overall assessment data available to teachers and schools. At Kingsville we have excellent assessment processes and schedules in place. These ensure a range of approaches and tools which provide evidence of student learning and growth. Data is gained from a range of key sources and is enhanced by effective teacher observation and the use of common assessment tasks. Multiple sources of evidence therefore verify teacher judgements and assist in planning and instructional planning. NAPLAN results do produce data that is important for whole school planning. This is ultimately in a form of a summative report which indicates the development of learners at a particular point in time. The analysis of school wide data also assists schools in their planning and enables them to monitor overall Literacy and Numeracy progress over time. Please also see additional information in the newsletter of May 5th “The NAPLAN Experience”.

Building Student Engagement and Student Performance Opportunities 2017 All opportunities for student performance are highly valued at KPS. Opportunities will vary from year to year however, the core components will always be provided within the classroom program and, any specialist provision. It is important to note that it is not compulsory for Victorian Government schools to provide a specialist Performing Arts Program or specialist teacher however, at KPS this is seen as a priority consideration. We have for many years ensured that funding for staffing in this area has been allocated. In 2017 Performance opportunities are being provided via:

components of the daily classroom programs

the specialist Performing Arts Program (F- 6)

school concerts (F-6) Term 3

choir opportunities (junior and senior)

weekly assembly items

Year 6 exhibition presentations- as appropriate

an increased range of lunchtime club activities (voluntary undertakings by KPS staff ) some of which provide for possible performance opportunities

Please note a separate musical production involving just 5/6 students is not included for 2017. This information is being provided to all students as part of updated communications regarding 2017 opportunities for performance. In the newsletter of May 5th Peter Ritchie provided details of a range of lunchtime clubs currently being

provided by a number of staff. Some of these activities or clubs, may provide the opportunity for further performance experiences in addition to what takes place within the group or club time. Such experiences may be part of our ongoing performance schedule for the weekly Friday school assembly or, performances at other occasions during the year as part of a school or, community event.

I expect these clubs will develop and adjust as we move through the year and that many students will experience different activities. It is also hoped that some of the club participants will engage in performances at the 2017 Art Show which is planned to take place on August 24th. So, certainly growth and diversity in the opportunities for the student performances in 2017. The club activities will be reviewed in Term 4 and feedback will be gained from student participants. As Principal, I thank specialist teachers and teaching staff for providing voluntary time to ensure a wide range of performance opportunities exist for students. I am proud of the work staff are engaging in to enhance the opportunities for students in this important area.

School uniform alerts It is timely to remind all parents and students that KPS has a required Dress Code which provides for a compulsory school uniform. We need all families to be fully aware of the expectations and ensure children attend school in clothing compliant with the code. Background All School Councils have the authority to develop and implement dress codes for their students, with this authority arising from a Ministerial Order under the Education and Reform Act 2006. Back in 1996, the then KPS School Council went through the process of introducing a dress code for Kingsville students. The code stipulated compulsory school uniform for all students and this remains current school policy. It is vital that all parents are aware of what expectations are set down in the dress code. The dress code is on the school website under the PARENT tab. Uniform Items Whilst there is no set summer or winter uniform to be worn at different times of the year, there are certainly some ‘seasonal’ considerations. Please see further information regarding school uniform and Dress Code in newsletter of April 28th 2017.

Sale The school uniform provider is PSW (www.psw.com.au) and we do not run a school uniform shop on our site. We do however have a very popular second hand uniform pop up shop which provides some bargains at different times during the year.

Traffic – student safety Working to ensure that as a school community we are all aware of the absolute need for ongoing vigilance with regard to traffic issues and student safety is an ongoing challenge for school leadership, teachers, school council and of course for all parents. Working to reduce risk is ongoing and messages, modelling, education programs and work with the Maribyrnong Council, are all components of how we were collectively working throughout the year Current Alert 1. Some parents are dropping children off in

Somerville Road to avoid turning into Bishop Street. Whilst this may work to decrease congestion in the “Bishop Street bottleneck” it can also give rise to additional risk to the students. Parents please ensure you do not mount the pavement, do not turn into driveways, double park or drop children off from the other side of the road. Such practices have been observed and reported recently.

2. “Too Fast Initiative” thank you to Glen Yates, School Council President. Glen has been successful in getting MCC to place radar mounted speed signs at key points in the area

3. New Signage – please see new signs on school

gates stating very clearly DO NOT TURN INTO DRIVEWAY

Sibling enrolments 2018 If any current Kingsville family has a child to enrol for Preps 2018, please email the Assistant Principal, Jeff

McDonald, [email protected] as

soon as possible.

Trading Cards – a great way to explore the attribute of being PRINCIPLED Playing with trading cards is one of many different playground activities that go through popularity phases during the course of the year. Kingsville has a number of groups of students actively playing with cards in the school yard. Playing with cards gives students the opportunity to engage with each other and build social skills. It has also been suggested to me by some staff members that, playing with the cards can provide valuable lessons in trade and the economics of supply and demand. There is no doubt that the swap card craze can cause consternation for parents and teachers. Some children can and do take advantage of others in the hierarchical world of the playground. While the majority of interactions children have with each other at school are positive, there are times when they can be negative and difficult. As a school we would hope that during the interactions between children engaged in card trading they are ‘acting with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities’. It is important that children understand that when they engage in this type of activity they are fully aware of the pros and cons of bringing their cards to school. They need to be cognisant of the fact that some children may take advantage of others. Even so, unpleasant experiences can provide great social lessons such as how to avoid the same situation next time, how to handle the disappointment of being taken advantage of and how to negotiate better outcomes. Children need the freedom to negotiate their own interactions so they can learn from those experiences both good and bad. The street smarts radar that children develop from their free and unrestricted play can be a huge advantage when negotiating tough social situations in school and beyond. Coaching children in the skills and techniques that they need to negotiate the many situations they meet in the schoolyard is important. Engaging with others with trading cards is one of these situations. As parents of children who collect and trade cards it is imperative that you discuss the decision and variables behind bringing the cards to school and assist them to understand ‘that they take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them’. The IB Learner Profile

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognise their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. The learner profile is central to the PYP definition of what it means to be internationally minded, and it directs schools to focus on the learning. The profile of an internationally minded person is a set of ideals that can inspire, motivate and focus the work of the school, teachers and the school community, uniting them in a common purpose. The learner profile is seen as a significant part of the development and education of the whole student. The attributes of the learner profile are: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Courageous, Balanced and Reflective These attributes are known within the school as the Learner profile and are the dispositions we want the students to; feel, value and demonstrate towards people, the environment and their learning. At Kingsville PS (and in fact at any PYP school), a truly internationally minded person is one who is developing and living the attributes of the learner profile in all situations, not just at school. At different times across the year I would like to take the opportunity to highlight a particular attribute of the Learner Profile. Today that is Principled. Principled As students at KPS we act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences. As educators at KPS we believe in the philosophy and mission statement of the school. As a result of this we engage in a teaching and learning approach that is transdisciplinary in nature, driven through a concept driven inquiry process. The teaching environment is a fair and safe environment where we know our children. As a level we ensure that the students are viewed as a whole. As a school we are consistent in the expectations of what it means to be internationally minded. Peter Ritchie Assistant Principal

Taking Action Beyond the School At Kingsville, we often talk about how we support our students to take socially responsible action. One of the most powerful tools we use to teach students about action is the modelling of what action can look like. A great example of this modelling was recently taken by some of our Kingsville community members. A number of Grade 1 families got together on the weekend for a "bring a bag of $0.05 play at the park" - it was freezing! The 5c piece is soon to be out of circulation, so this was a great way of getting rid of those coins and supporting a worthy cause. Together they managed to raise $172.85 for Sam and Connie Johnson's Big Heart Challenge.

Sports Update Cross Country: The District cross country event was held on Friday 5th May in Yarraville Gardens. 60 children from KPS competed against children from three other local schools. It was a great community event with the weather being absolutely perfect for running. All children competed to the best of their ability and should be very proud of themselves. A huge thank you to all the staff and parents who helped with this event, it certainly could not have happened without you all. We are very pleased to announce that at the end of the event, after all results were tallied up, we came EQUAL FIRST! This was a fantastic result for our school. After this event, the District team was chosen, and I am please to say that Kingsville has 15 children going to Keilor Park in a few weeks to compete against other districts. Congratulations to all the children who competed and achieved personal bests. Thank you, Lorey Bentley PE and Sport Coordinator [email protected]
