

Last Working Bee for the year
Over 50 people attended the last working bee for the year and a great deal was achieved. We are now feeling more confident that the grounds are better prepared for the coming summer months and for the long break.
Again I take this opportunity to thank everyone that attended: staff, parents, students and friends of EHS. The morning also provided us with the opportunity to more formally farewell and thank John Coates for all that he has done and achieved in the last 25 years of being not just on the Grounds Committee but also leading its work.
If you missed out on the opportunity to contribute to the Working Bees in 2016, you can actually address this by making sure that you commit to one or more of the Working Bees in 2017. Our community needs you. Please keep an eye out for either the flyer or the online survey which will ask you to think about and make a commitment to one or more operational aspects of the school. Your time, effort and hard work will be greatly appreciated by all.

SECOND-HAND TEXTBOOK TRADING Dear Parents and Guardians
The school is conscious of the need to provide an efficient process for families to be able to buy and sell second-hand textbooks and other student resources.
We are delighted to inform you of the school’s new initiative to provide parents with the ability to trade these second-hand items via the Sustainable School Shop.
www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au
The service provides access to second-hand textbooks, calculators, stationery, musical equipment, etc all year. Parents can even trade with other parents from different schools and sell items no longer in use at our school. Many schools use this service.
Families are offered a number of levels of access:
• Search only - registering/logging-in to the Sustainable School Shop, searching all “for sale ads” and gaining the seller’s contact details is free;
• Subscription - an annual subscription costs $21.95. It allows you to raise “Wanted Ads” through the Eltham High booklist as well as sell unwanted books. The system matches the ads of buyers with sellers and notifies the buyer via email;
• Single items to sell cost $1.50 each.
The system is simple and easy to use - If you don’t have a computer, internet access or an email address, please call the Sustainable School Shop for assistance on 0438 743 444.
We are very excited about this new initiative and we hope you will make the most of this opportunity to gain the benefit from recycling your child’s school items.

JUNIOR SCHOOL Staff vs Students Dodgeball Game - Social Responsibility Drive
The Staff vs Students Dodgeball game occurred during lunchtime on 10 November 2016 in the Showcourt. Forty Year 7, 8 and 9 students battled it out against a large number of staff who defended their territory valiantly. The idea of this game came from David Allender, who wanted to create a fun, interactive platform to raise funds for our Social Responsibility Drive.
The school spirit witnessed on the day was phenomenal, with Mr Sicari joining in the game at one point, something that the students greatly enjoyed.

ART 2016 Eltham High Art and Technology Exhibition
The 2016 Art and Technology Exhibition was a great celebration of the art making and designing that takes place over the year at Eltham High School. It was a fantastic opportunity for the general public to view the work of our creative and passionate students. As always they truly impressed.
In only two days teachers, ex-teachers, support staff, students and alumni set up the Exhibition and turned classrooms into an Art and Design Gallery.
The Friday night’s Exhibition opening was well attended by pupils, parents, friends and families and other art lovers from the local community and further afield. Our guest speaker, Morag Fraser, opened the Exhibition with an eloquent and important speech followed by an extended award ceremony.
The Saturday afternoon opening allowed for a private viewing of work and was a more personal affair. Many came along. On Monday all of our students had the chance to see the Exhibition and be inspired by their peers. For some emerging artists, aspirations grew!
COMMUNITY NEWS12
We wish to thank the Edgoose family, The Brock Foundation, Mr Wes Muir and Vicky Ward for their generosity. Their sponsorships allow us to reward our students with special art prizes.
Thanks to everyone who made this a great Exhibition. Most of all thanks to the creative and passionate students of Eltham High School.

BRAINSTEM The BrainSTEM team of Steph Kervin (Year 9 Stewart House), Kinga Jaworska (Year 9 Everard House), Paige Mihaljevic (Year 9 Setwart House) and Stephanie Richards (Year 9 Andrew House), continue to work on their study of Autism using mice at the Florey Institute. The project is beginning to take shape, with the presentation due on 9 December. A preliminary discussion took place on Wednesday to refine the presentation, and test the enclosure in which the mice will perform their social interaction and provide us with an understanding through its examination. The people at the Florey Institute have graciously offered to use their media officer to help in producing a video, and their engineering department to create a full-sized example of the test enclosure using high grade 3D printers! Our team is beginning to develop a story board and plan to commence filming on 30 November, this experience will allow our students to communicate their findings in an engaging media format. They hope to provide an insight into different technologies and improve mice testing across all fields of science.

STUDENT SERVICES NEWS Financial support for text books 2017
Each year, DVCS (Diamond Valley Community Support) runs a Back To School Program aimed at assisting low income families to meet the costs of their children’s education. This Program is available to families with a Healthcare or Pension Card and living in the Banyule City Council area (excluding Eaglemont, Ivanhoe, Heidelberg, Heidelberg Heights, Heidelberg West, Macleod, Rosanna, Bellfield, Viewbank and Yallambie).
The BtS Program will start on Tuesday 8 November to Friday 16 December 2016, and then restart on Wednesday 11 January until Friday 24 February 2017. DVCS will provide eligible families with a cheque for $100 per child (with a maximum of $500 per family). The cheque will only be payable to stores selling textbooks or to a designated school.
Cheques made payable to a designated school are to be credited to the nominated child’s account and used for education purposes I.E. stationary, text books, ipads, laptops, excursions and camps, etc. It is important that the parents or guardians have the ability to nominate how the money is allocated and used for the benefit of their child.

Booklists
Dear Parents and Carers,
You will soon be receiving booklists for your child. Student Services has a small collection of text books which we are able to loan to families for the year if you are a healthcare card holder.
We are also happy to receive donations of books that are currently on the booklist so we can share them with families in need.
Please contact Student Services at [email protected] if you are a Health Care Card holder or on a Pension and need assistance in this area. We are also able to make referrals to the 20th Man in Footscray, however families will need to travel to Footscray to collect the books themselves once the referral has been made.
