PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Market Stall Day
On Wednesday we held our first Market Day Stalls. We had 13 stalls, which
sold items such as: loom bands, stress balls, bracelets and origami birds
among other items our students made to sell. I was so impressed by our
students’ enthusiasm and organisation that I think we’ll run another market
in Term 4!

Growth Mindset and Dinner Table Conversations by Anita Guyett BPsych (Deakin)
Kids with a fixed mindset believe they’re ‘smart’ or ‘dumb’, talented at something: painting, music or
football, or not. They may believe the world is made up of some gifted people, whom the rest admire
from the sidelines. Conversely, kids with a growth mindset appreciate anyone can build themselves into
anything they want to be.
They recognise that people aren’t ‘smart’ or ‘dumb’, that there are no talented geniuses; only hard-
working people who have chosen to take their abilities to the next level. Developing a growth mindset
with our students is very important. I include below an article by Anita Guyett which covers some of her
work on developing a ‘growth mindset’. She has provided some very practical strategies that you can use
with your children immediately.
How often do you sit down to family dinner at home with your children, and ask “How was your day to-
day?” or “What did you learn today?” The answers you get back are likely “good” or “nothing”. At the
end of a long day at school, children generally are not willing to give you a ‘by minute’ account of their
day and what they have learnt. They are tired and often don’t want to share what happened at school.
However, as a parent you are interested in their school life. It is a large section of the day that we simply
miss out on being part of. The way in which we approach the “What did you do today?” conversation can
have marked benefits in not only the information that is shared, but also the mindset in which we instil
into our children. By approaching conversation in a growth mindset manner, we foster good conversa-
tion, learn more about our children and in turn our children have more opportunities for self-reflection
and self-awareness. Both of which are great skills to take forward in their schooling years.
I came across a fantastic resource for the dinner table conversation, called the ‘Family Dinner Conversa-
tion Jar’ (Sacramento Parenting Magazine, 2012). You print off the conversation starters and place them
in an old jar/box or whichever item works for you. Then each night, each person takes a conversation
starter out of the jar. Give it a try, you may be surprised at the laughter, conversation and things that you
learn about each other over family dinner. You can also create your own questions and pop them in the
jar. Sharing with family, is what dinner is all about. Importantly, it can help frame the day in a growth
mindset manner, even for yourself!
Suggestions of other questions:
What is something that you can’t do YET but would like to work towards?
Have you ever stuck up for someone being picked on/bullied? What did you do?
If you could spend a day helping someone in need, who would you choose and why?
What is something you did to help someone today?
What makes someone a good friend? How are you a good friend?
What are some good ways to overcome feeling sad? (This builds resilience and self-coping skills).
Prep Buddies
This week I visited our Preps and their Year 6 buddies. It’s wonderful seeing the support and encourage-ment our older students give to their buddies.

Author Visits In the Library, we love helping children discover a new genre, author or series that
motivates them to open a book and become lost in a different world. To complement our
Library program, we have invited five authors to our school to inspire and entertain our
students!
Lee Fox Prep – Term 3
Lee Fox’s hilarious books ‘Ella
Kazoo will not Brush her Hair’
and ‘Jasper McFlea will not Eat
his Tea’ are completely relatable,
which makes them a lot of fun
for parents and children to read
together.
Sally Rippin Grade 1 – Term 2
Many of our students began
their independent reading
journeys with one of Sally
Rippin’s very popular series
‘Billie B. Brown’ or ‘Hey Jack’.
Her more recent series ‘Polly and
Buster’ is also a new favourite.
Corinne Fenton Grade 2 – Term 4
Anybody who loves celebrating Christmas in Melbourne would love Corinne’s two iconic books ‘Little Dog and the Christmas Wish’ and ‘One Christmas Eve’. You may even remember these two stories from the Myer Christmas windows in 2015 and 2016.
Sussanah McFarlane Grade 3 – Term 3
Our Grade Three children are lucky enough to be
hearing from another wonderful children’s author,
Susannah McFarlane. She wrote the incredibly
popular series ‘EJ12’ and ‘Zac Power’, and (under the
pseudonym Mac Parks) she also co-wrote the series
‘Boy vs Beast’.
Morris Gleitzman Grade 4, 5 & 6 – Term 3
We are extremely lucky to be welcoming Morris Gleitzman to our school. Morris is the current
Australian Children’s Laureate, which is a very high honour. Morris has written dozens of books, his books
have remained popular for decades, I’m sure many parents grew up reading his books, and now our
senior students are enjoying them as well.
It is an absolute privilege to be hosting such amazing authors at Templeton this year. We can’t wait to meet them and hear what they have to say!
