Dear Parents and Friends of Melrose Primary Term 2 is now completed. We have reached the halfway point of the school year and as such it is timely to reflect on the many achievements we have been a part of this year. Our school community is a very human place – people are important and I thank all in our school community for making our school a great place to be. Our whole school camp (Years 3 to 7 combined with Wilmington PS) and the Reception to Year 2 excursions and sleepover were fun and enjoyed by all. Thank you to Brooke and Julianne for organising these activities. Another milestone for our school is welcoming three new students this week, Deklan (Year 7), Kaleb (Year 6) and Lukyn (Year 5). We trust Deklan, Kaleb and Lukyn are enriched by their time at Melrose Primary, that they learn lots and make life-long friends. Please make yourself known to them, and welcome them into our community. SAPSASA Cross Country On 6 June Riley and Hudson competed in the State Public Schools Cross Country Event held at Oakbank. This was a first time for Hudson and a second time for Riley. Both competed well with Riley improving his ranking from last year. Thank you to both Dads, Chris and Joel for taking their boys to this competition. Cultural Day Last Friday our whole school attended a Flinders Partnership cultural day at Orroroo Area School. Activities included wood carving, cultural painting, lizard door hangings, boomerang throwing demonstration, geology talks and spear exploration, food tasting and storytelling. To complete the day, we all enjoyed a dance performance by Dusty Feet Mob from Port Augusta. We thank Mrs Julianne O’Dea (Principal of Orroroo Area School) and Orroroo staff for organising this day. Dear Parents and Friends of Melrose Primary

Term 2 is now completed. We have reached the halfway point of the school year and as such it is timely to reflect on the many achievements we have been a part of this year. Governing Council News We are currently looking for volunteers for Tuck Day in term 3. Date yet to be confirmed. A huge thankyou to the volunteers who cooked donuts at the Fat Tyre Festival. We are still looking for ideas on the wish list for our school. If you have any ideas on what you would like to see at school, please submit your ideas to the front office and they may just become a reality. We do a lot of fundraising and now we would like your ideas on what you think could benefit our students and school. Bucket hats have been ordered, hopefully they will be ready in time for the start of term 3.

Learning Support at MPS (from Kate T) I have been working at the school since the beginning of this year. I work on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 am to 12noon supporting students’ learning in literacy and numeracy from years 1 to 5. Each day I work with year 4/5 students for 1 hour in Literacy. During Terms 1 and 2 these students have been working on developing their skills in writing persuasive and narrative texts. All these students have made improvements in both persuasive and narrative text writing. I have also been teaching students in Junior Primary with guided reading and writing and teaching strategies to problem solve in numeracy. I wish to share some learning and successes from the past two terms. Below is a narrative written by Elijah. Caty - Fisher Caty- Fisher was a fluffy cat with cute blue eyes and he liked to fish. He fished ever Monday, Wednesday and Friday but he never really caught anything. He only had ever caught one single sardine but he never gave up until one day he decided to go fishing on a Saturday so he got his rod and his bait and went to the jetty. It was a very nice day for fishing. He got his bait and his rod and started to fish. Suddenly he got a bite, it was a really big bite. He didn’t know what was on the end of his line, until he saw a big rough fin pop out of the water.” Holy cow I’ve caught a SHARK!” said Caty-Fisher excitedly.

The shark was 8 times the size of Caty- Fisher, he was scared. It took a whole day to reel in the shark but when he got it up on the jetty he didn’t know how to get it back home because it was so big. So Caty- Fisher stole an old man’s ute and drove it down the jetty to pick up the shark. But when he got home he didn’t know what to do with it again! So he thought and thought about it and suddenly came up with the best idea. He would cut up the shark, sell the meat and get RICH! So that is what he did. He sold a bit and used the money buy a car. Then he sold a gigantic piece of shark and got lots of money. He went to a real estate agent and bought a big modern day house. With the left over money he bought some more fishing gear. Then he ate the rest of the shark himself but not the bones. He kept the bones and put them in the museum for the people to see. The next day his arms were really sore from reeling in the big shark but he didn’t worry about that. all he worried about was more fishing. He fished every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday but not the other days of the week. He only fished for sharks on Saturdays when he needed more money. Kate Taylor

Jack and Olivia consolidating their knowledge of rainbow facts (addition sums that make 10). They first completed addition problems with answers up to 10 and then applied this knowledge in order to complete an addition game. Yr 2 group work working hard at guided reading.

Market Day – 8th August

On 8th of August the school is hosting a school market day organised by the school’s SRC group. There will be stands run by students selling food, plants, drinks, etc.

All the money raised will go to a school project decided by the students. The market will be set up along the front decking stage of the school. The market will be open from 2 till 3pm, please support the school, everyone welcome.

SRC Thank you

We would like to thank the current SRC members for their contribution to Melrose Primary School and being a voice

and making a difference on behalf of all students. They still have one event to host, Melrose Market Day on August

8th, which is sure to be as successful as pet day.

Why you want to become a SRC rep

• What qualities make you suitable for representing your class and the school, taking into account the school

values of: Respect | Honesty | Responsibility| Excellence

• Share a fundraising idea with the panel

R-2 Excursion and Sleepover On Tuesday 2nd July the R-2 students travelled to Bundaleer Forest and Wongabirrie Reserve to view sculptures and art in our area. These experiences were to further the Art program where we have been looking at sculpture and designed and made our own outdoor sculptures.

Bundaleer Forest: These are some of the sculptures along the short sculpture walk.

Years 3 to 7 Camp, Errappa Blue Light Camp, Iron Knob

On the 3rd July we went on our school camp to Errappa Blue Light Camp at Iron Knob. The bus trip was fast and did not feel like one and a half hours. We had great food and got to eat lots of pizza which I love. We got to do two high rope tasks on the second day. We also did a hunt around the town for letters and our team won. We also did laser skirmish. I reckon the camp was awesome and I would like to go again. Lucas

On the last day the activities we were involved in were: The Leap of Faith, Rock Climbing Wall and Flying Fox.

They were all fun but I liked the ‘Leap of Faith’ the most although it only took a short time to complete it. It was worth it. As I climbed up I became more and more nervous. When I reached the top I had to take a few seconds before I jumped. When I did it was kinda in slow motion and as soon as I grabbed a hold of the bar I was fine and I was lowered down.

Even though the ‘Leap of Faith’ was my favourite activity I really liked the other two. The Rock Wall really surprised me because I didn’t think I’d make it to the top, my fingers were really cold and numb as I climbed to the top, but it was worth it, it was also fun abseiling down.

The Flying Fox was pretty much fun but it didn’t last that long but was still good. Connor
