Paris Football Tournament
On Friday 2 June, nine Year 10 Footballers travelled to Ablon, Paris to participate in an international tournament. The tourna-ment was organised in conjunction with the Penkridge and Ablon twinning associations. Ablon and Villeneuve (the next town to Ablon) invited all of the towns they are twinned with to participate in the tournament. So there were 2 English, 2 Ger-man, 1 Russian, 1 Italian, 1 Portuguese and 9 French teams participating in the Tournament. The tournament took place on the Saturday, our lads performed well in the first group stage and were the only non-French side to qualify through to the latter stages of the competition. In the quarter finals we beat CO Les Ulis 1-0 thanks to a goal from Alex Hallchurch. In the semi final we faced the strongest side in the competition, we lost 2-1 thanks to a last minute goal. Our lads were very deflated but they did turn out to be the eventual competition winners and we were the only side who managed to score against them. We won our 3rd place playoff game 3-0 thanks to goals from Cam Jackson and Alex Wingfield. That evening all of the nationalities went to watch the Champi-ons League final. On Sunday morning we travelled to a local market and were then presented to the local community. As part of this presentation one player from each country partici-pated in a keep up challenge. Alex Hallchurch was victorious, beating off stiff competition from the other English player. On the Sunday afternoon we travelled to the local sports stadi-um and all of the nationalities mixed up and played an 11 a side
friendly tournament. This was a unique opportunity for all of the players, with all of our students mixing well with the other nationalities. On our final day we just had chance for a quick trip up the Eiffel Tower before we caught the Eurostar home. It was a fantastic visit and as always our students were a real credit to the school. Barbara Wal-ters (Chair of the Penkridge Twinning Association) made the following comments: “What fantastic ambassadors the teachers and students were for your School throughout the visit, they were an absolute credit. Their attitude, manners and behaviour were impeccable – shaking hands with the other players and officials after the match (apparently a lot of the other teams just walked off which was noted). They were very smartly turned out and put on such a good show for the School, you should be very proud of them. Even my French colleagues commented!”
Educational Visits
In May we had Celebration Day at Wolgarston for Year 13 students, their parents and valued others. Governors, staff, parents and grandparents joined together to celebrate the achievements of our Year 13 students as they prepare to leave the Wolgarston fold for pastures new. Head of Sixth Form, Mr Sim-monds, took the role of MC in an enjoyable ceremony held to pre-sent subject awards and special awards for students. The proceed-ings started with Molly Stanfield playing I Giorno by Ludvico Einaudi on Piano and Dan Beales, Head Boy, brought the proceed-ings to a close with a solo perfor-mance of Classical Gas by Mason Williams on acoustic guitar. Fol-lowing the ceremony, as the party moved to the school lawns, stu-dents were presented with a group photograph as a souvenir and a sumptuous buffet was enjoyed by all. This is the 8th year we have held this very enjoyable Wol-garston afternoon and this is now the traditional close to a student’s life at Wolgarston High School. We wish all our Year 13 students the very best for their futures be-yond Wolgarston and look forward to celebrating with them on Thurs-day 17 August when they collect their final results.

The Sixth Form were addressed in a recent assembly by Tim Fuller from Staffordshire University who gave an introductory talk to univer-sity application and the ways to get the best out of the Higher Edu-cation convention that students attended last Friday. He explained that there would be 120 different universities at the convention and the need to consider what it was that each students wanted from their university experience- posing questions such as which course, what type of assessment and who would be teaching the course? He implored students not to narrow their choice straight away but to go with an open mind and ask the questions that they wanted an-swering whilst also attending a range of seminars on the huge num-ber (50,000) of potential university courses available. For students who were not sure what they wanted to do Tim sug-gested the ‘Spartan test’ (see here) which is a free test for students to start researching higher education and potential careers. We look forward to seeing Tim again and thank him for his thought provoking presentation. Mr Simmonds, Head of Sixth Form
Next Steps As part of the ongoing University and ‘Next Steps’ careers programme run by the Sixth Form, Year 12 students attended the Higher Education Convention held at Staffordshire University this week. The Convention hosted nearly 200 universities, colleges and other institutions, and students were able to ask Admissions Staff and University Advisers their questions directly. In addition to this, students were able to attend seminars on law, media, midwifery, data science, stu-dent finance, psychology and many, many more subjects. Numerous prospectuses were brought back from the event to enable students to make more informed choices about their own next steps. All in all, an enjoyable, informative day! Mr Simmonds, Head of Sixth Form
Best Results Ever for Our Year 10 Biology Challenge Students.
In March, some of our Year 10 students took part in the annual Biology Challenge organised by the Royal Society of Biology. The fantastic performances they all achieved resulted in our highest average score and our most gold awards ever. Well done to all of the students who took part and did so well. Mr Leonard
